We stayed in suite 2 which overlooked Loch Harray and beyond. It was , quite simply, wonderful. Of course the hotel is still following coronavirus precautions, however as well as being reassured that they were taking all precautions in keeping residents and staff safe , it didn’t detract from our break at all. The food was superb . We had lunch when we arrived, and breakfast and dinner and were never disappointed at all. The ingredients were local, fresh and delicious. Because of COVID restrictions the hotel is not providing a breakfast buffet and asks that breakfast is ordered the night before. This was fine and worked well. All staff were were friendly and couldn’t do enough to make our break very special. Hopefully we’ll be able to return again.

The hotel is in a beautiful quiet location beside Loch of Harray. The grounds go right down to the loch. The room was great with French windows leading out onto our private outdoor seating area. What makes the hotel is the staff. They are quietly efficient and willing to go the extra mile to help you. One night because of reduced capacity, we could not get a booking so they brought our meal to our room. My husband has special dietary requirements and this was offered at all meals. Thanks for a great break

What a gem, stayed a week here in a suite room overlooking the loch & fields with our 2 dogs. The staff were lovely & friendly, nothing was too much trouble and one wouldn’t have known they had only been open again for a day. Highly recommend the suite rooms for a long stay, very comfortable & relaxing.....home from home. The food was excellent. An easy place to stay with dogs. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend a stay.

Friendly and welcoming staff made our 4 nights stay at the Merkister a wonderful memory of our visit to Orkney. A beautiful, peaceful location with great views across Harray Loch. Good location for access to the neolithic sites and stunning coastal scenery of Birsay, Yesnaby etc. Lovely restaurant for great breakfasts and dinners. All very Covid secure in an effective but discreet way.
