Eco Bothies These small (8'10" x 6'6" or 2.69M x 1.98M) wooden structures, designed and built on the farm, resembling the traditional upturned boat shelter, offer lined and insulated accommodation for those who prefer not to travel ladened with tent, bedding and cooking equipment. They look out to sea through fully glazed double doors and provide an indoor/outdoor living option with their outdoor deck, very helpful for our changeable weather. Bicycles and vehicles can be parked discreetly beside and an outdoor storage box is provided. Inside, a simple platform provides double or single bed options or raised seating. Each Bothy is provided with bedding, water container, rechargeable lamp and hot water bottles etc. Campsite The Campsite at Wheems is in an elevated field with stone dykes, looking south and east towards the sea; beaches and cliffs can be reached on foot in 5 minutes and by car in 2 minutes. There is a yurt providing additional common space and the camping fields have now been sculpted into level terraces and planted with shrubs. Electric plug ins available. There are hot showers, toilets and utilities including washing machine and drying line. We also now have an equipped covered kitchen area for all guests. Small Cottage Small renovated traditional cottage, overlooking bays and cliffs 5 minutes walk away. 2 Miles from village, ferry and bus. Solar and ground source heating. Situated on small organic vegetable farm with in season produce available. Attached to farmhouse with french door onto own stone terrace. We had the most wonderful time at Wheems, we stayed 4 nights in one of the pods which was lovely, clean and cosy with stunning views to wake up to. The facilities were quirky with a fantastic upcycle feel which works so well with the setting, and they were clean and tidy with plenty of soap and loo roll and never felt busy so it was easy to maintain social distancing. The weather was incredibly kind to us so we could sit outside the pod with a fire at night and watch some amazing sunsets and then see the Milky Way. If you like your campsites to be rustic and peaceful with a bit of character you will love Wheems, I cannot recommend staying here enough. We will definitely be back!

We have just come back from five nights at Wheems and loved it. It was easy to get to from the ferry and it is marvelous to wake up with a view of the sea. The site has a great feel, hand made and upcycled, and a sense of generous hospitality, with herbs and tea in the communal cooking area and organic vegetables available to buy fresh from the farm's polytunnels. Really clean and lots of sanitising wash so social distancing was fine. Thanks Wheems for great stay!

We camped 7 nights at Wheems and were really impressed with the set up. The weather was not particularly kind to us so we really appreciated the communal camp kitchen and covered seating area where we could cook in shelter and socialise with our friends and other campers. Lots of the structure is upcycled which gives it a really cute charm. The bathroom facilities were great too, never had to queue and the showers were hot every time. Plenty of hand sanitiser, hand wash, washing up liquid, toilet rolls etc. There is an honesty box policy for farm produce, we tried the broad beans which were delicious. The beach is approx a 10 minute walk and is stunning and there are incredibly beautiful walks along the coastline in both directions. St Margarets Hope is just a 5 min drive and has 2 general stores for essentials and the Murray Arms does great food and were very welcoming to us and the dogs. They do fab pizza takeaway too! I want to give a special mention to Sophie who works on the campsite who was AMAZING! She was constantly cleaning and always on hand to answer questions and when a storm blew in she went above and beyond to ensure we were all comfortable.. thank you Sophie! Great campsite, highly recommend!

It’s a lovely little place. Very quirky but just a beautiful spot and so many nice touches. Each pitch for camping is an individual level pitch surrounded by wildflowers (comfrey etc) and bees. I loved this being a Medical herbalist I got overly excited by the herbs everywhere. I really like individual pitches as my son has ASD and prefers the little bit of privacy this gives you. The views from the pitches and the whole campsite are really stunning. No cars are left by the tents either which I really prefer. The facilities are interesting but really nicely thought out. There is a communal camp kitchen with an honestly shop full of good useful organic stuff and very reasonably priced. Pasta, pasta sauce, tins of beans, some organic veg, tea, oat milk etc. Really handy thank you. The kitchen has plenty of pots / pans and cutlery. With a microwave couple of kettles etc. The free tea, salt etc was also lovely. There is a washing machine and eco friendly washing liquid is provided with an honesty box at £1 each wash. There is a washing line and an undercover washing line too. Plenty of sinks for washing up/ washing. The undercover outside washing up area was really useful with washing up bowl/ liquid and tea towel provided. There are two self contained bathrooms with a toilet/ sink and shower. 2 showers only and 3 toilets. These had plenty of hot water, a bath mat and were cleaned regularly. They are quirky though. The showers don’t have tiles but painted wood and painted concrete floors. I can see why some people would not like this but I thought they were fine. Hot water and hangers on the backs of doors, somewhere to put your wash bag, plenty of loo roll - everything has been thought of. I think we were there when the last reviewer was and we didn’t see anyone not having a good time there. Looked like plenty of people were very happy. I would warn you though - it is windy. But it’s orkney so it will be ;) Lovely spot and we will be back :)

Dear Jules, Thank you so much for your lovely and thoughtful review. I am touched that you have taken the time to write this as it will be so helpful for future guests and we are very grateful for your nice comments. I have passed this onto my brother Dan who is up at Wheems as this will be nice for him to read. We are working on the facilities all the time and they will be getting a lot of love and time spent on them over the quiet season. Thank you for coming to Wheems. Islay
