Detailed Reviews
Our stay at Blisswood Bed and Breakfast exceed all expectations! My husband and I celebrated our 15 year wedding anniversary and stayed in the Texas Farmhouse. If you are looking for a retreat away from city live and the everyday hustle and bustle of this place is it! Super quaint and adorable. A beautiful home that was restored as much to its original condition as possible while obviously adding the much-needed accommodations that would not have been found in a house from that era such as running water or electricity. The house was well kept and thoroughly cleaned; they even provided toiletries that I unfortunately had forgotten to pack. Upon our arrival we entered the house to rose petals on the bed, champagne already chilled, chocolate covered strawberries and a lovely cheese platter waiting for use in the fridge. The porch was breath taking to sit on and watch the sunset. The only thing missing was a nice hammock to lay in. During our stay, my husband booked us an early morning horseback riding and then a lovely picnic by the pond. We even were able to sneak in a bit of fishing one evening at one of the ponds on property. The staff was super friendly, and I cannot speak enough kind words about Skeeter. He was always asking if we needed anything and made sure to make us feel welcome while still giving us our space. Super sweet man!!! The owner was super-fast at responding to any request that we had. I would highly recommend this lovely place. We can’t wait to go back and next time make it a family event with our kids!

Thanks, Lovebirds, for choosing the Texas Farmhouse for your anniversary celebration here at BlissWood. We so enjoyed sharing the house and ranch with you and next time we will have that hammock for you! Just need to find the right trees to hang it on. Looking forward to sharing again with you and meeting your kids!

I was burned out and exhausted, pulled in every direction by work, family and everything else in between. After far too much deliberating, I booked myself into Mystic Woods - just me, the dog, a bottle of bubbles, some food and silence!
It really was bliss at Blisswood. From the moment I arrived I felt safe, comfortable and had everything I needed to just nap, read, walk, reflect, meditate and enjoy some much needed "me time". The thing I loved the most was how I was just left alone to get on with it - I literally had the place to myself, yet Carol and the team were also just a text or call away if I did need anything.
The property I stayed in was full of rustic charm, but also very comfortable, the bathroom was well fitted out with a beautiful modern shower as well as a jacuzzi/jet tub bath inside. Outside down my own personal path, I was able to enjoy my own personal hot tub or outdoor shower under the tree canopy.
The kitchen was really adequately equipped with a microwave, a refrigerator/freezer, counter top grill, toaster, coffee machine and two ring stove top. No dishwasher, but I didn't need that for just me.
The grounds are beautiful and I really enjoyed exploring with my trusty canine companion. I know there are lots of activities you can also do and add-ons for breakfast, etc. I didn't do any of those because I was craving isolation and solitude and got exactly what I was looking for.

This was our second stay at BlissWood. The first time we stayed in the Texas Farmhouse, which is lovely and beautifully appointed with huge porches. We needed more space for 5 people this time so we reserved the whole Dog Trot house. This house consists of two large suites, both with fireplaces, living and sleeping areas, two full kitchens and baths. There are many interesting antiques and vintage items to look at, comfortable beds and bedding and the bathroom hole house was immaculate. This unit is perfect for couples or families traveling together. It’s two houses connected with a breezeway.
The yard areas of both the Texas Farmhouse and Dog Trot House are beautifully landscaped and private. The Dog Trot house has a large stocked koi pond in front and a pool in back (It was too cold to swim while we were there). The house is surrounded by pastures with cows, horses and centuries-old trees.
Our daughter really enjoyed going on the morning feeding rounds for all the animals, including mini horses and donkeys, goats and lemurs. The ranch is very secluded and quiet and all of the rental unit’s I’ve seen have privacy to enjoy the natural environment.
If you’re staying in the area for the Round Top antiques events, it’s a pretty 30-35 minute commute from my favorite venues in Warrenton. It’s nice to get away from the traffic and hustle-bustle of the shows and enjoy a glass of wine and sunset in the rocking chairs on your secluded front porch. We will definitely return to this property.

