Accommodated in a suite overlooking Loch Harray. Beautifully appointed with wonderful views. Staff were excellent - very friendly and efficient. This is a quiet hotel but with great atmosphere as it is well supported by the locals and is a great centre for visiting every part of Orkney

Recently stayed at this hotel having come by it by chance. It appears to be a family run hotel which has all the charm that one would expect of such a venture. My wife and I were made to feel extremely welcome during our four day stay. Cleanliness was five star and food quality both in the restaurant and bar...

Just spent four nights in a loch view room. The view was second to none. The bed was very comfortable. Excellent food and a good selection of local beers and spirits along with a very friendly atmosphere made for a very relaxing week. A good central location for touring round Orkney.

We have stayed here many times and always feel at home. The rooms are very comfortable, the food is of the very highest quality, all of the staff are friendly and efficient, the Wifi is reliable. The Merkister has the relaxed competence that you would expect from a family-run hotel. It is a very popular dining venue among Orkney residents...

Spent four enjoyable nights here with a walking group. Good quiet location although the hotel was quite full. Very comfortable, well equipped and beautifully clean rooms. Friendly and helpful staff, with good bar and very good food for both breakfast and dinner but no choice for packed lunches

We've popped in for a pint or two and love to sit outside and relax with the lovely view. This time we stayed inside for lunch and it was really good. We were lucky that we arrived early as it soon filled up with locals and other tourists. This place is beautifully kept with great, professional staff who really seem...

We spent a week in Orkney with our friends and eat here in the evening. They allowed us to take our well behaved dogs into the bar to eat. Staff are exceptional as is the food. Beautiful setting overlooking the loch. It does get very busy so if you're going in the holiday season be sure to book. Even when...

The Merkister is beautifully located close to a loch, not far from the village of Dounby, and the views from many rooms and from the public areas are excellent. It's a good base for touring Orkney, the mainland of which is relatively compact. Reception and check-in were friendly and helpful, and the room was well-furnished, with a particularly comfortable bed....

We come every time we visit and it is improving year on year. Food was excellent with stunning views over the Harray loch. Service was good and efficient. Only thing is at this time of year the sun coming in though Windows and reflecting off the loch can make dining difficult. I don't know how to avoid this as blinds...

working on the island, for 3 nights ,I was booked into the Merkister, Although I arrived after they closed, they left details of how to find my room etc, Nice simple décor, the all important breakfast was excellent, and your table moves closer to the window dependent on how long you are staying ( actually a great idea, because as...
