Travelers' Choice
In the early 1980s, Francis Ford Coppola visited Belize, immediately fell in love with the location, and purchased the abandoned Blancaneaux Lodge. For more than a decade the resort was used as a family retreat before Francis opened his tropical paradise to the public in 1993. Tucked away in a pocket of the Maya Mountains, Blancaneaux Lodge is a 20-room luxury resort where waterfalls tumble into turquoise pools above the jungle canopy. Its remote mountain setting makes it a perfect place to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

Blancaneaux Lodge is one of the nicest hotels I have ever been to. Service was impeccable and many activities to do. I will go again. FF Coppola really delivers a great resort. The Turtle Inn on the ocean is fantastic also. Robert Powell

Most friendly service, amazing food and drink, an all around beautiful place to visit. Favorite experiences are the tubing down the river and breakfast in the garden. Too many things to do around the property we will have to come back to experience everything Blancaneaux has to offer. Thank you for the memories!

Our first couples vacation in 20 years was a fantasy come true at this hideaway in the mountains of Belize. A+ for service and friendliness of staff - Our gorgeous spacious cabin was the Honeymoon Cabana Rm #5 - It overlooked the waterfall. Bed was extremely comfy (not too soft not too firm) - Perfect pillows (I like a flatter pillow) - water hot and great pressure in shower. Loved all the decor and soaps etc. - I did yoga with the supplied mat every morning while the sun was rising. It was a breathtaking view and extremely peaceful. Some considerations with our cabin: The waterfall is quite loud from our location so if you don't want to hear it exclusively, you might want a 'quieter' location - Although I suspect you'll have more loud birds etc which I enjoy as well. Understand that these are open air cabins with fans - No Air conditioning. We found it very warm during the daytime but it cooled off in the evening and at night. I suspect at warmer times of year this could be quite uncomfortable. The food was primarily plant-based all from their very own HUGE garden - We loved our tour and the dinner at the Garden Spot with other guests - Both other restaurants served delicious food and don't miss the Dutch Pancake for breakfast (order ahead). Our excursions were fantastic and included private tour guides affiliated with Blancaneaux - ALL were amazing!!! We had the Mountain and Beach package (which splits our vacation 3 nights at Blancaneaux/ 4 nights at Turtle Inn). Keep in mind with this package there is a 3 hour drive from Blancaneaux to Turtle Inn. We had a private car and driver and it was pleasant, albeit long. It is a 2 hour drive from the airport to Blancaneaux. Some additional information: We were actually surprised to see so many families with children at this property. It's not that we don't like children (and most there were extremely well behaved), it's just that we would have preferred to have more couples maybe to socialize with and in our opinion not really that kind of vacation spot. We certainly wouldn't take ours there! There's only one teenie weenie 'criticism' I have - The paving around the beautiful pool is so painful to walk on. I know they were going for a rustic feel but ugh. If you are comparing Blancaneaux to Turtle Inn: Blancaneaux wins for personal service - It is more intimate. More isolated - But more to do on land in terms of hiking, ruins, mountain sports - Food great in both but Turtle Inn is slightly better. Turtle Inn is larger and cabins are much larger as well (I liked our accommodations better at Turtle Inn) - But I loved the isolation and quiet at Blancaneaux better. There really didn't have a personal feel at Turtle Inn like there was at Blancaneaux. I suspect you need to have a cabana with your own butler for that experience. Also - We were unable to use the beaches at Turtle Inn due to the excessive seaweed problem and the beaches are overall unimpressive. I'll have a separate review of Turtle Inn as well. Another consideration at the Hideways is that the only wine available is Coppola Wine. It wasn't an issue for us but just thought you should consider this if you are huge wine drinkers. I'm still dreaming about my stay at Blancaneaux and we hope to visit again someday. Thanks so much to everyone there for making our vacation so memorable.

My wife and I spent four days at Blancaneaux Lodge at the end of April. It was an absolutely enchanting experience for us. The entire property is an oasis within an incredible 300 sq mile pine and palm forest reserve. Cool evenings and very warm days--some sun, some clouds, frequent welcome breezes. The property itself is lovely to walk through. There are many kinds of trees, and many with orchids growing on them. We rented one of the villas with a private plunge pool. The houses are thatched and built with a traditional structure but within are all the luxuries we wanted. Comfortable main room, indoor bathroom (with bath and shower) and an outdoor shower as well. Tastefully decorated. An illuminated conch shell radio to communicate with room service. The staff were incredibly welcoming--kind and helpful. The resort hires many local people. Its garden, tended by seven local farmers, provides most of the food the result serves (talk about farm to table!) The restaurants--open on different days--were a wonderful Italian restaurant (The Godfather would approve,) a Guatemalan restaurant and the Garden restaurant (vegetarian.) We did breakfast and dinner at the Garden hosted by a staff member, Marty, who was wonderfully kind and fun. The river is right nearby and offers a lovely swim. Big Rock Falls is a 45 minutes walk down a trail and wonderful. We also did tours to nearby Mayan ruins and to the ATM cave where you are able to (respectfully and carefully) wade through waist deep water into inner chambers where you can see Mayan pottery and skeletal remains of sacrificed people more than 1,000 years old. Our guide, Alex, provided by Blancaneaux, was incredibly knowledgable and fun to explore with. There were at least a half a dozen other activities we would have loved to have done if we had had time. (English is the national language.) During our short trip we saw a kinkajou, gibnut, coati and a jaguarundi and many kinds of birds. (We were incredibly lucky.) We look forward to returning again soon. It was an amazing place to visit.

