Great "hotel" in a fantastic location! More of a AirBNB concept than anything. Cool place convent to everything in the Gulch. Definitely go to the Station Inn next door. Parking is tight in the back, fyi.

When I first booked the 404, it had zero reviews on TripAdvisor. When last I checked, it had 4, despite being about a year old. What's more, although it calls itself a "hotel", TA lists it as a B&B/Inn. Initial guests clearly did not hear about the 404 from TA; I discovered it in an article about Nashville in Travel and Leisure magazine. Whatever you call it, the 404 is a darn nice place to stay, especially for those who skew to a younger and/or more independent demographic.

The 404 is located in The Gulch, a reborn and rapidly redeveloping area a bit south of downtown. The HUGE amount of construction going on in the area is a testament to its relatively new-found vitality. Right next door to the 404, construction on a Thompson hotel has begun (noise from said construction resulted in a rate discount for me), and apparently other hip hotel brands Ace and Virgin are also planned in the area. Scads of hip eateries and shops are within walking distance, and the venerable bluegrass music haunt The Station Inn (which looks like a concrete bunker), is right next door.

The 404 Hotel, housed in a converted auto repair garage, has but 5 rooms. The popular and well-regarded 404 Kitchen restaurant in front of the hotel is partially housed in a converted shipping container, as is the housekeeping area at the rear. The hotel has no front desk; when you reserve online, you are asked to choose a 4 digit number that becomes your entry code (at the appropriate time) into the hotel as well as your room (ie, keyless). There are FREE parking spots for guests--4 in the back, one on the street in front--a parking pass is provided. I think there usually is a resident manager on-site during the day, but when I arrived, the hotel was "between managers", so I actually spoke over the phone to one of the owners, Mike, whom I later met on-site. Supposedly staff can be reached by phone 24/7. The housekeeper was the only other staff member I ran into, besides the restaurant workers.

The hotel has one "King Suite" and 4 "King Suites with Lofts". I had the King Suite, which is also the accessible suite, and Mike let me take a peek at a Loft Suite. All rooms have concrete floors and soaring 2-story ceilings with windows high above eye level--they are for natural light, not for views. All rooms have king beds (the lofts have a sofa that can be made into a single) and mid-century style furniture. Lamps I recognized were by Artemide. My bathroom was large (loft baths are even larger), with retro tiling and fixtures (antiqued brass), a large accessible shower, and a fridge with complimentary beverages (including a couple of ales). The towels (by Turkish-T) looked like kitchen towels on one side, but had terrycloth on the other side--overall not too absorbent. My room had no closet, but instead had an open brass railing with hangers suspended over the dresser. Of significant note, there was no telephone, no alarm clock, no safe.

At the front of the hotel space is a common area, also furnished mid-century stye, with a sofa, easy chair, coffee table and desk with an Apple computer. There is a wet bar with all-day fresh fruit, treats (nuts, M&M's), filtered water and ice, coffee and tea, and a mini-fridge stocked with the same beverages as in the rooms, plus orange juice. In the mornings, a selections of pastries from local Provence Bakery is served.

Housekeeping service was fine, except for my last day when only the dirty towels were taken and the trash emptied; no fresh towels were provided and the bed was unmade. The tip I left that last day was not taken.

I tried the 404 Kitchen and it was very nice. Quite cozy--you definitely need a reservation unless you want to chance it at the first come-first served bar area. I also loved Biscuit Love across the street (they started out as a food truck). The store Two Old Hippies across the street, which also has a guitar room and performance area, is worth a look. They've filmed some scenes for the TV show "Nashville" there. Didn't get to The Station Inn because I was too busy eating.

Overall, an exciting, unique place to stay in a hot neighbourhood in a burgeoning city. If you are a high maintenance hotel guest in constant need of attention, this isn't the place for you. But if you're independent and have a general idea of what you want to do in town, give it a try.

If you like the tried and true look and feel of a chain, this hotel is NOT for you. End of discussion. If, however, you enjoy something a little edgy and urban, then you might be happy here. I do and I love this hotel and stay here every time I come to Nashville, which, at the present time, is quite often. If you like lots of windows with a panoramic view, this hotel is NOT for you. If, however, you like nestling into a cozy and unique environment that makes you feel welcome and part of something unique (and you're not claustrophobic), you will love this hotel. As I said above, I love this hotel. The 404 is located in a newly developed area known as The Gulch, in which you can find several very good restaurants, coffee shops, a greenway, and lots of current construction. One word on the construction, I'm a fairly light sleeper and I've never been bothered by noise. In sum, the 404 is not for everyone, probably not for most, but for a select few, it's ideal.

