Once a charming 1960s motel, The Lumen has been transformed into a mid-century retreat in an ideal location directly across from Southern Methodist University (SMU), along a tree-lined border of the Highland Park neighborhood. And when urban exploration calls (and we're sure it will), the hotel is two blocks west of I-75/Central Expressway and a few short miles to the Dallas North Tollway. This boutique hotel boasts a poolside scene for guests only, a four-star restaurant The Front Room Tavern, free WiFi, a work out facility, and enough indoor and outdoor event space to host a graduation party, game-day festivities, cocktail receptions, weddings and much more

    Bring your own coffee pot
Check in was smooth, only valet parking is available at a cost of $30/nite. Stayed there for a family event and although the hotel was nice, my room was equipped with a safe, microwave and mini fridge. I do not recall staying in any hotel that didn’t have a coffee pot. It may sound trivial, however I enjoy being able to get a coffee before having bkft but even the bkft bar was limited with choices. It would seem more appropriate to have a complimentary bkft bar or a ‘grab n go’ if no coffee is provided. It’s convenience to the university is a bonus for out of town visitors, but what would it take to have a list of local eateries, attractions and the like, esp since the restaurant doesn’t serve lunch and bkft is limited? I didn’t have the opportunity to try their restaurant for a meal but did have some late nite drinks with friends in the bar area which was fine. They do have a nice pool area with tables and lounge chairs. Tanya at the front desk was superb and overall staff was friendly. There was major construction in the area which presented a traffic challenge. The valet entrance was easy to miss. I personally would try a different hotel if the need arose next time.

Worn out + bad breakfast + overpriced
It's worn out. The poop never opened during 3 nights stay. The a/c is very noisy. Some rooms have a very tiny window overlooking... a wall. The bathrooms are nice Staff is good Rip off if you ask for simple water they charge you 5 dollars ! Worst is the restaurant. Don't be fooled by the website. First of all ots not open daily. Breakfast..... basically half of the menu is not available daily. We never had OJ ... sourdough never either and so on It's overpriced and basically a 2*

    Great location
Great hotel location but the rooms can vary greatly. My original room smelled like smoke and I immediately called the front desk to ask for another. After sending maintenance to tell me I was smelling their ozone system (it was a smoke smell whatever it was) they moved me to an completely sub-par room. They did explain they were sold out but the room I had should not really even be a room they ever give out. It had a very strange layout with a very small window (maybe 2ft x 2ft) which is not expected for a hotel in this class and price range. So , if I return I think I will ask to somehow review my room before I agree to it. I almost asked to be let out of my reservation but I was there to celebrate my son’s birthday (he’s an SMU student) and this was very convenient for that. Bar and restaurant for breakfast were both good.

The hotel is located opposite SMU in a nice neighbourhood. My room was clean and well maintained, but my window faced a wall. Ask for a room with some view when booking. The breakfast service needs to improved with more selection and reduced waiting time. But overall, a good hotel option.

To keep it simple, housekeeping never came once our entire stay. This meant that we were using dirty towels and sheets our entire stay. I have a serious pet peeve against nice hotels charging for the bottles of water provided in the room. It makes the hotel look cheap, and if your margins are being made or broken on the bottled water then the issues are much bigger than that. Finally, the rooms are gloomy and poorly lit. There was one lamp in the entire room that was meant to light the whole thing up. There is a window, but if you want to change then it needs to be closed and you are right back in the dark again.

Terrible food, terrible food service except for one server, food all shoved into bowls with our plates; wait time for food was extremely long even when there was hardly anybody in the dining room. They need a new chef.

This hotel was clean, modern, and conveniently located. The staff were excellent and helpful. The room itself was clean and spacious. I would definitely recommend if you are going to be near SMU or downtown in general as it is a fairly quick ride into downtown.

This hotel was great! I was in town for a work trip and the location was very easy to get to and from. The area was cute and quiet but not too far from great restaurants. Valet was quick and efficient and the rooms were extremely clean!

The Lumen was great and in a fabulous location just across the street from the SMU campus and stadium. Our room was extremely clean and comfortable (nice linens!) and the staff people were all very responsive and professional yet friendly. Good value for money.

The front desk people are not trained. They didn’t know how to process my credit card. Woke me up at midnight asking me to come down to reprocess my credit card. The next day I complained and I was told the manager will call me. But she never called.

When you book a room here, expect a clean and satisfied room with all the things that you would normally need for a hotel stay. Besides that, 24/7 fitness center, awesome food compared to other local hotels, and great location if you were to drive to other local cities like Garland or Carrollton for Asian food or markets or shopping.

The stay and staff at The Lumen (soon to be The Graduate) are wonderful.. Everything is clean and smells good. It is so convenient....EXCEPT if you want a nice and relaxed dining experience and late night bar. Too bad the owners are unaware of the under-mining affect of having this restaurant as a part of its team. The food is great...but the wait staff is contemptuous and lazy.

This hotel has the fixed position a/c vent pointing directly at the head of the bed. So when the a/c is running, very cold air shoots directly at your head. After about five minutes this becomes uncomfortable. You can either pull the blankets over your head, or move across the room and sit/sleep in a chair. Lastly, the front desk people put me in the smoking area for some sadistic reason. I don't mind a little smoke, but smoke was seeping into the room all night. I thought that I was sleeping next to an ashtray. The hallway outside the room was full of pungent tobacco smoke. Unless you have business with SMU (across the street) I would recommend somewhere else.
