My husband and I visited the Sanctuary for the first (but definitely not last) time in May. It was truly amazing!! The decor is beautiful, the food delicious and the staff could not have been nicer!! We rented bikes and enjoyed riding the paved trails and on the beach. The beach was incredible. Chairs and umbrellas were set-up for us daily. Beverages and food were offered by the wonderful staff. The rooms are large and beautifully decorated. There is not anything that one could want that is not provided for you. The grounds are impeccable! Lovely flowers dress the walkways. I cannot say enough about this wonderful gem!!! I can't wait to go back!!!

Front desk was horrible. Our room wasn't ready at 4PM. I asked "about how much longer will it be". Answer, I have no idea. Spending a thousand dollars a night and it is impossible to make dinner reservations in ANY restaurant in the resort. For Days!. Concierge was nasty and unhelpful.

We have a large party staying at the hotel in August for a special occasion. The hotel does not allow you to book restaurant reservations online, it says you must call and book directly with the concierge. I have called multiple times over the last two weeks to make reservations and either no-one answers the phone or I'm directed to an operator who connects me to a voicemail. I have left my name and contact number and two weeks later, I still have not received any response or call back. This is very disappointing for a high end resort. We also had a terrible experience booking golf times, not only did we have to call back numerous times to speak to a live person, but the person we spoke to booked us for the wrong days/times. It should not be this difficult to make dining reservations, golf times and actually speak to a live person. If this is any indication as to the type of customer service to expect when we stay there, then we will seriously consider canceling our reservation and staying at a different resort.

Horrible stay - rude and unhelpful service especially concierge Mike and club level lounge who “forgot” to place our dinner reservations, we literally walked in to Jasmine's Porch and they didn’t have our name. Found out the Club Level concierge couldn’t get the restaurant on the phone all day so our attempt at a reservation was just disregarded. The restaurant is an elevator ride away. No excuse for not taking care of it. We did our best to get a reservation on our own at 5pm with no luck. We should have been alerted but it was simply forgotten. When we asked the girl at Club Level concierge what happened she didn't even apologize - she just said "oh I haven't been able to get them on the phone all day." They are literally located downstairs. The entire trip went off the rails when a fire alarm went off at 4:30am and we were instructed to go to the lobby. After a false alarm was announced with a laugh and an “whoopsie” we had trouble going back to sleep at 5:30am. The whole day was altered by the lack of sleep. Couple that with a forgotten dinner reservation, a rude concierge (Mike) who snapped at us when we asked about a bike rental, and a consistently empty coffee pot each morning in the 5th floor club. In order to get a cocktail in the club you must go find someone working there (usually seated behind a desk and looking very busy) and interrupt them to ask for a drink. It feels like they are doing you a favor versus giving the service that you paid to receive. After once or twice asking for a drink, my husband and I just got tired of feeling like beggars and stopped going in the "club." This stay was a waste of money and a waste of time. The staff needs to get over themselves and make the resort a decent place to be. There is nothing about the facilities or the staff that makes this a fine hotel or resort. It's a sleepy retirement home. Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else.

I loved my stay here. The hotel is gorgeous, as was our room, as is the property. Very clean. I loved the alligators and the deer too. I thought the service was 5 star, once on the property. The experience prior to arrival however was poor. It was impossible to get someone to make restaurant reservations. I was repeatedly transferred to the concierge desk, but no one would ever answer the phone. It was very disorganized. And the amount of time I spent trying to do this was ridiculous.

Dear 62898susan, Many thanks for choosing to spend time with us recently. It was truly our pleasure welcoming you. Thanks also for the kind words regarding your accommodations in The Sanctuary as well as the service you received. I'm happy to hear you were able to observe some of the fascinating wildlife which are kind enough to share the island with us. I am disappointed to learn about your difficulty securing dining reservations prior to your visit. Thank you for making us aware. We are currently taking active steps, such as restricting the services of the hotel concierge desk solely to registered hotel guests, to ensure guests are served in timely, efficient manner prior to their arrival. Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing to visit us. We hope we have the pleasure of a return visit.

My wife and I had a great visit…wonderful room, food was excellent. Our only complaint was breakfast…I was appalled that when we showed up about 8:30-9:00 we were informed of a wait of over 45 minutes and on Saturday it was over an hour, however there were obvious open tables. I can only assume that it had to do with staffing problems. Last thing you want is to awake from a nice sleep, get showered and dressed and go down to find it’s about an hour wait…when you pay as much as you pay at the Sanctuary you expect service commensurate and no 45-60+ minute wait for breakfast.

Dear brute43, First, please let me begin by wishing you a hearty happy fortieth anniversary. We are absolutely honored that you chose to celebrate it at The Sanctuary. Thank you very much for your kind words and the feedback. I'm sorry to hear about the disappointing wait for breakfast. We have been experiencing extremely high occupancy levels, and depending on the time one chooses to have breakfast there can be a wait. Thanks again for the feedback and for your visit, and we hope to have the pleasure to welcome you back.