This hotel describes itself as a design hotel and as such I’m judging it. Let me start with what works: My initial reaction was that it's quite chic. I loved the use of a personal code to get into both the hotel and my room. If I were someone famous, renting of the whole hotel would insure no one would be aware of my coming and going. I loved that I could take my luggage to my room in a matter of steps.. no valet to deal with, and no bellman to wait on or tip. It's small, and on one floor so this system works really well. I also enjoyed the artwork in and out of the room, well done and its current. The style of the small public room is Kind-of-like staying in the loft of a hip friend, a good thing. The hotel bar is past a private entrance door but still part of the same building which makes it handy. Now what almost works : The Parking is close and also private, but if you’re driving anything larger than a Honda CRV, hope that you get the only space that fits a larger car (butt out towards the street against the inside wall) otherwise you’re screwed, we lucked out. The room is cool looking at first glance, but upon closer inspection a little mismatched… “god is in the details” : LMVR… While I love the current trend of old brass, if you’re going to use it, don't mix it with the shiny stuff… How hard is it to find matching towel hooks? One min its sexy 1920’s aged brass and the next its high gloss 1986…? I love subway tile, and white walls mixed with varying period furniture… but then add really cheap industrial lighting.. and it starts to feel try-hard. Over all the room was pleasant enough to look at, but annoying where it fails. For this money, the failures shouldn’t be because of cheap choices. Now what doesn’t work : The air-con is worthless, and hard to get the hang of; the on staff help connection isn’t available after 9 pm, Nashville is humid.. add in worthless air-con., and you can do that math. When they are around, you are treated as if any problems you have are your issue and not the hotel’s, help is offered begrudgingly.. And with a millennial shoulder shrug.. Unacceptable at this price point. You can’t get help once the desk goes to an answering service, even though the service promises you’ll be called back, we called twice, we were never called back. Lastly the rooms are sealed from the outside, thus there is never real air circulation, so while they are super clean, they have a musty smell… Ours had, abate light, an undertone of burn hair and basement. So, unfortunately, the-almosts coupled with failures tipped the scale to a bad experience... In conclusion: My advice to the hotel : Make your windows operational, air those rooms out. Educate your staff on customer service; you’ve made this a small enough number that this would be a great add-value. Figure out a better air-con system, your current one is absolutely worthless. Let customers know only big vehicles get the big vehicle spot (again we lucked out it would have sucked had we not). Invest in the little details like matching brass. Potential guests: Nashville is hard to book a room… we tried a month in advance, and no luck… 404 is far from a last ditch effort, and its way better than the comfort Inn, but if you have another choice in this price point (meaning not cheap), and there are a few… one with traditional aircon… Its Nashville, its humid… go for the air… and forgo the drama.

On the website, when you see the pictures, this hotel looks really nice. And it is so: nice decoration, nice soaps and stuff. The hotel manager is also nice. But, and that is a huge but, once in the hotel room, you feel like in a prison, with the only small window being up by the ceilings. So don t hope you will have a view on the outside our bright daylight in the room!!! And if you come within the next months, bring earplugs and be zen: the hotel is in the middle of a big construction site (including constructions on Saturdays). Of course they will not let you know that when you book. Only 2 weeks prior to your arrival....

Funky, modern, chic - Just got back from a girls' weekend. Stayed 3 nights at this sweet little 4 room hotel. Very modern, comfy beds, giant shower, cool loft area. Can't beat the location. The morning coffee and pastries were a nice touch. Real wine glasses available! Attention to detail has gone into this little dream hotel. Great restaurants and funky shops all in this swank little area of Nashville. Worth staying here!

