The Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City is a delightful blend of Southern charm and modern comfort. From the elegant decor to the attentive staff, this hotel offers a serene and upscale experience. The rooms are spacious, well-appointed, and exude a classic ambiance. The on-site restaurant, Wellington’s, serves delicious cuisine, and the overall attention to detail creates a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, its convenient location near East Tennessee State University and local attractions makes it an excellent choice for both leisure and business travelers.

First, the name is misleading. Not actually the original historic Carnegie Hotel. It burned in a fire.
Second, while a very nicely decorated and comfortable lobby, there is nothing special about the rooms. All rooms on front of building have a view of ETSU and a peekaboo view of Buffalo Mountain, but there is a lot of road noise so bring a noise machine. The rooms are large and comfortable at 400sqft, but the furniture is quite beaten up. Rooms on the top floor on the front have larger windows which are really nice. There is a mini refrigerator, but no microwave which was unfortunate because we did not want to use the in-room coffee maker because one can never tell if it is cleaned between guests (who could use their used cup to refill with water). Very convenient to everything in and around Johnson City. Free parking. Free local daily newspaper at the front desk. Restaurants within walking distance. We can not see what justifies the higher price versus other hotels in the area.

For a unique hotel experience, I canceled a chain hotel I had planned on staying at to stay at a non-chain hotel. This one was within three dollars of my previously booked stay, so I figured why not.

The hotel is directly across ETSU, so I imagine they have alot of guests who stay over for the proximity of the college. That plus the connected walkway over to the stadium for games.

The staff we encountered at the front desk were very friendly, a bonus for this particular hotel. The lobby for this hotel is very nice, and one that you would expect to pay quite a bit more for a stay.

Our room was on the end of the hallway, next to the stairs. There is music that pipes through the hallway, and they do allow dogs, because we passed one room where a dog heard our presence and started barking.

The room was quite large, with a sofa that bumped up next to two large windows that let the light in. The bathroom was an equally large space, offering a bathtub, separate shower, and two sinks. One of the larger bathrooms I've ever experienced for hotel.

The bed was comfortable, however the ac unit was a bit particular. It would either be very cool and then when it would shut off, it would become warm. So the evening was alot of tossing and turning, with throwing off and on of covers. Also, with our room that faced ETSU on a Friday night, there were quite a few loud vehicles (remember college town here) that apparently had no mufflers as they loudly drove down the road. At some point I was able to get to sleep and slept well, however the same wasn't for my spouse.

The next morning we had breakfast at the onsite restaurant. The food was very good with nice sized portions for the price. A very nice restaurant and in hindsight, wish we had the opportunity the night before to check out the bar.

All in all, it was a nice hotel with friendly staff. However, there was one thing that kept me from giving them five stars, and that was my credit card charge that I have pending on my statement. Now when I booked the room, it was with my AAA discount for about $3 more than my previous cancelled room elsewhere. However, my credit card bill shows the amount instead for $15 more than the quoted price. The morning we checked out, I declined a paper receipt thinking that I would get an email receipt instead (like the chain hotels do). But I was incorrect. In turn, I have no idea why my rate went up the additional amount, unless I was not giving the AAA discount. Would I stay there again, based on this price difference? Probably not, which is a shame.

That said, always check your receipt and make sure you get a copy of the stay. No statement will be emailed to you.

The only thing separating the hotel and the train tracks is a small parking garage. The building is literally feet from the tracks. At 1:20am and 4:40am every morning, trains would rumble by. As the hotel is near the downtown area, the trains would blast their horns. The soundproofing is not adequate to sleep through that noise. Additionally, the soundproofing between rooms is not what you would expect from this hotel either. They charge premium prices for suites with claw footed tubs. That won't help you sleep any better! Additionally, they do not offer coffee or water in the lobby area for paying guests. Even your basic truck stop motels have the amenities.

We stayed in this old syle, almost palatial but modern and comfortable hotel for 2 nights with our service dog. The hotel was well appointed and spotless and our spacious room had all the necessary creature comforts. The room's decor was classic and warm, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom which had a bathtub was very large. Staff were courteous and helpful and room service was prompt. During our stay, we also met with a group of friends at Wellington's Restaurant and lounge situated off the lobby. The atmosphere was very pleasant and relaxed and the food was affordable and good. I recommend that you stay at this hotel when in Johnson City.

