Our stay at the palace was impeccable. Staring from
The dinner service on the 31, everything was great from the food to the staff. Chef Francesco Manograsso went above and beyond the call of duty even making us lenticchie (for wealth in the mew year) at the stroke of midnight. The fireworks were beautiful and our waitress, Anna, was a dream. She explained every course throughly & professionally and was never late in replenishing our glass which is always a welcome bonus. We even had the chance to meet the director of the establishment, mr. Morelli, who was incredibly kind, humble and welcoming. The SPA was also stunning. The grounds are impeccably maintained, the staff is kind, knowledgeable and professional and you legit feel your cells regenerating with every hour spent in the place. Highly recommend all around.

Really deserves its 5 stars luxury designation!
Visited during December with the Covid protocols in place.
Pros:
The staff is excellent and friendly.
The room was very clean and modern along with nice amenities.
The Private Spa Fusion is worth the price for a couple to experience
The dinner at the La Marzoline was excellent along with the service.

Unfortunately, the pool areas were closed, but they looked really great as I think there are like 7 pools.

If I had a con, it would only be that some signage could be improved.

Anyway, this place is a hidden jewel as it is only 30 minutes from the Bologna area.

We can't wait to back!

We decided to stay here on our last few days of our visit to Italy. We decided to stay at this resort since it was near the Bologna airport. The resort has very well kept facilities and the rooms are well appointed and very clean. They have several pools that you can relax. We were able to find the Olive pool to be empty where we where the only tow people utilising the pool for the afternoon. The main pool area was quite busy and found this to be perfect. They have this pool and the Rose pool apart where they allow just 28 guests in each. So be sure to check either of these two pools if you just want to relax. They also recognised the COVID rules, where masks were mandatory and social distancing was exercised.

Used to be excellent - now clearly trying to maximise the profit at the expense of guest enjoyment. Our rooms were only half cleaned leaving the previous day’s room service lying around, the “complimentary water” wasn’t replaced and when we asked for it they attempted to charge EUR20 for two new bottles.

One of the main reasons for attending used to be the spa, now we have two small kids we booked the only slot available on Sunday morning only to be told by the lifeguard you can’t actually use the spa with kids and have to go to the youth club pool on the roof.

Maybe still ok for a couples weekend if you don’t mind your room not being cleaned but families should avoid.

Must have been a bad year for selling personal data at CRIF the owners - shame they’ve let the place go

This is a very pretty resort that is outside Bologna, but seems to be geared more toward weekend stays for local Italian families rather than an elevated resort experience. I tried to work with guest services before our arrival to plan activities,
Although they were responsive, it took some time between responses and my request for a pasta cooking class was lost and we ended up not being able to book that activity.

We stayed in the new wing which is very modern but not luxurious and consists of very long unadorned hallways. We started our visit with a premium wine tasting experience. The hotel neglected to tell us that is was high mosquito season. Within the first 5 minutes of sitting down, my daughter who is highly allergic got 10 bites. The vineyard staff was very nice but the hotel should take more precautions and notify guests. We had to stay in our room the second day to recover from the bites, so we really did not get to fully enjoy the resort. Then when we ventured out to the spa the services were average at best. We also dined at the more casual pasta restaurant that night and requested a table where we would be safe from the mosquitos. The staff dismissed our request and said there were no mosquitos, thank goodness I brought our spray, the diners around us were getting bites too and we shared our repellent with them.

Overall, that dismissive passive attitude permeated the resort. We stayed two nights, were only given two boxes of water for our entire stay. When we asked for turndown service, housekeeping just left a pile of towels on our bed. It is a nice resort, just do not expect exceptional service or facilities. If you would like to visit the vineyard I would suggest staying in Bologna and just visiting for the day.

The place is beautiful with amazing views and luxurious pools but the rooms have seen better days. We stayed in Il Borgo in room 214 and we paid over $300 for a night so we expected quality but the furniture was worn with scratches, the carpet had stains and the private garden that we paid extra for had not been taken care of recently. We're not complainers but we noted these issues to the reception and asked to be moved but they only offered us a room that cost $150 more per night which we thought was crazy so we stayed in the room and made it work.

We moved onto the pool area which we found to be wonderful. There are Seven different pools with different water types, sizes and temperatures. We tested them all and thought it was nice to have the option. There weren't any beds along the edge of the pool so we went to another elevated area and found some beds which was fine. The pool bar was simple and easy with their home grown wines and a nice assortment of snacks for aperitivo. We were one of the last to leave at 20:00 and enjoyed ourselves.

