The hosts were most gracious and we highly recommend you organise for Catherine to cook you a meal. She is a multi-award winning cook. She and John have an interesting careers background and if you have the interest, they will have the time. After all, one decides to stay at Amphitheater because it is not a metropolis.

It was hard to find anywhere to stay in this area north west of Ballarat. We found this former hotel run by Catherine Spicer. The rooms were small but the beds were comfortable. The bathrooms were across the corridor and were clean with plenty of hot water. Breakfast was fabulous, sitting on the porch overlooking the fishpond. We would certainly...

9 of us stayed here over the weekend and had a great time. The long sprawling hotel has plenty of rooms so you don't feel cramped. The fireplaces give some needed warmth in the winter. Great location for getting out to local wineries.

The Amphitheatre Hotel provides a unique opportunity to step back into history. Isolated and quiet, it is a charming place to stay and makes a lovely change from so many other hotels. Catherine and John are great hosts. We had a wonderful dinner In front of an open fire. Dinner was lovely and serves very generous indeed. The bedrooms and...

It's alway nice to find a hidden gem on a weekend away. The Amphitheatre Hotel just outside of Avoca has heaps of charm and Catherine makes the best roast and pavola I've had in a long time. Very pretty region to explore, great wines and charming place to stay. Looking forward to getting back there soon!!!

After reading the reviews we made a major detour to visit. The sign on the door says they are moving to Melbourne. It looks like you can still rent a room, but the ice creamery is shut as are the meals. It would be good if businesses that used trip advisor and displayed their stickers on the window would let...

The reviewer has given us a 1 rating which is completely unfair in our view. Firstly the Ice Creamery is not the Amphitheatre Hotel Boutique B&B. We have a separate Trip Advisor site for the Ice Creamery. So the review is misplaced. Secondly we have 2 businesses located at the same place. We closed the cafe down about 6 months...

We really enjoyed our stay at the Amphitheatre Hotel B & B. It's a lovely historic building with loads of character. Our room was very comfortable and the classic 1950s bathroom across the hall was spotless with great water pressure in the shower. John and Catherine were friendly and helpful hosts and our stay included a delicious breakfast of muesli...

Cosy, friendly and quiet. A lovely old building full of history, and friendly hosts to chat to. The rooms are not flash but very pleasant. But the star of the Amphitheatre is the food, it is brilliant! And the ice-cream is even better.

If you're looking for a glitzy cookie cutter motel this is not the place for you. If you're looking for a welcoming and homely place that takes you back to an earlier era of accommodation this is the place to stay. No ensuites or bar fridges, but an amazing old pub that has been turned into a B&B and ice-creamery....

My friend and I stayed at the historic Amphitheatre Hotel last year and found it to be a great change from sterile motel/hotel rooms, very atmospheric with charming rooms and very comfortable accomodation. In the shadows of the Pyrenees it is ideally located for walking and exploring the area and its history. Catherine cooked a great dinner, and John proved...