My stay was a bit below my expectations. I had stayed at the Thompson the night before for only a few dollars more. I switched to the 404 because the website made the accommodations look and sound amazing. I know early check in is never guaranteed, but after booking the room, I asked the HT pro if i could try to check in early. She said absolutely but the accommodations were first come first served before 3pm, but if i wanted to drop my bags at the front desk i could do that and go explore. I went straight to the hotel to try to do so and there WAS NO FRONT DESK. The hotel literally does not have a front desk or staff. When they say "virtual check in" they mean you are virtually on your own. So im not sure who i was supposed to "drop my bags with." I had the HT pro re-send me check in instructions. The check in instructions said to GET the check in instructions i needed to email a certain person. For $300+ a night i wouldnt expect that I would have to email someone to get check in instructions. But i did it. I didnt get a response. I reached back out to Hotels Tonight who got in contact with the 404. They responded to my checkin request email and claimed my email first went to spam (even though i sent two separate emails from two different accounts). I then had to call the woman who sent the email to give her my credit card info before she would give me a code to get into the hotel. Once I gave her the card info, she emailed me a code to access the hotel but said she wouldnt activate it until 3pm (this was at noon). So i just had to hang around outside with all of my luggage. I did request early check in and she did end up granting me early access at about 1:45pm. The code worked on the hotel and my room. The room was...... fine. I wouldnt say it was anything particularly spectacular at all. It was much smaller than a standard room but had about 20 foot warehouse style ceilings. The wall unit a/c made an intermittent buzzing sound about every 30 minutes even when it wasnt running. It was loud enough it woke both my boyfriend and i up. I wouldnt have have had any clue how to get in touch with someone if i needed something at the hotel after 9pm. And if i did get ahold of someone, how long would it take them to get there if i needed extra towels? I will say that it was clean and quiet, but for the price, totally not worth it. Just be aware that you are essentially checking into an unattended airbnb for the cost of a 5 star hotel.

Response from Matt B, General Manager at The 404 Hotel
Responded Jul 18, 2017
Dear Lisa, Thank you so much for visiting us and taking your time to let us know about your stay. We are disappointed to hear that we missed the mark on your stay in multiple ways. Though we do offer invisible service, that does not excuse the delay in response that you experienced from your first contact with us. We are glad to hear however that our partners at HotelTonight were able to assist you in connecting you to our team. We can assure you that once we were contacted, getting you to your room was our first priority. Our housekeeping team came together to help get your room clean first after a full house the night before. You are correct that our invisible service is more in line with an Airbnb, but we feel we offer more amenities like a James Beard nominated restaurant, refreshment centers, room service, and other amenities which create a greater value for our guests. Again, we apologize for your frustration and hope that you will consider staying with us again in the future. Warm regards, The 404 Hotel Team

As someone said in a previous review, this hotel is not for everyone but we LOVED it! It felt more like an airbnb as there is no front desk and we never saw a soul while we were there. You enter the "hotel" via a pre-arranged code. With only 5 rooms it feels cozy even though it is quite industrial in appearance. Our room was quiet and we slept well in the super comfortable king bed. The coffee and pastries put out each morning were delicious! The Gulch is a cool and funky neighborhood that we enjoyed exploring and we also were able to walk downtown to dinner and for live music. If you like amenities like a spa and/or gym, this is not your place....but we loved it and will definitely return!

Let me preface this review by saying we stayed on the eve of construction for the Jefferson hotel next door. Make no mistake, it's a complete bummer that this annoying activity completely obscures how unique this property is and how their "invisible service" is a distinct offering on its own.

We stayed in a loft suite loaded with great amenities. There is a common area stocked with a variety of beverages including juices, sodas, and beers. They also change out other goodies during the day. The gulch location affords easy access to downtown attractions. There are enough cool things nearby that warrant an exploration by foot. It's unfortunate that the construction next door dampens the environment in the near term, but once completed, it's an experience that is not easily repeated elsewhere in Nashville.

This is a neat place. The rooms are spacious and the bathroom is huge! I would definitely stay here again. My husband and I decided to take a last minute trip to Nashville (without kids) and this was the only room we could find available. I was really looking forward to relaxing for a few days and sleeping in! There is a new hotel being built next door and construction starts at 6:00am weekdays and weekends. You can almost feel the vibration in the floor. I will definitely stay here again but not until the new hotel next door is constructed.

Hello, Thank you for inquiring about The 404 Hotel Nashville. How many rooms do you require? Thank you.

I think you meant to email the hotel and not me. We booked late and could only get their 'suite'. It had a king bed downstairs. Then it had a spiral staircase to go to the upstairs. My son stayed up there and I never made the trek up but I think he had a king also. The only bathroom was downstairs. But you likely don't need 2 beds like we did. I have no idea what other rooms are like. But be sure and eat in their restaurant. And make sure you make reservations. It's quite a popular place and the food was outstanding.