We then went to dinner at Il Grifone, their fine dining restaurant, and unfortunately it was not good. I ordered a risotto and the rice was raw. I had to send it back and that took another 20 minutes to then eat. My wife had a pasta dish that was particular and we knew that when she ordered it but it lacked flavor. We live in Italy so we're used to long dinners but this was a three-hour adventure with slow service. It took 15 minutes just to get menus and another 15 minutes to have the wine poured even though they placed the bottle next to our table immediately. Also, there is no view, you're inside a lovely centuries old villa with frescoes ceilings but one of the main attributes of the resort is the view over the valley. At the end, they gave us a discount but it was still expensive for the quality of food.

However, Aurevo saved the day with a high-quality and delicious lunch on our last day. They had light and healthy options along with standard pizza and pasta items that you would expect in the area. The service was quick and efficient. The view at this place is much nicer than Grifone and I'm sure it even better at dinner time.

The spa was also an amazing experience. You can book a free three hour session in the spa when staying at the hotel so it's worth it. It's well laid out with all of the elements that you would hope for in a five star resort.

We will probably be back due to the pool, spa and vibe but with a different room and we will definitely eat at Aurevo again.

This resort has some of the nicest and comprehensive facilities. Huge spa complex , grounds for walking, pool table, ping pong, foose table, tennis. It also has its own private villa Amaigo for secluded privacy. It’s a shame then that service is so random ranging from very good to pretty dire. Staff don’t in general seem very warm or friendly however they do try to be helpful. There is some noise in all rooms from banging of doors starting around 6am... so although rooms are clean well equipped and having plenty of light and views they are not well insulated from sound. On this occasion we had a ground floor twin garden room. I had requested a very very quiet room so perhaps this was overlooked.
I would love to give this property a 5 stars but because of some staff who don’t seem comprehensively trained and give out incorrect information the overall experience feels lacking in that extra touch. I would still recommend staying here because of the facilities. Room service despite covid challenges was also very satisfactory.

My friend recently got married and whilst the grounds are objectively beautiful, the service was certainly not 4*.

My friend’s wedding cards were picked up and ‘lost’ by someone at the hotel. No remorse, no urgency in trying to retrieve them - they’re gone. Wedding favors (bottles of limoncello) were taken and drunk by staff (photographic evidence). Wedding guests were having to go and get wine themselves because the staff were unaccommodating.

On the last night I upgraded to a suite as a honeymoon gift for my partner. That day the hotel had a huge corporate event that they situated in the central swimming pool (right opposite our suite). This meant no access to the pool for the day (surely a discount should be offered for not having access to one of the most integral part of the hotel?!). Heavy bass and excessively loud music was played beyond 12am, despite multiple requests to reception to turn it down/off. Hosting an event of that magnitude and situating it right by the rooms is ridiculous - for an event of this size / one that's situated right by the rooms, the resort should have been privatised. It's not fair if you have other guests. To be frank, I felt like I was on the strip in Ibiza / a party town, not a spa resort in the hills of Bologna.

Dear Clem, We read your review with great sense of concern Our resort boasts a very important history in hosting weddings and this year alone we had the pleasure of seeing over 38 couples who chose Palazzo di Varignana for their most important day. We can assure you that never in the 10 years of the resort's life have we received feedbacks like this. Our staff has always stood out for their professionalism and seriousness and we place the utmost trust in them. Obviously this report is very serious and we would like to investigate further with our Management, therefore we ask you to kindly send an email to eventsprivati@palazzodivarignana.com so that our colleagues can delve into what happened with you through the photographic evidence Awaiting to hear from you we send you our Best regards Palazzo di Varignana

The Palazzo is a lot of smoke and mirrors. It gives the appearance of an upscale resort, yet it cut corners everywhere and was severely lacking in customer service and attention to detail. For being in the Italian countryside of Bologna, I felt like it was a cheap American spa resort that happened to be in Italy. Starting with the room, I booked a deluxe superior which states there is a balcony with a view, and I was put in a sub level basement room which opened up to a very tall fence blocking the light, let alone any type of view. When asked to change they told us it was last minute (I booked months before) and they showed us a room which was dark and dreary, a downgrade, with a view of the back of the hotel with a putting green and dead grass and trees. Horrible. The food was nothing to speak of, breakfast was garbage. The resort is huge with no signage to get around, no golf carts or any way to get around besides walking (forget heels ladies - and we weee there for a wedding so we were all dressed up ). They seem to be saving on electricity because everything was dark all the time. The lights would turn on in the hallways after you’ve walked through so you are in darkness at night in the underground tunnels which is unsafe and scary. Lights turned off in the restroom after 30 seconds also. Overall - I was underwhelmed, the hotel left much to be desired. I would absolutely not return.

Awesome service !! . Let me explain: Victim of a back pain prior to my arrival, I would have loved to stay in bed till my departure at 2 pm the day after. As the hotel was fully occupied and as the Covid protocol needs more room cleaning time, they offered me a bed at the spa location for 2 hours. It was so helpful: I got ice, creme to deal with the pain, next to tea and cookies. So nice and so kind. Even helping me to put my shoes ! Same level of attention than in hospitals. Thank you all.
