Our Second visit here and just as great as 3 years ago on our honeymoon. The Castle and its grounds are wonderful, the food is fantastic, (Afternoon Tea in the Victorian glasshouse is a must), staff make it feel like home, and it’s a perfect place to stop, relax and make the most of our own beautiful country. We will look forward to our next visit!

The castle and grounds were lovely , unfortunately building work was going on which spoilt it a little bit. It also advertised as a spa hotel but the spa was on a residential camp site 15 mins away . That being said the rooms were lovely, the staff were friendly and helpful . There was a lovely restaurant but in addition there was a fantastic greenhouse offering segregated eating for individual groups . It was totally unique . With your own area and a nice outside garden it gave you your own Covid safe but lovely environment. The food was excellent and beautifully served with an extensive wine list. The only difficulty was the walk back to the hotel on unlit paths but it certainly added a bit of fun! Overall a very pleasant experience especially as we had some nice weather to sit in the garden for drinks.

The attention to detail went as far as the hotel calling in advance to check our dining preferences. Absolutely faultless from being met on arrival to pampered for our whole stay. Food excellent, service wonderful all packaged in lovely accommodation. Not cheap but very fair value for money.

We stayed for 4 nights in a grand garden view room on the lower ground floor of the hotel - Knockdolian. We had a four-poster bed and lots of room, but it was very dark and the lighting was not good. The bathroom was spacious but the small shower cubicle was not, and the faulty overhead shower was not appreciated by this lady! Due to the nature of the building the floors creak so we were disturbed by the guests moving around in the room above us - The Earl of Orkney. We chose to have the 3-course dinner in the dining room each evening, with us having the same table throughout our stay for breakfast and dinner. The food was excellent, as were most of the staff. I was surprised that a car washing service was not offered when a quest asked specifically where he could get his car washed. Due to the location of the hotel and the weather, this service should have been provided onsite.

We first visited Glenapp 7 years ago for my father's 70th. Our stay was so nice that we said to ourselves that we must return. The tasting menu we had during that stay was the best we have had and the castle and grounds were wonderful. When we returned we discovered the hotel was under new ownership. However, this has just meant that even more money has been invested in the property and the standards of the communal areas are rooms was very high indeed. Moreover, the new owners have converted the glasshouse within the walled garden into a lunch/dinner venue and they have done an incredible job. It is such a beautiful location to have drinks, lunch or dinner in. The walled garden even pre-dates the castle itself. The staff were incredibly friendly and efficient. We were met on arrival and welcomed into the hotel and shown our room but the main check-in could be done by app. We asked whether we could do a whisky tasting at last minute and the staff member was very happy to oblige. When we arrived back from our coffee in the glasshouse, our whisky tasting was waiting for us in the drawing room and we had a 1 hour private tasting. This is compared to our experience at Inverlochy Caste where we inquired about a whisky tasting and were merely told by a staff member "I'm not sure if we're doing them at the moment" and never heard back. The 5 course tasting menu was well priced and the food was impressive. Maybe not quite as good as our memory from 7 years ago but it still was very good value for a tasting menu. There were many good, well prices wine options, unlike Inverlochy where the mark up was around 4 times - so one had to pay £50+ for a very average bottle! Service again was very attentive. When we go back we will likely dine at the glasshouse where one can order a la carte. This is a great option for a longer stay where a tasting menu per day would get too much. In summary, it was another excellent stay at Glenapp and we will return - the sooner the better. Its clear the new owners are investing heavily in the property and it shows. They are also trying new things such as now providing trips to the inner Hebrides on board the hotel boat which sounds great. We wish them every success!

Response from John Orr, General Manager at Glenapp Castle
Responded Sep 8, 2020
Dear KDBB, Thank you for your wonderful review, and for sharing your happy family memories of the castle. The castle ownership changed in 2015 and the new owners have continued the great work began by the original hotel owners. The Victorian Glass House was refurbished last winter, and has become a great place for casual dining. While the Endeavour on the 3rd floor will open this Autumn. It will offer a 4 bedroom master apartment with private lounges, dedicated staff, and facilities to rival a large country house. We are delighted you enjoyed the food and the service and your kind comments have been distributed to the team. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.
