My husband and I visited as part of a cruise ship shore excursion. You take a ferry from Kirkwall and walk to the castle. The gardens are lovely as is the castle itself...but the scenery is the showstopper. We were treated to tea and scones, a magnificent guided tour and were encouraged to take our time to view the area.... More

Very nice "modern" castle only built in the mid 1800's. The tour was excellent, and informative, I especially enjoyed the grounds, saw my first flat apple tree, (you have to see it to understand). We were treated to the history of the area and had Tea and scones, one of the better castle tours.

We visted the castle as part of a cruise ship shore excursion. We did not stay overnight or eat dinner. Our itinerary: Kirkwall via ferry to the village of Balfour (on Shapinsay Island), then a ferry to the castle on the other side of Shapinsay Island. The Balfour castle is remote and beautiful. I loved every minute. I had a... More

This is an amazing place to visit! A 20 minute ferry ride to get there. Castle is stunning, fully furnished, down to fixtures and the hardware. Grounds are georgous, make sure you walk around. The thing that sets this place apart, is you are allowed to sit on the furniture. Tea was included in the cost of the tour. Felt... More

Are you a millionaire? I'm not but we were here by invitation so I've no idea what it cost I'd guess well over £100 per head. If any meal can be worth that, then this one was. Attentive staff, incredible surroundings and wonderful food (all ten courses of it). Start saving up now and teyv to book for nest October!

We held our wedding at the castle and both Jean-Baptise and Elodie were superb. The castle has retained all the original character but has a contemporary edge. All bedrooms are special and have beautiful furniture and furnishing - best rooms have to be Canopy and Balfour. The team who support Jean-Baptise and Elodie are fabulous, professional and extremely discreet -... More

We had the pleasure of celebrating a special birthday in very special surroundings. A boat trip, even in the mist, is an exciting start to an evening out. The staff at the castle were as delightful as the surroundings. We were shown round some of the fabulous bedrooms and all wished we could afford to return and luxuriate in the... More

Its hard to put into words how magical this place is, from the boat trip, to meeting our charming host, Elodie, through to the best meal ever and having a Castle to ourselves. Oh and the Spa hidden away in the beautiful grounds. Absolute perfection in every way. Thank You.

Great example of what money can do. The castle, garden and estate shows what money and imagination can do. The magnificent gardens are still being restored to their former glory. The hand planted forest is truly an unique walk. The greenhouse was used for floral displays and fresh fruit and vegetables in the Balfour era. The castle itself is magnificent... More

On the spur of the moment my husband and I decided to see if we get reservations to eat at the restaurant at Balfour Castle on Shapinsay Island, Orkney. We were able to get them, took a taxi boat, made private arrangements to get back to the Mainland and we treated to the best meal we have ever had. We... More
