Just spent a lovely 4 days at Hill Country Equestrian Lodge and we were all very sad to leave! Dianne, Peter, and dog Snip are wonderful hosts: very welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. They have approx 300 acres in beautiful Hill Country adjacent to a 5500 acre state park. This gives them lots of nice options for trail rides with different scenery and types of rides. The cabins are charming with front porches perfect for sitting outside and watching the animals after a day on the trails.

Dianne runs a great horse program that works for all levels. I went with my boyfriend and his parents and we had skill levels from no experience to very experienced and Dianne made the rides interesting for each of us. She also is a fantastic teacher, so our new riders learned a lot. She spent the time helping them actually learn to ride rather than sit there and hold on like some other outfits will do. Her horses are wonderful and very well trained with great temperaments. We all enjoyed our time with them both on the ground and in the saddle. She also offers lessons and clinics if you want to work on something in particular, lots of options to make the most of your time.

The town of Bandera is charming with some cute shops and good restaurants.
Although in the end we didn't spend that much time there as we preferred to relax on our front porch and didn't want to leave!

If you are looking for a peaceful, fun, relaxing way to spend a few days I highly recommend Hill Country Equestrian Lodge!

My family an I have been coming to Hill Country Equestrian Lodge for four or five years now to take horse riding lessons and relax. Dianne and Peter are great hosts who really care about their horses and how to teach us to ride. The cabins are lovely and you can choose to eat there or go up to the main house and eat at the communal dining room. The food is fantastic.

If you are interested in really learning about horses and riding this is a great place to do it. Trail rides are also available on both the property and in the state park which the property abuts.

We have been to many places to ride horses and have never been to one where the horses were so well trained. Dianne, the owner, had to teach me how to properly ride these horses.......and she did it with grace and charm even though she had to keep reminding me to do things correctly. Once I grasped the proper technique, I had some great rides and felt so comfortable with the riding that we did. Dianne and her team were very attentive and provided the right amount of assistance when needed. Absolutely incredible care and attention her horses get. She also puts that same focus into treating her guests. We had a great cabin with a stocked refrigerator with plenty of breakfast foods. The State Park adjacent to the ranch was beautiful and we had some enjoyable rides through there.
It was very peaceful and the perfect place to getaway. At night you could see a million stars and the Texas sunsets are still the best.
The ranch is about 10 miles from town with some decent restaurants to chose from.
It was a great vacation and we hope to go back again. We highly recommend it. Whether you are an experienced rider or beginner everyone will come away impressed.

This is a terrific place to brush up on your riding skills, or learn. They have both English and Western riding, and do all sorts of clinics--jumping, roping, etc. I had emailed to see if the would cater to a person that was formerly a good rider but hasn't ridden regularly in 25 years, and not only did they, there were 3 others with identical experience, and together we did a 4 day clinic with instruction in the morning and trail rides in the afternoon. We wanted to do our own grooming and tacking, and did. Dianne, the owner, gives quality instruction in riding and horsemanship, and the horses are great. It was the perfect way to brush up on my skills. But, you can also come and stay in a cabin and just do a daily trail ride, even if you have no riding experience.

It was especially nice to see older, retired horses there. There are plenty of places that claim to take good care of their horses or other animals, but you only really know that they are when you see that they still have the animals that are past their working lives.

The cabins are charming and comfortable. They have a kitchenette with a microwave, mini-fridge and 2 burner stove, so you can cook in, since Bandera is 10 miles away. You can watch the sunset from the front porch, probably with the ranch cats and dog for company. This place is quiet, which was wonderful. There is a small pool that was good for a dip after riding.

I'm an experienced rider and went for the jumping clinic with on the flat/jumping lessons in the morning and trail ride in the lovely Texas trails in the afternoon. Unfortunately the other participants were beginners and Dianne was short staffed. Also there was a rain storm one night so we could not use the arena. Dianne was able to give me one private jumping lesson out of the four days. It was wonderful and in the one lesson I learned a lot. However, the other three lessons were not what I had come to Texas for, though I certainly benefitted from them. I went on two trail rides in the Texas Hill country. Sadly I missed out on a third because Dianne gave me a lesson just before the others went out and she said she didn't have another horse I could use to go on the trail ride. The fourth ride into the Texas Hills area was cancelled due to the trails being closed after the rain but we were able to ride in her huge pasture and her trails. All trail rides were mainly walk with a few very short trots, understandable since the others were beginners. Dianne is a WONDERFUL instructor. She is kind, supportive, knowledgeable, has excellent horses and cares deeply about them and her students. Unfortunately this was not the trip for me. Had I known I would end up with just one full jumping lesson and only three of four trail rides I certainly would not have spent $2370 and travelled from Seattle. That said, her place is lovely; accommodations were excellent the Peter's food was super.

The rider was given a lesson instead of the trail ride, because that was what she preferred. She had already had a group lesson, which is what her package included, that morning. The lesson that day was of equal or greater value than the trail ride, in other words, a bonus above and beyond what her package included. I could not help that the footing was not very safe for jumping on the 3rd and 4th day. An advanced rider, (in jumping) might have been able to handle it, but I did not feel it was safe for this rider. When I politely told her this, she showed up at my office an hour or so later, upset, and asked me if I thought she was such a bad rider that she should quit. Of course, I had said nothing of the sort. I also offered her an additional lesson for the morning she was scheduled to leave, since the footing was better for jumping by then. She chose not to take advantage of this.

