Home that is historically famous because it was the residence of Mary Boykin Chesnut and her husband General James Chesnut, this lovely cottage represents architecture of the 1850 time period and was saved during the war by General Sherman. History is well documented by the owner in her famous diary. A Bed and Breakfast in downtown Columbia for over 30 years, the home has recently been purchased by new owners, and lovingly renovated to the period with updated furnishings. It is 5 minutes from Main Street and the State House, the University of South Carolina, and the hospitality of the Vista and Five Poin .Located near many of the historical sites, as well as the Township Auditorium, the home makes the perfect place to stay and walk to venues, concerts, and restaurants. The rooms are elegantly decorated, furnished with comfortable bed linens, and compete breakfast is served! Plenty of free parking is available, as well as a beautiful garden that is meant to be enjoyed.

We were the only couple in the Inn that night. Mary greeted us warmly and told us she had an urgent appointment in the morning and could we be down for breakfast at 8:ooam. We had wanted 9:00am but compromised on 8:15. She's a busy woman so she got distracted and burned the bacon but came back with ham which was nice. Bed very comfortable and room was quiet.

I loved our stay here, Mary was the perfect host, the room was beautiful, a step back in time, but with modern amenities. Close to the Township Auditorium for a concert we attended. A few minutes walk to nearby bars and restaurants. Breakfast was fantastic too. I can’t recommend highly enough.

We stayed at the Chestnut Cottage because of the close proximity to Township auditorium. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was spacious and comfortable. There is a relaxing front porch and breakfast was great. It was nice to be able to choose a time for breakfast. The host was very helpful and friendly. Would recommend for anyone needing something near the downtown area.

Our family attended a wedding weekend in Columbia and we booked 3 rooms at the Chestnut Cottage Bed & Breakfast. From the moment we stepped into the parlor of this historical home we met the owner Mary Sparrow and was immediately delighted we had selected this remarkable B&B. The house is loaded with history, beautifully appointed furnishings & the best of charm! The guest rooms were large, beautifully decorated with small touches like flowers in our room, bottles of water, chocolates, etc...but my favorite touch was the delicious breakfasts served every morning gathered together in the dining room. Another favorite was the front porch swing and the rocking chairs. As you know, a swing soothes the soul and the porch was magical at night! If your plans take you to Columbia, just call Mary she can tell you everything about the history, sites and dining in the area - she is an encyclopedia of knowledge. My family can't wait to visit Columbia and enjoy the pleasure of what the Chestnut Cottage B&B adds to ones life - Culture, Comfort & true Southern Hospitality!

If you are looking for something unique and different from the large chain hotels - stay at Mary's B&B. Luxurious, oozing with character, and a host for whom nothing is too much trouble. Bed really comfortable, antiques everywhere and a great breakfast as well.

From our initial warm greeting until our departure, Mary treated us like family & was a delightful & attentive hostess. This home is gorgeously furnished, filled with so much history that Mary makes so very interesting & beautifully charming. We were in Columbia for a wedding & did not want the usual "hotel" stay. The Chesnut Cottage was far superior in many ways! Our stay in the Jefferson Davis room was very comfortable & roomy with a large bath, plush robes, bottled water, & delightful reading about the home's history, though we did hear ambulances in the night on the street in front. We had morning coffee on the porch swing & our breakfast was delicious. Mary gladly accommodated food allergies we had informed her of. We travel through Columbia often en route to places, but had never overnighted there. The Chesnut Cottage & Mary's hospitality left us looking for excuses to stop over there in the future or even make a special trip to learn more about the city & enjoy Mary's company!

I don't think I can say much that hasn't been said before about this fantastic bed & breakfast in the heart of Columbia. So I won't even try. It's charming, historic, amazing, top-drawer, elegant, classy, convenient, and hospitable. In a world of look-alike corportate cinderblock hotels 2 blocks from the freeway, The Chesnut Cottage is a breathtaking example of what a home away from home can truly be. I can't imagine a better experience.
