The good: Hotel owner very friendly. Beds are very soft (pillowtop mattress) and comfortable. Room looks nicer than a typical motel. Cold air conditioning. They allow you to visit the cottage area about 6 miles out of town. You can feed/pet elk at the cottage area for an amazing experience. The bad: Carpets that don't feel clean. Tiny shower without a light in it and poor water pressure. Sink faucet looks poorly maintained with calcium deposits and wear all over it. Overall: Acceptable value for low cost accomodations in Fredericksburg.

A lot of our family booked rooms for our wedding and we cannot be more pleased. It was great to meet with family as the cottages are nicely placed throughout the 200 acre ranch. We really enjoyed all the elk and we highly recommend this place to anyone looking for nice getaway from the city lights. Great staff and high-end amenities. We are already planning to book again. This place was amazing!

We were hoping to find a place convenient to Fredericksburg, but without the hustle and bustle of Main Street, where we could spend part of our visit on a porch just sitting and thinking about all the good things there are in life and nature. We found exactly that at the Country Inn & Cottages. We stayed in a cottage with two bedrooms, a good sized living room and one bath. The cottage presented itself as very rustic with all wood furniture of the type the pioneers built for themselves when they first arrived in this area in the 1840s. Notwithstanding this sense of a rustic country or farm cottage, there was every modern convenience we wanted, all of which are listed in the amenities section on this website. The experience of sitting on the porch and watching the herd of elks that wander on the property, including right up to and on your porch if you have any cornmeal to share with them, looking up at the stars, visible in a way unknown in the cities, and feeling the evening breeze after the sun goes down, while roasting marshmallows and making s'mores in the fire pit just in front of the porch, is truly a five-star experience. The one serious drawback was the preparation of the room, the so-so maid service and the broken items which maintenance could not repair while we were there. I had requested in two telephone calls and confirmed in an email that we would use the foldout bed and needed the proper bedding left in the room. When we checked in (which takes place at a different location entirely) and inquired as to whether the bedding was in the room, the desk clerk's first reaction was, in effect, "it is not my fault because you did not speak with me." After establishing that the fault was one of the establishment and we did not care who the person was who dropped the ball, we were told that the bedding would be delivered later that afternoon or early evening and, as one would expect from a first-rate establishment, we were given a credit on our bill of $25, their standard charge for guests who want to use the foldout bed. More significantly than the missing bedding, the room, closets and bathroom were very dusty and clearly had not been cleaned for some period of time, and were not cleaned prior to our arrival. In addition to the dust and dirt, when we arrived there was broken glass on the floor. A hinge on the toilet seat was broken and sitting on the seat one slid from side to side. A slat in one of the window shutters was broken, the maintenance man could not fix it and light came through this window as soon as the sun came up, making sleeping for the person on the foldout bed problematic, the remote control for the TV was not synced with the digital box and using the TV was an unwanted exercise in electronics. The ceiling fan in the living room did not function. The maintenance man could not fix either problem. We had coffee on the first morning we were there and the maid service did not bother cleaning the cups, just leaving the used coffee cups in the center of the table. It is obvious from reading other reviews that this was not the usual situation as many of the reviews refer to the cleanliness of the cottages, but it was our experience. In short, this it was a fabulous place to stay on a visit to Fredericksburg that is also like being at a country lodge – a combination of two vacations in one. The matters I described relating to maintenance and the condition of the room when we arrived were a minor annoyance in the grand scheme of things. But they were enough to cause a truly five-star hotel selection in every other respect, to be rated four stars by me.

Response from Jennett K, Guest Relations Manager at Country Inn & Cottages
Responded May 28, 2019
Thank you Sir for your Kind review. As I responded to you earlier, we are so Happy that you were able to experience the true pleasures one finds while staying at the cottages. You were correct in your statement that the Wildlife and Night Sky Views are amazing with a special WOW factor. Again I apologize for the unusual and out of the normal problems you encountered. I did spend several hours reviewing messages and viewing surveillance tapes. The Front Desk personnel that you spoke with when you checked in responded with "I'm sorry, I was not the person you spoke with but will have the Linens delivered as soon as possible." I personally delivered the bedding to your cottage as soon as I was able to get away from office. I apologized again to the nice Lady at your cabin. Unfortunately I was unable to discover any correspondence where you requested the extra linens in advance of your arrival, but thankfully we were able to rectify the issue. Concerning the maintenance issues, the maintenance man tightened the seat cover while he was there and we purchased and installed a new seat the next day. He did inform me that he was able to reattach the slat that had come loose, we did have to order a special part for the ceiling fan and that was unfortunate. The issue with the TV was merely the slide of a button on the controller and as I understood it, was not like the familiar controller that you have at home. It truly would make life simpler if all things were universally the same. Change can be a bit bothersome. As for the maid service, we are one of a very few B & Bs in Fredericksburg that does light cleaning ( linens and trash) on a daily basis, unless requested , then there is an additional fee for daily service. As for the dust and glass under the sofa, this was an isolated incident which was misfortunate. And as I informed you in a previous response, the issues you encountered were indeed rare and unfortunate, all of which have been dealt with and corrected. Again you have our sincere apologies for the issues that you encountered. Thankfully they were not so unsurmountable that they distracted from your enjoyable experience. I hope that upon your next trip you will choose to stay with us again and allow our staff to turn the 4Stars to 5Stars. If you have any questions please contact us at (830)-997-2185 and I will personally be more than happy to assist you. Sincerely: Jennett Guest Services Mgr

This is a wonderful place to get away from the crazies of life. We stayed in one of the suites. Nice comfy bed with good pillows. There was a love seat and fireplace. I loved that there wasn't a TV. The wildlife outside was all the entertainment needed. The Elk came right up to the buildings. It was early spring so not much had greened up yet but this is still a lovely, romantic place to stay. Highly recommend it!