Beautiful resort. The entire staff was excellent but special shout out to Marty… best bartender, Waiter and host. Odali was delightful and patient while showing us how to make homemade tortillas. The head gardener was amazing. Took time out if his busy day to give us a tour of the impressive garden. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. We would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience with no crowds.

Blancaneaux makes exploring this beautiful part of the world easy! The excursions are arranged through knowledgeable, friendly guides and drivers, delicious lunches are provided, and we learned a lot about Belize and Mayan history. We stayed in a Gardenview Cabana, and it was comfortable and felt very private. The food at Blancaneaux is quite good - don't miss out on dinner under the stars in the organic garden - by far the best dining experience of our trip. The most remarkable thing about Blancaneaux is its wonderful staff. Every single person we encountered was helpful and pleasant, and seemed to really like working there. And they all take the time to learn your name.

Our family had a great experience. The food was great and there are tons of activities to do. The staff was so attentive. Really have to give them five stars for service. I’ve traveled all over and stayed at the best hotels. They got the service down. I do not recommend this resort to kids under 12 or older adults that are not fit and very active. It is kind of a waste to take small children here as there is literally nothing they can do but go in the pool. The hikes are too hard for them and activities are not for them. This is the perfect spot for teenage children. They will LOVE it! The resort is built on a mountain. Every trip to the lobby requires you to climb 70-100 steep stairs. It’s totally worth it if you can manage the activity and you want adventure. Loved the rooms, no AC but you don’t need it. Somehow it’s perfect all day in the Villa and the nights are cool. It really is truly an experience worth booking.

This is such a special luxury property! The staff is attentive and gracious. Nestled in the forest, it's got charm, seclusion, and many activities from horseback riding to cave exploration and cultural activities. Amazing villas and cabanas are very private and spacious. They have a large organic garden and all the vegetables used in the restaurant come from the garden. We've stayed here twice, and will be returning. Belize is a wonderful option for a family vacation, or for a quiet couples getaway.

We just returned with our three teenage kids. It was one of the best vacations we have ever had. The property is just beautiful, super clean and so well taken care of. The staff is like none I have ever experienced. They are extremely nice and go over and beyond to make your stay relaxing. We took a horse back ride to big rock falls with Phillip. Then tubed down the river with some of the guides. We also did the ATM cave experience which we will never forget. My daughter and I did the garden dinner which was such a lovely way to end our trip. The garden is amazing which provides all of the vegetables and eggs for the restaurants. The food was so fresh and delicious. They also make amazing pizza which my son ate at almost every meal. The villas make you feel like you are in a tree house. We had a two bedroom, which had an open living area with a hammock. My kids just loved the accommodations. They also provided first class transport to and from the airport or excursions. The property is on a hillside so there are a lot of steps required to get around, but that was not a problem for us. Can’t wait to try their sister property Turtle Inn.

Our family stayed at the Blancaneaux for a few days during winter break. Although the weather happened to be extremely rainy the first 2 days (caving cancelled since unsafe), we had a wonderful stay and experience there. The staff could not have been more attentive and responsive..whether it was suggesting and arranging alternate activities for us, enjoying fantastic meals and experiences, helping to pickup and deliver suitcases that did not arrive with us, everyone went above/beyond to help! Particular standouts were our drive and tour guide Alex-he was incredibly knowledgeable, answered our many questions about animals, plants, ruins, the country and so on. We were impressed at what a fountain of knowledge he was and he was a great combo of respectful, friendly, informative and good company to us and our 2 kids (college age and high schooler). He accompanied us to the Belize Zoo and knew something about the animals, history, etc. Later on he took us to tour the ruins at Xunatunich and we learned so much/were again really amazed. Shout out to Alex-you are fantastic! Another experience we really loved was the cooking lesson w Jose who could not have been more gentle, sweet, instructive and lovely. We all got to participate, cook and enjoyed learning how to make the delicious national Belizean dish-stewed chicken, fried plantains, rice/beans and a bread pudding. A wonderful activity to do when it was dumping rain, we had such a nice time and his kitchen was in such a great location-in the midst of the garden/farm that we also got to tour. The accommodations were a bit "rustic" but then again we were in the jungle and that was understood before we checked in that this would be the case. During the unusually cold/wet weather housekeeping even placed hot water "warmers" in our beds each night which were much appreciated! The setting, seeing the incredible toucans/birds on the property, enjoying many delicious meals after a day of adventuring all made this a great place for us. Our villa had a spectacular outdoor/indoor common area and view of the river and waterfall...as mentioned the staff were all just so wonderful and warm. The Lee Family
