Trails West Retreat is located 5 miles from Round Top in a lovely, rolling area with lots of tall trees and gardens on a small creek with bridges across. It has a unique rock ledge waterfall with an observation deck and many walking trails. Trails West Retreat is very family and pet friendly and a great place for family reunions or for smaller wedding receptions. Our Pavilion features a full kitchen and picnic tables with grills and a wonderful outdoor rock fireplace. Our four fully furnished rental cabins each have their own grill, deck and outdoor furniture. Our Country Cottage can sleep up to 12. There is in addition a 29 ft Travel Trailer that can extend the number of guests up to 25. With the cabins and our Eagles's Nest Lodge B&B we can overnight up to 40 persons. We also have campsites for tents in conjunction with a cabin rental. Trails West Retreat is very conveniently located to the Round Top spring and fall Antique Show venues and also to the UT Winedale Shakespeare theatre (only 1 mile) and the wonderful orchestra at Festival Hill (5 miles). Festival Hill is a jewel of its own where not only classical music can be enjoyed but also plays, ballets, and many other events. Our Retreat is actually closer to Round Top than it is to Burton which is only our mail route. Our Pavilion can handle up to 125 guests and there are two playgrounds in addition to all the walking trails through the woods.

From the first phone call when I spoke to Betty, I knew I was going to love this place. My aunt and I had planned a girls retreat. I wanted to take my aunt to Royers Round Top Cafe, and I was looking for some place near there. Betty and Dell were the best of hosts. He made sure we had a fire in the beautiful outdoor fireplace. We had the entire retreat facility to ourselves. We were allowed to use the large pavilion where you can cook and serve many people. I just can't say enough about this place. If you're planning a trip during the antique show days, you better get your reservation in early. I hear everything around there is booked.

Let me start by saying that this is a beautiful place & has great things to offer. The reason the rating is so low is due to the fact that it wasn't clean & hadn't been in a while. The first thing that hit us was a terrible smell. As it turned out, we think it was sewer gas as the toilet started to bubble later. When I mentioned the cleaning issue to the owner, he became very defensive & told me the turn around time during Antique week was too fast and things just got missed. He also said that the girl that cleaned could not be replaced. I just thought the owners would want to know about mold in the shower, house not getting vacuumed, floors not getting mopped, mirrors not cleaned, thick dust, etc. but I guess not since I was shut down as soon as I mentioned the vacuuming. He did take the sewer gas smell somewhat seriously. Otherwise it was a great stay with great neighbors next door.

Response from Flyinggal, Owner at Trails West Retreat

We are very sorry that you felt that the Cottage was not cleaned well. First let me say that we are so popular here being very close to many of the Antique Show venues that we have guests non-stop for up to three weeks now and have reservations many times a year in advance. I see that your group was the last in about 3 or 4 large groups to be in our Cottage. Since the Cottage usually has 6-10 ladies staying there at a time, there are normally 7 beds to change and 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and utility to clean. It was cleaned thoroughly before your arrival. We have 4 other cabins and our Lodge also to clean and get ready with only a 4 hour time between check-out and new guests coming in. It is very hard to get things as perfect as they were before the show began. The problem with the sewer was because of clogged hair and toilet paper in the drain caused by many guests in a short time which apparently happened quite suddenly. We are on a delicate septic system. When brought to our attention, the sewer problem was fixed promptly. This was the first and only time this had happened. We pride ourselves in having a clean, well stocked property and rarely have we ever got a complaint of this nature. Our guests love the fact that they have a large patio with patio furniture to sit and sip their wine after a long day of shopping. There is plenty of room too to put their valuable finds under the roof. Not to mention two side-by-side refrigerators with icemakers. We have one group of ladies who have been coming here for 11 years straight during the antique shows because they love the beautiful country setting, the convenience to Round Top and the comfortable accommodations.

We've stayed at Trails West a couple of times during the summer and enjoyed our visits every time. Cabins are reasonably priced with kitchens, and many have porches/decks so you can enjoy time outside (probably easier during a cooler time of year). Rebecca's can sleep a family of four comfortably if your kids are willing to share a futon. Furnishings are serviceable but worn--it's a cabin, not the Ritz Carleton! The grounds are the real draw here--the area is wooded with a creek running through it, and the owners have cut trails through for a scenic but easy hike. The pavilion and common area has always been free when we've visited, and we've enjoyed stargazing there in the evenings. They accept dogs, and ours has always had as much fun as any of the humans at Trail's End.

Our family and friends have enjoyed Trails West Retreat for six years. We usually book 2-3 nights at least 3 times a year. Fall and Spring are the best so you can enjoy the cooler weather and beautiful wooded scenery. Betty and Del are wonderful hosts and have always been extremely accommadating. Over the years the Meischens have a added a bed and breakfast, pavillion and trailer for their guests. They have lovely trails, cabins and all the comforts of home. All cabins have beds, linens, dishes, coffee makers, t.v.'s, a.c. and heat. No stoves so majoring cooking is done on grills located at each cabin. Round Top is an 1 1/4 from Houston, close enough, but just far enough to feel like you are a world away. We usually book three cabins and let our kids loose. Adults enjoy barbequing and sitting around the giant fireplace. If your lucky Del will bring his antique truck down and show it off or take the kids for a ride in the mule. Betty always has some new tale to tell on the happenings around the area. We enjoy Trails West so much, I'm almost afraid to write this review. I would hate not to be able to get in the next time we go......

If you enjoy antique shopping, this is a great place for you as it is right near the antique capital of Texas. Book in advance though, they fill up quickly during this time of year. It is also a great place to stay if you are an MS150 rider/volunteer as it is close to the route. The cabins here are clean, nicely appointed, and very romantic. We chose it because it is just a short drive from Houston. It is a great place for couples or families. They have multiple cabins and can accommodate large and small families/groups. The Meischens are excellent inkeepers and very hospitable. We have stayed twice now. My favorite was this past February. There is a large outdoor fireplace near the Pavillion which is great on a chilly nights. We just love Round Top and will definitely be back. Also, don't forget to sign their guestbook. We enjoyed reading the messages from previous guests.