We had a wonderful time at the October cattle clinic and we got to see an amazing eclipse too! It was such an enjoyable experience: great location, food, hospitality and we made wonderful new friends too! Dianne and the entire team really go the extra mile
to make sure that everyone grows as a rider while maintaining a safe environment and learning how to pen and sort. Her horses are really great too and it’s pretty amazing that she and her team can have 9 horses and riders at varying levels of expertise accomplish so much in a weekend. It’s a positive and supportive environment all
around and her staff are all very accomplished riders, patient instructors and always willing to assist. Thank you for an amazing time!

We recently visited Hill Country Equestrian Lodge for our family to do trail riding and we really enjoyed our visit. The ranch, the land, nature and of course all the horses are phenomenal. A little bit outside of the town of Bandera, there area is very quiet and viewing the stars is great. Even as a non rider, there is plenty of hiking one can do or mountain biking. Dianne and Peter are great hosts. We enjoyed home cooked meals everyday. The authentic looking pioneer cabins offer all the comforts of modern life. Seeing the horses just roam around free in their habit was something we had never experienced but was great. The trail rides were awesome and Dianne has great horsemanship and deeply cares about her guests and horses.

I took my kids to visit the ranch over thanksgiving break. My daughter loves horses and she had the most amazing time at the ranch. The horses roam around the property and she was able to spend lots of time pitching in at the barn. Diane gave her the best one on one lessons, she was patient, skilled, and very encouraging. My daughter really wants to go back for the summer camp.

Everyone else had a great time too. The cabins are very cute, cozy, and clean. There is everything you need and if there is something you’re missing Diane will get it for you. Diane was very accommodating and helpful and made us feel very at home.

We will be going back for sure. I highly recommend this place!

My husband and I visited the Hill Country Equestrian Lodge the week before Christmas and had one of the best trips we've ever had. The cabins are super clean and cozy, and the breakfast spread was great. You can stroll around the acres and acres owned by the ranch or go for a hike in the Hill Country State Natural Area.

The horses can you ride are beautiful and well-loved. We enjoyed rides on the property (with amazing vistas) and rides in the adjacent park. Our guides were professional young women who made every ride interesting and enjoyable. They also helped us find a good fit in the saddle (are were patient with our novice questions about riding).

And last but not least -- the ranch mascot, Snip the Dog, comes to check on you every morning. She is a perfect companion on the trail rides as well.

It a rare pleasure when an experience not only meets all of your expectations, but exceeds them. I was burned out from work and needed a place to disconnect and just ride my horses. I wanted a place remote enough to be able to ride some rugged country, but also comfortable when I get back. I'm not into the "roughing it" style of camping. I chose the Hill Country Equestrian Lodge because it promised both.

The cabins were adorably rustic, but very comfortable and well outfitted. There were both turn out paddocks and large, roomy stalls for my horses. The hosts were absolutely amazing. I had both as much and as little attention as I needed. I came to ride rugged country. I was pointed in the right direction and left to my own devices to ride what, where, and how I wanted to; which is exactly what I was looking for. If you know what/how to look for it, the abundance of wildlife in the remote areas of the park is phenomenal. Deer, foxes, bobcats, armadillos, and birds of every sort are but the short list wildlife I was able to watch and commune with.

That said, I also saw that they took tremendous care to mount, instruct, and guide their more novice riders; if that was what you are looking for. I was there to ride my own horses, but theirs were quite obviously well cared for, trained, and loved.

I met a like-minded sole that rode with me for days and left with a new friend for life. I made new friends sitting around the campfire while cooking on the grill and listening to music. As a bonus, Bandera is only a short drive away with plenty of restaurants, entertainment, and shopping.

The pièce de résistance was the incredible family style Thanksgiving meal served by our hosts. All of the guests came together for a feast and to share experiences over a meal where the food was incredibly well prepared. The turkey was fantastically moist and I could bath in the sweet potato soufflé.

I adored the hosts, the cabin was great, and I barely scratched the surface on things to do and places to ride in the area. I will be back.

Is the horseback riding nose to tail?
Answer from Phil H

In our case, the majority of the riding was instructional around a course in two outdoor arenas and one covered arena. My husband and I (mid-50's) enjoyed our 5 day session very much. The property is quite large with a natural area adjacent to it, so a different trail route was taken each day. It was up to us what we did on the trail ride, whether we went over previous lessons and practiced them out on the trail; or we could be lazy and enjoy the scenery while riding nose to tail. All in all, we learned more than we could have expected and met some very nice people. It was most enjoyable. We plan on doing it again.

Be aware there is only wi-fi in the main house at meal times and no TV in the cottages -- this is a true escape from the rat race type of holiday. There is a small swimming pool and a hot tub and some hiking -- I believe there is golf nearby coz Peter goes. Other than that you really need a car to go explore a little further afield for history etc;
