Wanting to get out of town we chose South Dakota as we had not been. Staying at Hisega Lodge was the right choice - close to the areas we wanted to explore, off the beaten path. The lodge is old and quaint. Our room was clean, the owners were fun to talk to and non-intrusive, the breakfasts were made fresh daily and very good. And if you like good coffee, they actually roast and grind their own, with their roaster on proud display in the lodge dining room. It was also fun to meet and chat with other lodgers from different parts of the country. Highly recommend!

Just finishing almost a week here this morning. Love this place. The location was perfect for us as a base for exploring north and south into the Black Hills. The lodge is beautiful - it's old, and "rustic" but in the best of ways. Owners and staff are helpful and friendly. No air conditioning, and it hit 100 degrees in spots we were at yesterday, but a fan in the window when we got back late in the evening and things cooled off nicely. With two exceptions because of the heat wave, nights were normally in the 50s for temp - windows open and perfect. As far as I can see, that is the only tradeoff that may not appeal to some, but no issue for us, it's one of the things we enjoyed. Nice quiet spot in the woods, stream rushing across the drive and the old style lodge is really beautiful. Beats a chain motel or any expensive "lodge" hands down. Breakfasts have been fantastic.

Room Tip: We stayed in a corner room upstairs on the stream side - allowed us to have windows on three...

Stay here! Our stay at Hisega was just lovely! My family of five stayed in CJ's cabin, enjoying the comfortable beds, nice towels and warm fireplace. The breakfasts were delicious, as were the pizzas! The lodge itself is so cozy; you feel a part of history by just staying here. It is quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of the Keystone/Mt. Rushmore area. We would definitely stay here if we ever return, but in the meantime will happily recommend the Hisega Lodge! Thank you, Tara and Mike, for your hospitality!

Read all the rave reviews. It's even better and delightfully quirky! Conversations while we gathered for breakfast (served at 8:30) were fun and interesting. That's also a good time to look at the scrapbook of Hisega's history. If we're in that area again, my husband and I will definitely stay there. Some of the people we met had been to Hisega 3, 4, and 5 times.

Our stay at Hisega Lodge was perfect from booking to finish. Even before we arrived the proprietors, Tara and Mike Flannery, took over all of our activity planning for us, attending to every detail. (For example, noting our late arrival time, Tara had a delicious homemade pizza waiting for us at checkin. And, worried we might need a lunch, unbid she packed a lovely picnic cooler for us. They gladly volunteered to shuttle us to our bike trailhead.) Indeed, Tara is a gourmet cook and produces delicious and original breakfast spreads for us every morning. (oh, and did we mention they roast their own coffee - and make a superb Latte!) There is plenty to do in and around the Black Hills, and Tara knows it all. Tara and Mike are avid outdoors people, and they can find you the best place to view Mt, Rushmore, the best drives through the Hills, the right fly fishing guide, the place to hike, rock climb, or bike. As natives of the area, they know the history, art, culture, and can fill any interest. The lodge itself is a classic piece of old Black Hills living, lovingly maintained and will all modern necessities. You will be transformed by the peaceful sounds of the Rapid Creek bubbling across the street - what a great way to nod off to sleep. We cannot say enough good things about this place and its people - a great destination for any and all.
