Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island offers a modern retreat with recent renovations that appeal to those who enjoy a clean, updated environment complemented by fire pits and live music, despite some finding the atmosphere a bit sterile. While service quality varies, with reports of both friendly staff and instances of unresponsiveness, guests frequently commend the resort's cleanliness and beach proximity.
Room experiences are mixed, with some highlighting comfort and others pointing out cleanliness and noise issues. The resort's amenities, including beach access, are generally appreciated, but the value proposition is contested by guests who feel overcharged for the experience.

Detailed Reviews
I travelled by myself with my two kids (6 and 8) to Sonesta Resort Hilton Head for 5 days in August. We were not sure which resort to go with, and settled on this one in part because it had a kids club. And I'm so glad we did!
The kids club, called Just Us Kids, which is run by a very nice woman named Kathie, was one of the highlights of our stay. The kids loved it and tell me they rate it 10 stars! They are pretty difficult customers so that is high praise. You can sign up for the kids club for a half day or full day. I had my kids try it out for a half day first, and after that they asked to go back one more half day and one full day! Every day has a different theme and the kids did arts and crafts, as well as daily trips to the beach and time at the pool, which my kids loved the most of all. Couldn't recommend this more for anyone also wanting some time to themselves while on vacation!
The resort itself is fine. It looks like they recently redid the rooms and everything was new and clean. One thing that I really missed was room service. I haven't heard of a resort without room service. There are a few restaurants on site and you can order food from them to take up to your room, but sometimes the wait could be long. Also, given the layout of the property, depending on where your room is, the walk to the ground floor area with restaurants (and anywhere else you need to go) can be quite long.
One other thing that appealed to me is that I had seen online that this hotel has washers and dryers for guests to use. Always a plus when traveling with little kids. There is one washer and one dryer for the entire property that are hidden in a far away corner of the 5th floor and not indicated with signage anywhere. There are signs for Ice, Vending and other things, but not for the laundry facilities...I found this a bit strange. Also, no one told me this was available, I had to ask about it myself. In general, the information given at check in was minimal. They refer you to a two page resort guide that also has minimal information. You're just sort of left on your own to figure things out. Other places we've stayed at have apps these days with information, or at least more information available in the room.
Also, I haven't stayed at a resort before where there wasn't a bellhop available to help with luggage. I was left with my two little kids to carry our very heavy luggage to our very far away room on my own.
None of things are dealbreakers. I just found it lacking for a place that calls itself a "resort" and charges a separate resort fee at that. For what exactly I couldn't figure out. But, if you manage expectations, this is a good place to stay with a great kids club. We would return.

This resort is wonderful! The grounds are beautiful and the beach is PERFECT! We enjoyed hunting for sand dollars (always returned to their ocean bed home) and pool time. I have to say, the first day I mocked the adult pool (I even called it the garage pool) because it is set aside in a cement alcove. However, we had a few very steamy days and that pool became a welcome super cooling refuge.
We frequented the pool bar(Sweet Cane) as we spent most of our days on the beach or at the pool. Our waiter Jason was AMAZING!! Seek him out if you are on property. He is one of a kind and gave us the best service - with a smile!
We had a room overlooking the roof for the first couple of days, but were able to move to a garden room for the remainder of our stay. It's a little pricier, but worth it if you want to enjoy your balcony at all. The beds and pillows were super comfy! I would go back in a heartbeat!

We just returned from a wonderful trip to Hilton Head and stayed at the Sonesta Resort. I can't find any negatives to say about the place! The resort and new guest rooms are absolutely beautiful! I loved that the floors of the guest rooms were tile and not carpet (think sand, cleanliness etc.). The housekeeping cleaned our room everyday and always provided enough towels when we went thru them. Every staff member we encountered was pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed the family friendliness there and felt really comfortable letting our kids stray a bit from us. By the second day they were begging to do the Kids Camp after doing the daily craft time and spending time with the kids/leisure staff. Best money spent of the trip! They had the best time making pudding, slime, crafts, a water balloon fight and the girl (about college aged) even swam with them in the pool. It was such a nice break for my husband and I. We stayed on the property and were able to have some one on one time together listening to live music and having a few drinks. Kathie, the leisure and recreation manager was super kind to us too- she supervised the Kids Camp and helped map out a plan for us when we rented bikes. Oh- BIKES! The resort has bikes to rent and a trail close by which leads you right to Coligny Plaza. There is also a free shuttle to Coligny. The beach is steps away and just gorgeous. In addition to the kid crafts etc. there is an outdoor area with a ping pong table, beanbags/cornhole, life size Connect Four, Checkers, and plenty of hammocks for relaxing. The resort restaurants were good too- we enjoyed a nicer dinner in the main restaurant, some pizza and snacks from the bar restaurant (they even have an ice cream cart there sometimes) and a good lunch at the outdoor restaurant where they had live music. The landscape and overall shape and cleanliness of the resort is a 10 in my opinion. I can't say enough about this gem of a resort!! I hope you stay and have the same feedback!

