We stayed at The Sands for 5 nights while we explored Orkney. It's very convenient for the St Margaret Hope/Gills Bay ferry and easy enough to whizz over to Mainland (pausing at the Italian Chapel and Orkney Wine on Lambsholm). The hotel itself is fine, a converted building looking out at the south eastern corner of Scapa Flow, with all... More

Orkney isn't very well endowed with hotels but this is a good one. Nothing special in hotel terms - pretty ordinary in fact - but it provides everything you need at a good price together with very good food and friendly service. I'll return there.

We went to the Sands for Sunday lunch, thinking it looked good and had a great location. But we were sadly disappointed by the offering. It started badly - they had mixed up our reservation - but managed to find us a table. Service was fine, but nothing more. The starter was reasonable enough - a half-decent soup which was,... More

Part of our tour included a cream tea at the hotel. Lovely and much needed after a windy drive around scapa flow - scones fresh and rhubarb jam delightful with tea and coffee flowing freely by friendly cheerful staff. Thank you

On a motorhome tour of Orkney we were looking for a motorhome friendly restaurant where we could have a meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were told we were welcome to stay in their car park overnight. The setting of the hotel is lovely with views to the sea from the dining room. The meal was all very good,... More

Stayed for 3 nights in a very nice, clean comfortable room with en-suite. However the shower was tiny, there was very little room to turn round, and with the doors to the cubicle shut it felt claustrophobic . Meals were very good but only one salad on the whole menu, this was a starter, but when asked the chef did... More

One of the best places to eat in Orkney. The young staff are excellent, the selection is first class and the quality is second I to none. I had steak but if you like seafood I'm sure you will love it. Well worth the trip from Kirkwall . Four in our party all rave reviews . Was busy on a... More

We booked a table at Sands following a recommendation and were not disappointed. We both ate from the bar menu as the main menu is a little pricey (although other guests were raving about the quality!) Staff were friendly and main course and dessert delicious. We would highly recommend!

Stayed one night during a cycling trip. The staff were really helpful in getting the bikes stored an then ready for an early start the next day. The restaurant was very busy with lots of locals ( always a good sign) and our food both in the evening and at breakfast was excellent quality and really good value. Would happily... More

First visit to Orkney and the Sands was a perfect place to stay. Room excellent, food (breakfast and dinner) both of the same very high standard. Good range of choices on menu with several dishes marked as gluten-free. Very helpful and attentive staff and perfect location for St Margarets Hope ferry. Will definitely be back.