Let me start by saying that this review is of the Texas Farmhouse. I can’t speak for the other accommodations and I don’t want to dissuade people from trying those. However, this is the kind of information that I would have liked to read as I was trying to decide whether or not this was the right spot for us for our weekend getaway. The ranch is beautiful but it feels tired. Our horseback ride was fun but, unlike it is shown on the website, we walked our horses single file for an hour. We enjoyed exploring the ranch by golf cart—especially seeing the exotic animals. The owner was very nice throughout the booking process. Skeeter, who seems to run all the on site operations, was so friendly and helpful—it is clear that he loves the ranch.
The Texas Farmhouse is listed as a “restored” house. It is full of interesting antiques and is surrounded by a beautiful fenced garden and trees. But when you walk in, you will find that the house is not in the condition shown on the website. “Restored” isn’t exactly accurate, as the house looks and smells very old—not in a state of “restoration.” If you are someone who is sensitive to smell, this WiLL bother you. Old is not an excuse for dirty—and it just felt dirty. Paint is peeling off the walls throughout the house—a health hazard? A “restored” home can be filled with old, beautiful things, but also be clean and fresh. When we first walked in it was obvious that the house had not been thoroughly cleaned that day as there were large dead cockroaches in the kitchen and living room. As I was sitting in the living room I noticed a spider the size of a golf ball on one of the chairs. At that point I was about ready to call it quits, but my husband killed the spider and we pressed on. We wanted to be positive! The air conditioning did not work upstairs and the small cooling fan placed in the bedroom was completely ineffective. If you cannot sleep in a hot room, this WILL bother you. Fortunately, we had the house to ourselves and so we could sleep downstairs with 2 fans blowing on us. Actually, sleep didn’t really happen for me. The bedding was nice but the bed was not comfortable, and so between the smell, the thought of the bugs and spiders, the bed, and the fan noise, I was up most of the night, and we opted to go home early so we didn’t lose our whole weekend trying to relax in a place that frankly was not relaxing. It was just too hot to spend the majority of our time outside.
This ranch has glowing reviews online. Perhaps if I had come into the weekend thinking more of camping than staying at a highly recommended bed and breakfast farmhouse it might have been a better experience. We ordered the entire meal package and while the food was adequate, I simply do not think it was worth what we paid. The owner was kind enough to refund the cost of the dinner we missed. Between the accommodations and the food, when I think about how much we spent on our shortened weekend, I have to say am really disappointed. I wish the ranch owners and staff all the best but hope they will find a way to make major improvements.

Thank you for taking your time to let us know about your stay in the Texas Farmhouse. We do supply our Guest Services number in our e-mail confirmations and in the Welcome Text on the day of arrival to all our guests, and we encourage our guests to call us with any issues that may arise. Unfortunately we never did hear from you during your stay and we are always ready and willing to help make our guests' stays as enjoyable as possible and we endeavor to take care of any issues our guests encounter. Our on-call HVAC company was called and came after your stay to check out the AC, and they reported all was good with the system. We will address the other issues mentioned and will make any improvements we can immediately and long term take care of. We had a brand-new custom-made mattress delivered 3 weeks prior to your arrival and will contact the manufacturer to discuss the uncomfortableness that you mentioned. Professional pest control company comes regularly, and they were also called back to come and check and respray if necessary. We very much appreciate guests like who help us make the experience for the next guests enjoyable.

My wife and I stayed for four days in the Grand Safari Tent in October, and it was a wonderful experience. It was very private and tranquil, and the ranch was lovely. I also just want to point out that during this Pandemic, Blisswood is a great place for a vacation because of how private everything is and how much space everyone has. If you wanted to, it would be possible to have no human contact for your entire vacation. From the Grand Safari Tent, we had a great view out into the exotic animal pasture where Bison, various exotic deer, and an ostrich peacefully wander around and graze. We loved the two little white Fallow Deer. They were very comfortable with humans and will approach the fence to let you feed them and pet them. They were very sweet. We did the feeding tour, the safari, canoeing, and archery. The canoe was left by the enchanted lake for us to use at our leisure (life jackets provided). The archery was fun; Skeeter made sure we knew what we were doing and left us to enjoy our time together. The feeding tour was great, and we went straight from there to the safari. It was a delightful experience, and Skeeter was a great host. He was very respectful, humble, genuine, and had a good sense of humor. He made the experience a lot of fun. Honestly, we were worried that we would just drive into the pasture, throw some food out for the animals, see them, and then return. However, we did a lot more than that. We drove slowly through the forest area to find animals that aren't typically visible from the field. We drove to the back of the pasture to find antelope and got to see them leaping. The whole time we were driving around, one of the sweet little white Fallow deer followed us everywhere for more hand feeding. By the way, if you BBQ, the animals will smell the food and come to the fence line to visit. Also, there are some donkeys that roam freely, and they will pay you a visit to help you clean the grill (and your plate if you are not careful :D ). Thank you Carol, Skeeter, and all your staff for creating a wonderful experience for us!

If you’re looking for a great place to get away from covid, and the hustle and bustle of the city and suburbs, to enjoy a trip relaxing Ranch experience, only an hour’s drive from Houston, Texas, Carol Davis’ BlissWood Bed & Breakfast Ranch in Cat Spring, Texas is the place to go. You can choose from over a dozen late 1800 / early 1900 houses with period furniture and some added conveniences and then live the country life during your stay.
We spent 25-27 November 2020 at the Texas Farm House at BlissWood B&B with another couple and had a great time. (We had precooked our turkey as using the 1920 oven in the house is tricky. The house does, however, have a modern refrigerator.
What did we do during our two days at the Texas Farm House ? On Wednesday 25 November, we relaxed and chatted in the chairs on the front and back porch, and we read our kindles. We then cooked a delicious steak dinner on the front yard Char-Broil barbecue (all houses are furnished with an outside propane barbecue). We then watched the blanket of stars that one can enjoy in the sky in the country at night. On Thanksgiving Day we enjoyed our B&B breakfast and went on a fun 8:30 am Animal Feeding Tour and 9:30 am Exotic Animal Safari Tour (both of which we had signed-up for in advance). We then took a long walk of the Lehmann Legacy Ranch pausing at the Show Barn and relaxing at the Gazebo and Lake near the Enchanted Cabin. We fixed Brie and croissant sandwiches for lunch and set up our hammocks and did some more reading on the back porch before warming up our Thanksgiving Dinner. After dinner we played the game “Trekking The National Parks” in our living room and reminisced about the day. The more star gazing! Friday morning, we had another enjoyable breakfast, a nice long walk, and then packed up to return to the suburbs.