We typically stay at this resort every few years for a conference. We were very disappointed to see how this hotel has declined in quality and value. The positives: the grounds are still beautifully maintained and the beach access is fabulous.
The negatives: First, the renovation of the hotel has resulted in the decor shifting from nautical to modern sterile and lacking any sort of ambiance. Our room was devoid of any style. Cheap vinyl plank flooring and vinyl covered chairs made it feel like a hospital room. No art on the walls. Our room did not at all look like the stock photos for the hotel.
Second, the high-speed internet WiFi is horrible. Oftentimes the connection was dropped or we were simply unable to connect at all. This was a major problem when trying to do work during the day and stream a show at night. I would've expected a far better WiFi connection at a resort like this.
Third, the hotel has a multi-story center atrium with the lobby and bar at the bottom. This creates a huge amount of unwanted noise late into the evening. The loudness continued until at least 11pm both nights of our stay. We put a towel under the door and cranked up our white noise to drown it out.
Fourth, I really have no idea what the daily resort fee covers - likely nothing truly useful. The WiFi is terrible as already mentioned. You have to pay to rent a beach chair and umbrella, you have to pay to use the pool toys and games. You have to pay to use the bikes. Breakfast is not included. It seems like all activities are an additional charge.
Overall, the location is great. However, the accommodations and amenities leave much to be desired at a price point where I would've expected a lot more. This was likely our last stay at the Sonesta.

We stayed here for 4 nights (my wife , my 11 month old and I) at the same time as 2 separate conventions were attending. This was a mistake.
I love paying over 500.00 for a suite (after taxes, fees and amenity fee) to not have any hooks in the bathroom to hang my towel in. Wtf people. I've stayed at motels on the side of the road that has hooks in the bathroom. Go down to the local home Depot. Drop 15 bucks on 5 hooks and hang them in the bathroom. Let's pay attention to details, shall we? Just sad.
The food is incredibly average. So much so that we left the property every day to get breakfast and dinner. I had one good meal, which was the watermelon and feta salad with fish. Wonderfully tasty and well prepared. Everything else, stay way.
Onto the conventions. Can we not have all the people who's biz are paying a massive discounted rate for their rooms, run down to the pool at 7am to lay out their 7 towels on chairs and then go back to bed to then come down again at noon? Pool staff, remove the towels. What is this? What are we doing here. Let's have some civilized societal norms. For such an 'upscale' hotel this is pretty lame.
The front desk staff are wonderful as are the bellhops. All kind and cheerful and helpful at all times. You have incredible employees.
Just get better chef's and tell the pool staff to remove the towels after 30 min.

Fantastic resort right on the beach. All staff are very nice and friendly. Check in was easy, we even received an upgrade to a pool side room. The room was very large and very clean. We loved that housekeeping came every day to clean the room. There are many activities scheduled everyday and we enjoyed playing Bingo by the pool every afternoon at 4 pm. The beach is just over the sand dune and when you return, there are several showers to help wash away the sand before going back to your room. Food in the outside bar area was very good. It is a close drive to the activities around the island. Parking was also easy. Would definitely return to this resort next time we come.

Our whole experience was very underwhelming. I'm very surprised with the good reviews this hotel receives after our experience here. The rooms were just ok. As a family of 5 we were very crammed. There were some updates in the bathroom but that was about it. The balcony overlooked the ballroom which had huge air conditioning units on it that were so loud you couldn't sit outside or hold a conversation because you couldn't hear. The electrical plugin for the blow dryer in the bathroom was wiggly and would turn the dryer on and off if I moved the wrong way while blow drying my hair. The shower constantly dripped water even with the handled turned all the way off. Our room felt grungy. The trash cans and other fixtures were rusted. The pool was just ok and appears bigger in the photos than it actually is. The front desk staff was not very friendly and neither were the wait staff at the pool. The only friendly staff we ran into was housekeeping and we never once saw or interacted with a manager. The restaurants on site lack a variety of menu options and are way overpriced for food that is bland and just ok. This was definitely NOT the experience I was expecting for a hotel that charges as much as they do for a room per night. The only positives were how close the hotel is to the beach and the kids club staff. My kids loved feeding the turtles every morning and doing some of the kids club activities.