One way to really evaluate anything is to try it again and see if you were mistaken. Well the Carnegie retains its excellence over the long run. I have stayed here four times spread out over a decade and I know of little that retains its value over such a stretch. The whole place is immaculate. The rooms are spacious and meticulously maintained. Just one example is mildew in bathroom tiles. It is a devil at home to control for. The Carnegie however they do it - accomplishes that. The rooms are as quiet as they are elegant. How many hotels have both a full shower and a separate immaculate tub in a roomy bathroom? Five stars underrates this place. Solid service, solid value and predictable. (My only qualm is the room coffee was better than the dining room but I am picky when it comes to my morning brew). You cannot go wrong here. Any other facility would improve if it could approach the quality here. Wow.

I stayed here four years ago, in 2016, and the hotel has not changed one bit. The rooms and common areas are still spotless, and the staff are as friendly as one would expect in a small southern city. My only complaint is the local coffee that is served in Wellington's restaurant is not to my liking. I asked for a different brand, and it was excellent. Other than that, I give this hotel five stars!

Booked a block of rooms for wedding. Sales department never answered the phone and took days to return calls. When our guest called and ask for the wedding block rate the front desk told most of them there was no block rate and they were unaware of the wedding. We asked the front desk to give our guest gift bags as they arrived most did not receive them and there were items missing out of the bags for those who received them.
We asked for a 3 day extension of the block rate and the sales dept told us no, even though we had more than 20 rooms booked.
The front desk also gave a key to my room to someone who “promised” he was a close friend of mine, who we did not know. Huge security issue here !
The lobby is still nice but the rooms needed to be updated 10 years ago.

Thank you for recent review! We appreciate your feedback and have shared your review with our management staff. In reviewing the Room Block contract provided, we did make discounted rates available for your wedding guest to book, from JAN 3rd 2022 until NOV 25th 2022. However, due to the high demand for our property, on New Year’s Eve weekend, we were unable to accommodate any additional discount rates, after the contracted cut-off date. All wedding gift bags, provided to our Front Office manager were distributed to guests who had an opportunity to reserve, in your room block. As a guest list was not provided, for guests who reserved outside of the block, we communicated to wedding party, to send guests of the wedding to the front desk to receive gift bag. Our sales staff is available Monday – Friday, 9a – 5pm, to answer any questions regarding room blocks, or events. Due to the high demand for our property, on New Year’s Eve, the sales associate was not authorized to extend any further discounted rates. Our Front Desk policy requires a photo I.D. to provide keys to any guest during their stay; as well as explicit permission, of guest, to provide additional keys to any individual who is not listed on the reservation. We regret no inquiry was made with us before your departure, as we would have made any security issue our upmost priority. Thank you again for your review and congrats to the bride & groom!

I LOVE this place. It's so good that I'm in the process of buying a mattress just like the ones on their beds. Yep, it beats a beautyrest black. I like the vintage feel king sleigh bed nice. Very quiet spacious room. Sparkling clean. The bathrooms have double sinks and seperate tubs and showers. BR also super clean, spotless actually. Stayed here during COVID and felt completely comfortable. The staff are super helpful and kind. Will definitely stay again soon. Lots of yummy food at the restaurant and packed up perfectly so that I could dine in my room. The pool and spa look inviting but I didn't try them due to COVID. I'll give them a try next time. What was a work trip I didn't want turned into a blessing.

After staying home for two years, due to Covid, my husband and I were looking forward to taking a trip. One of our favorite stops is in Johnson City, Tennessee at the Carnegie Hotel. It was beautifully decorated for Christmas! Our room was great. However, before we left home, we called to see if we needed dinner reservations. We were told that wouldn’t be necessary because of “light foot traffic”. We accepted that and trusted that what we were told was accurate. However, upon arriving we were turned away at the dining room because they were “fully booked until after 8PM.” This was at 5:45 PM. We were able to get a light meal in the bar area which is beautiful but not very comfortable for dining. The most disturbing and disappointing thing was that I had to sit and look at the empty tables in the dining room while we ate our salads sitting on stools. The lesson we learned was that a dinner reservation should be made regardless of well meaning information.

Check-in is at 3pm. You'll have to call the hotel front desk on the day of arrival if you want any earlier. They won't guarantee an early check-in but it's easy enough to request one. Check-out is at 12pm noon.
