Detailed Reviews
Having been let down by another property in Shropshire on the morning of our departure to celebrate my 70th birthday, we found Penylan Farm on-line and called to see if there was any chance of a last minute booking. Cathy was so helpful and understanding and immediately said she could prepare Ciderhouse Cottage for us. We arrived just over two hours later to a warm welcome from Cathy, a spotlessly clean and wonderfully warm cottage, even a bunch of fresh flowers in the living room. It was equipped with everything we could want. The duvets, pillows and sheets were some of the most luxurious we have had anywhere, and the tranquil setting made for a very relaxing stay. Our almost 3-year old grandson was ecstatic to find that he could see Dave on his tractor out of his bedroom window, and has been talking about his special tractor ride ever since! The walks from the farm have spectacular views, and we enjoyed trips to Monmouth, Raglan and a special birthday Sunday lunch nearby. Cathy was so helpful and kind, it really helped us recover from our disappointment when we were let down by our previous choice. We would certainly recommend this as a No 1 choice for a relaxing break in beautiful countryside, with lovely areas to explore on the doorstep and far-reaching views from nearby. Thank you Cathy and Dave.

We stayed for two weeks at Beili cottage. Its very well equipped and in a beautiful and peaceful location. The bedrooms were comfortable as was the sitting room and our host Dave was very friendly and helpful if we had any queries or wanted advice and information about the area.

We were going to book a room as B&B but they couldn't offer it for the weekend we wanted, so instead we were offered the Beili Stable, self catering. The accommodation was clean, the lounge and kitchen spacious and well equipped. The double bedroom wasn't spacious but was OK as we had the rest of the cottage to move around in. Our only gripe was that the pillows were lumpy and uncomfortable, and the bed, whilst reasonably comfortable, had seen better days. The location and welcome from Cathy and Dave was great.

We stayed at the b&b for our friends wedding in December. The hosts, Cathy and Dave were incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home immediately. The accommodation itself was brilliant and very well appointed. The views out onto the Monmouthshire countryside were spectacular, I'd definitely stay again and highly recommend it.

Cathy and her husband are perfect hosts. As you would expect from the name Pen y lan is a hill farm in the gentle rolling hills above Monmouth. Great setting, lovely views and great hosts. The farm house offers Bed and Breakfast and the well appointed farm buildings are offered either on Bed and breakfast or Self Catering basis. Like the previous reviewer we stayed in the Mill Cottage. A large bedroom and ensuite on the ground floor and a large lounge/ kitchen/ breakfast area upstairs. Perfect for a couple or those with young child(ren) with car. Lounge has TV DVD player etcThe kitchen is comprehensive and new and immaculate . Patio outside Mill Cottage. Larger lawned area and seating for all guests with views across the hills. We stayed on a B&B basis as we were visiting relatives in the area. Cathy makes an excellent breakfast
A great place to unwind/ chill out/ go on walking holiday/tour/ romance/maybe finish the book or artwork that you always meant to create ( Maybe all of these during a long booking?!). If self catering you might need to stock up in Monmouth as Pen y lan is the perfect country setting. Cardiff and other cities about 1 hour away. They prefer cheque or cash payment rather than cards. It is a friendly working farm with all the comfort you will need.

It was the first time I'd been to Wales and it certainly won't be the last.
Even their cows were lovely!
Everything about our stay was stunning. Cathy and Dave were so kind.
Thank you both.

I recently stayed here during the weekend of the 22nd November 2014 as a friend of mine was getting married in The Bell, Skenfrith. The B&B was very clean and was also finished and maintained to a high standard. The owner was very welcoming and friendly.
I would definitely recommend staying here.

A wonderful location, if a little 'interesting' to find. But well worth it.
So glad I decided to stay a little of the beaten track while on a short business trip. Such a change from sterile business hotels!
Lovely room, clean and tidy. With everything I could need for an overnight stay.
Thoroughly delightful hosts - Cathy & Dave. They know how to make people welcome and enjoy themselves (even if it was < 24 hours stay).
Cathy was so helpful with suggestions for local restaurants etc.
Would thoroughly recommend Penylan as great spot. Will definitely have to go back, but next time while not working. In order to propoerly enjoy the location and peace & quiet.
Thank you.

We stayed in Beili Cottage for three nights whilst husband and son walked some of the Offa's Dyke route. Location was beautiful and the cottage was great in every way. Very well equipped clean and comfortable. The small courtyard was a wonderful sun trap. Dave the owner was very friendly but sorry we didn't get to meet Cathy as she was away.
We would recommend this cottage and would definitely like to return.