With 4 children, I've had lots of different experiences with "Kids Clubs" on cruises and resorts over the years. The Just for Kids club at the HH Sonesta is by far the BEST program we've experienced. Kathie Sendra runs this program and she & her staff are incredibly fantastic! Each day is a fun theme with well thought out activities, crafts, nature walks, beach time AND pool time. It allowed me to enjoy beach time boogie boarding with my older kids and leisurely restaurant meals, feeling guilt-free, because I knew my 5 year old was in good hands. He had a great time with the staff, all of whom were very engaged with him. Lunch and/or snacks were included depending on am/pm session. We got a room rate that included the Just for Kids program, but even paying for it separately is well worth the price! As for the rest of resort, I found all staff to be friendly, hard working & willing to go out of their way to accommodate requests. Our room & the common areas were very clean and the food was decent. There are plenty of other dining/shopping options in such close proximity so that was a plus. We enjoyed walking the beach to Coligny Plaza and then returning by free island trolley or hotel provided shuttle. My 1st time to HH and I would definitely return. Pack bug spray!

I chose this Pension for our South Carolina Road Trip to rest for two quiet days on Hillton Head Island. I had carefully looked at the hotels reviews, the photos leave the situation and it seemed better placed with quality service. Let her not be our disappointment when we arrived 🤦‍♀️ We were greeted by a young man who wanted to finish His day rather than do our check in. Looking nonchalant and disengaged, he even mentioned to his colleague that it was time for a break. The lobby reflects a recent renovation but the decoration is simple and quite minimalist. When we arrived we immediately realized that we had made a mistake. A lot of noise, a swimming pool full of children, families overwhelmingly and dogs;-) no misunderstanding, we love children, dogs, but not at all that is what we came to get when we came to this Pension. Failing to settle down quietly we continued to visit the surrounding area during the day to return in the evening. The room is perfect, renovated of good quality quite recent. The service is average, the second day they forgot to make the room 🙄
The way to the beach is nice, with two ponds, lush vegetation, very well maintained La, watch out and a beach quite decent.
We did not test the restaurant, either for breakfast or dinner, but we tested the takeaways at the bar the mediocre quality. A special mention for the bartender who is extremely efficient, and very kind
As for the Award Value, it is not good, an Inn of this type of Award must have a much higher standard. We travel bcp to the US. Never met this kind of disappointment
A Trip Tip for Pension Managers: mention on their website that it is a Pension for Pet Friendly Families
It would have saved us disappointment for other customers like us looking for calm and quality
Rating it 3 stars for its ideal location and for the quality of the room

We did not test the restaurant, either for breakfast or dinner, but we tested the takeaways at the bar the mediocre quality. A special mention for the bartender who is extremely efficient, and very kind
As for the Award Value, it is not good, an Inn of this type of Award must have a much higher standard. We travel bcp to the US. Never met this kind of disappointment
A Trip Tip for Pension Managers: mention on their website that it is a Pension for Pet Friendly Families
It would have saved us disappointment for other customers like us looking for calm and quality

Horrible experience. The room we had was brand new and the plumbing was routed to the shower so every time you flush the toilet it goes straight to the shower. Right when I checked into the room there was feces in the shower. I thought they just didn’t clean it. I called the front desk and they said there wasn’t any more rooms left to transfer to and sent housekeeping up to clean it up. Housekeeping was extremely rude and said I probably threw up in the shower. I called the hotel on my cell phone and they did actually have rooms left, they just refused to move us. After all this I spoke with the manager the next day since I wasn’t able to take a shower or even use the rest room, he assured me I would be getting my money back. Well I didn’t get my money back, in fact I was charged even more for the room! the manager refuses to return emails concerning the situation. Worse service of any hotel I have ever stayed at by far.

As of February 2025, yes. I was just there.
We paid for ours at checkout. It depends on what you booked as to whether or not yours was prepaid.
Definitely not included but there are several options for breakfast. You can sit in the restaurant and order off menu or go to the hot buffet. There is also quick grab breakfast options at the lobby bar/cafe. It is a little on the pricey side but the food was really good.
There were tennis courts. I couldn’t notice pickle ball.
