My wife and I just finished up our 3 night mini-moon after recently getting married. We love Charleston and we were looking forward to our stay at the Dewberry. There were many great things about the Dewberry, especially the food at Henrietta’s and the drinks at the Living Room. The complimentary car service was a great benefit especially since we had rainy weather each day we were there. The front desk, valet and concierge were excellent and very helpful. We unfortunately did not receive any turn down service 2 of the 3 nights, but Suzanne at the front desk came to the rescue with a generous credit to the room. My only complaints would be the size of the rooms were disappointing and not reflective of the price paid. They fall short of luxury hotels in my opinion. Also, the room doors are by far the loudest of any hotel I have ever stayed at. The walls of our room vibrated and echoed with the sound of any door that was closed near our room. Quite a few times I was almost asleep only to be awakened by someone closing their door. Perhaps some dampers like other hotels and this wouldn’t be a problem. Very bad design. Definitely not something I’ve experienced at a luxury or any other hotel.
Thank Matt T

It was the huge number of five-star reviews for The Dewberry on TripAdvisor that led us to stay here last weekend. What we found, though, is that although it certainly is a unique luxury property, there are a few caveats that potential guests should know in advance:

1 - The Dewberry is housed in a converted 1950s/60s-era federal office building: basically a low, gray, concrete rectangular box. Not sure how it got the designation of "historic," but if someone was picturing an elegant and stately grand dame with an interesting, storied past, they would be disappointed.

2 - The Dewberry is pretty close to everything in historic Charleston, but not in the center of anything. Wear good walking shoes or plan on taking a lot of Ubers to dinner, unless you eat at the hotel.

3 - Beware of their one-bedroom suites. The way the suites are designed (I assume because of the hotel's office-building past) the one-bedroom suites offer a windowless, interior living room and a very small separate bedroom. Unless you don't mind hanging out in dark, windowless rooms, you are better off saving the money and taking a king room sans living room or splurging for a Charleston Flats suite. The latter is a large corner room without walls separating the living room from the bedroom, but, at 500 square feet, is spacious and comfy, with a lovely double-sink bathroom and freestanding tub.

Aside from the caveats, the hotel was still a great place for a visit to Charleston. The concierges were lovely, the housekeeping staff and management were excellent, and the hotel had a cool, retro vibe: all the furniture and accessories seem right out of an episode of "Mad Men."

What's more, a wedding was going on the second night of our stay and it looked fantastic -- cool, sophisticated and fun. With The Dewberry's ballroom just off the lobby, wedding guests certainly don't have to feel like they are in the bowels of the building, but rather, in the center of the action. And the hotel staff seem to handle all the excitement just fine.

We loved the hotel. Great style and excellent service.

Special shout out to Molly, who drove us in the house car a few times, and was great -- wonderfully knowledgeable and charming! Thank you, Molly!

One improvement: hotel needs coffee makers in the rooms. Many of us reqire coffee before we can go out for coffee... The idea of getting dressed to go downstairs, or ordering room service, just isn’t the same. (A small Nespresso machine would not spoil the excellent aesthetic.)

This is a beautiful historic hotel well located on Meeting Street. Beautiful interior, luxury rooms, amazing cocktail bar and lounge, great restaurant. This hotel is well worth the price. We were here on business and took advantage of their corporate rate. The hotel provides excellent service. In addition, they have a town car available to guests as well as a fleet of bicycles. This is a great town to see by bike