We stayed in the brand new RV on Lehmann Lake at Blisswood. It surpassed any expectations we had! It was very spacious and exceptionally clean. We loved sitting under the gazebo looking out at the beautiful lake. Later in the evening, we enjoyed a fire in the fire pit. There was an ample supply of wood and starter for us to use. If you're an animal lover, you must visit this place. There are bison, donkeys, deer, lemurs, and sheep, but the main attraction was the miniature baby donkey that was born just a day or two before we got there. All the animals are so docile and welcomed the apples and carrots we fed them. The staff is also very welcoming and accommodating. We hated to leave, but will definitely visit again, especially since it's only an hour west of Houston!

We were two families with four kids. We rented the Lehman's house. It was very cute and cozy! We all fit very nicely, we had beautiful front and back porches to relax in and watch the kids run around and play! There are so many things for kids to do in this farm! They had a blast feeding the animals and riding on the horses. The exotic safari was very fun for them as well (it is nice for the adults as well). And the barn had plenty of games for them to play.
We stayed during the week. The eldest kid in our two families had remote school during the Covid. While there is no internet at the cabins, the cell reception is very good and we didn't have any issue setting up a hotspot on our cell and connecting remotely to school via Zoom and other applications. So if you need to work at the cabin while the kids enjoy the farm, that is completely doable and a great idea! You can turn your trip into a echolocation or workcation!
The hosts very awfully nice and accommodating. We opted out of the breakfast part and didn't order any foods, but made full use of the kitchen we had at the house and cooked.

My best friend and I needed a nature pandemic safe vacay and this ended up being a wonderful get away! No TV, no wifi, and you feel very removed from city life which is just what we were looking for. We went horseback riding, rented paddleboards, took walks, visited the animals, played games, cooked, rocked on the front porch with our morning coffee, spent evenings in the hot tub, talked and just relaxed. And it was dog friendly so my girl Maple was able to join in the vacation which she loved.
We stayed at the Bluebonnet Bungalow and looked through many reviews before we stayed. I don't think the pictures really do it justice - it was adorable and a great, cozy place to stay. We're both animal lovers so we especially loved the small cow that would walk up to great us each day on our walk and give us kisses as well as the adorable lemurs and donkey who would speak to us. And our horses Jesse and Duque (sp?) were sweethearts on our horseback ride. It was also a really pretty ride around the ranch and we got to get a better view of some of the other rental properties.
Carol's customer service I found to be top notch - she was always very friendly and quick to reply with any questions prior to our stay.
We both would love to return someday and would definitely recommend to any looking for this type of getaway!

My partner and I were looking for a weekend away that gave us an authentic Texas ranch experience. We researched hard to find a place that was not a Disney-like tourist trap, nor a space specifically geared towards hunting. And Blisswood was exactly what we ordered.
We spent two nights in the Bluebonnet Bungalow - a 2 bedroom antique cottage cinematically nestled under majestic oak trees with hanging moss. There's a small living room with a wood stove, a decently stocked kitchen, a bathroom with fantastic water pressure and two adorably decorated bedrooms with very comfy beds. It feels like a step back in time as soon as you're through the doors. We appreciated the board games and books, and the encouragement to switch off from the rest of the world. Given that we stayed during a really nasty cold snap, I was beyond impressed with how cozy the cabin was - the heating and wood stove did not disappoint!
We booked the 'Texas Experience' for one of the days - which included a lovely trail ride in the morning, followed by trap shooting, knife & axe throwing and archery in the afternoon. It was action packed fun, but the people are what made it something really special, though.
The ranch is a sprawling 300 something acres - something you don't really appreciate from photos online. It was great to see a slice of it during our trail ride. It also made the experience feel a lot more special because each cottage is tucked away somewhere private. If we had neighbors, we had no idea about them - the whole experience felt very exclusive.
Something to keep in mind is that there is no restaurant on site, but they can provide breakfast items for you to prepare in your own kitchen. To get groceries or find restaurant/cafe options, you're looking to drive to Bellville which is maybe 15/20m away. Our first night we decided to not explore so much and went to the Cat Springs Country Club which is a 5 minute drive from the property. For anyone looking for a real, authentic Texas country experience with cowboys at the bar watching football, absolutely go. If you want something a bit more polished, Bellville has some great restaurants, and a good grocery store if you prefer to cook at home (which we also did!)
Would absolutely recommend for couples or families looking to switch off from it all and enjoy some time out in nature. It's a very special place.