Trying to make reservations and book golf times but can never get in touch with anyone. Very frustrating for a high end resort that we have visited previously. Multiple calls where you wait online only to be forced to leave a message. If you miss the return call (days later) you have to start the process over. Emails requesting tee times go unanswered. What has happened to this place?

The wife and I did a "stay-cation" @The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island. The staff @the hotel was professional & attentive. The rooms are exquisite. The landscape & the beach are beautiful. We checked in on a Friday and dined both nights @the Jasmine Porch. Gorgeous restaurant with a nice ambiance, professional wait-staff and DELICIOUS food...OMG. Overall, when it came time to check out on Sunday, we did not want to leave...

I stayed at the Sanctuary pre-Covid and found it to be an enjoyable stay, albeit very overpriced. But now it's overpriced and not that enjoyable. It's impossible to even get in touch with staff. I understand Covid has caused staffing shortages, but when you call them, they say it takes 72 hours to respond?! For a 5 star resort?! I would try one of the more affordable, clean hotels on the island with better customer service like the Andell Inn.

Dear Localsknowbestd2323, Many thanks for your recent visit with us. I am saddened to hear that during your stay we did not meet your rightful expectations for Five Star service. I would invite you to reach out to me directly so that I can learn more specifically about the service issues you encountered, apart from the slow response from our reservations staff. I would appreciate learning precisely where we dropped the ball so that I know how to address our shortcomings in those areas. Thanks once again for your visit and your valuable feedback.

I am comparing this supposedly 5 star hotel to other properties at that level that we have stayed at, such as the Conrad Tokyo, the Hotel Sacher in Vienna, or the Londoner. I am sorry, but this hotel is not even close. It’s the small things that make a difference. Here are some examples: The walls are thin, you can follow conversations in the next room if you want it or not. Make up mirror in the bathroom was broken. We asked for a fix, was never repaired. Shower is either hot or cold, nothing in between. We sat in the fancy rooms across from the lobby and and waited for over 30 min without getting serviced. Since there was a (dirty) drink menu on the table, we assumed there would be service. We finally left. Many used glasses and even a used mask on the tables. The dirty glasses and the mask were still there two hours later when we returned from dinner. Service in Jasmines Porch was not 5 star. It was my wife’s birthday and we wanted to sit by the window for breakfast. I asked the evening before and they would not accommodate. We were told by the hostess to be there early. Other 5 star properties would go out of their way to help. Table and chair had crumbs on it. Refills on coffee took forever. Omelet station at the buffet not operating. Several guests (us included) stood there for a while waiting for a cook to show up to help them until we asked and found out that it was closed that day. Even Embassy Suites get an omelette stating working….Maybe put a sign so your guests know? For a $38 buffet, the food selection was disappointing. Nothing special at all. Room often was not serviced until late in the day. One day we had to ask to get the room serviced. No turndown service using covid as a excuse. We wanted to sit by the pool for a bit, but the attendant was too busy chatting loudly on his phone, so he would not help us. Why is he even there if he won’t help? The best part was to check out. We tried to check out on the TV in the room, as recommended. That simply produced an error message on the TV. So, we went to the front desk, which was staffed by a single person. She was intensely staring at her computer screen, completely ignored the good morning that we said, and just said I need a minute. OK fine. After she had finished her work, We told her that we wanted to check out, and she just said room number and last name. I told her my last name and she obviously did not understand, so her response was “huh”? No ‘excuse me sir’ or something? After I spelled my last name, she said nothing. My wife and I stood there for a little bit, wondering what was going on and then another front desk employee came and asked us if she could help us. We told her that we didn’t know if we were good to leave or if we should stay there and then it turned out that we were all checked out. No goodbye, thank you for your stay or maybe have a good return trip, nothing. That’s just completely unacceptable for a so-called five star hotel. If you are in a bad mood and you work a customer service job like that, either hide your bad mood or stay at home. This last interaction with the hotel staff left a very bitter aftertaste for us. It is a beautiful property in a great location, but maybe 4 stars. The staff is not trained at all to the level a 5 star hotel would require. Maybe the staff should see how other 5 star hotels operate.

Dear Joe L, Many thanks for your recent visit with us, and please share our warm wishes on the occasion of your wife's recent birthday. We are honored that you all chose to mark the occasion with us. Thanks also for your frank feedback. I am disappointed to hear that the experience we provided did not meet your expectations for five star service. Your thorough feedback is a good reminder that being rated a Five Star property by such a respected authority as Forbes Travel Guide is not an event, rather it is a continuous process that we must execute day in and day out. I will be sure to share your thoughts with our staff as a salient reminder. Again, many thanks for your visit, and I hope we have the pleasure to welcome you back for a future visit.
