The Grand Bohemian Hotel Charleston wins favor for its prime location and artistic ambiance, with guests regularly applauding the stylish decor and cleanliness. The rooftop bar and in-house art gallery are among the amenities guests find delightful. However, while the service is often described as friendly, some travelers have faced disappointments with valet and room service. Rooms are generally clean and spacious, yet critiques include firm bedding and dimly lit interior rooms. Despite its charm, the value proposition is questioned by guests expecting more for the premium pricing.

Let me preface this review by saying the Grand Bohemian‘s art deco style is NOT our style at all! I knew this going in but we chose the hotel for location and on-site bar/restaurant.
The location is perfect! Wedged between all the shops on King street and the great restaurants around Meeting street. Just a few blocks from the historic Charleston city market. Rooftop bar and restaurant served up good drinks and the breakfast we had there was very good. There was a little outdoor courtyard which had live music and a cigar bus one night which was a cute touch.
So in these ways the hotel delivered.
Also, all the staff we dealt with were friendly and helpful with the exception of valet.
There were a few negatives. There is absolutely no mention or upgrades for your Marriott status. Rooms are small and our particular room not only had no view but had the tiniest window! There was this huge long wall and the window was tucked into one side( picture below). It gave the room a claustrophobic feel with not enough natural light. Also- we found the pictures in the room kind of disturbing and not soothing (see below). Shower was nice and large but had a very funky smell which my husband said was mold. Lights for entire bathroom are outside the bathroom and there are no fans. So The rooms were definitely a fail for us.
Lastly when we arrived there was no where to pull up and there was no valet in sight. By the time we went in to try to find somebody there were five cars blocking the street lined up waiting for the valet behind us. So we just grabbed a cart and took our own bags. When leaving it was the same situation. One valet- several waiting. So again we grabbed a cart, and took our things down to the car. The valet came over and my husband gave him a nice tip. You would think he would at least help unload our bags into the car but he just took the tip and walked away. Given the tiny valet area to pull into, and the fact that you pretty much have to valet your car, There really needs to be several valet’s on site all the time in my opinion. If you like art deco, a rooftop bar, a central location, and don’t mind the quirks, this hotel would work for you. For us, there is another Marriott property very close by that is more our style that we will choose for our next visit.

Beautiful and very clean hotel. We chose the room with a king size bed. The room was very spacious with a large walk-in shower, mini fridge and a great selection of Starbucks coffee and teas in the room.

We stayed here over Thanksgiving weekend. The hotel is in a wonderful location. Last year we stayed at the Courtyard a few more blocks out of downtown. Those few blocks make a difference when doing a lot of walking.

They have valet parking but the parking lot is also literally next door to the hotel, so we just parked ourselves.

We received an upgrade the a corner room. Room 222. There were 2 windows, king bed, desk, 2 chairs and of course bathroom. There is a fridge in the room, not very cold. Our view was of the fire station. It was entertaining to watch them back in after being out. I was worried they might wake us up at night, but I guess if they went out on a call, they didn't turn sirens on.

The rooftop bar is very nice. Has our favorite beer ever, Kentucky Bourbon Barrell Ale. The cushions on the couches and chairs did look quite worn. The service was good. We didn't eat up on the roof at all.

We were travelling with 2 other couples. We all did the wine blending class on evening. This was so fun!!!! Peter, the sommelier, was very informative and fun. Lots and lots of laughs were had. At the end, you have a bottle of wine with your own label and name to take home.

The hotel is very dog friendly. We didn't bring our 130 lb dog, but our friends each brought their 80ish lbs dogs. It's so great to see all the dogs in the hotel.

Masks were worn every where in the hotel and hand sanitizer stations were every where, including the elevator.

The property reopened a couple of weeks ago. This hotel is part of the Marriott Autograph collection and therefore in their "Premium " category. Unfortunately, aside from the price, this recent stay had no connection in any way to the term Premium. All amenities from the property had been eliminated. The $300 per night they charge was probably about the same as the pre-closure rate. They did not disclose any of this at the time the reservation was made. Specifically, when you arrive, the desk at the driveway is vacant. So much for valet parking. They said they offer restaurant service for breakfast. Not exactly. As a Lifetime Titanium, you're given a voucher for a pathetic room service continental breakfast. Included in this option is juice or coffee. You have to pay if you want both. The gym is closed. After you check in, you are told that self parking is available 2.5 blocks away in an open unwatched area on a dark side street. They then charge $15 for that. Water in the room? If you want it, you can pay $5 for it. The best we learned on the second day. We returned around 4:00 and the room was not made. We called downstairs and were told they are not offering housekeeping during the stay. This must be said again. They do not clean the room, clean the bathroom, make the bed or change the towels during your stay! You think they might mention that little detail when you make the reservation and especially when you check in. Not a word was said! The manager acknowledged the problem, but said because of the pandemic these cutbacks were necessary. Really? The pandemic didn't prohibit them from warning about these conditions? Is the pandemic responsible for the premium price? The stay that was originally booked for three nights was cut to two. A more senior manager did agree to refund one night. This disaster was entirely of their own making. Over the last 20+ years, I have had more than 1000 nights at Marriott properties. This was far and away, the worst.

This hotel is centrally located in the Charleston Historic District, meaning you can walk to pretty much everything from here. That is the best part about this hotel. But most of the rooms have no view whatsoever; housekeeping service is spotty; the restaurant's breakfast offerings are slim and overpriced; the fitness center is tiny and not well kept (towels were not replaced and video monitors had no video--audio only). The only parking option is valet for $39/night. The front desk staff, on the other hand, is extremely accommodating. David Knaupff was great, helpful, caring and generous. He got us into a better room after we complained about the higher priced "larger room" that looked into the hotel's art gallery on one side (where anyone could see in) and a construction site/wall on the other side. Despite his kindness, we would not stay here again.

This facility is in a great location and convenient to King St. The neighborhood felt safe. We utilized the valet parking. The building is clean, the front desk staff professional and the decor pleasing. Our room on the second floor was quiet and spacious. I need to take a star off for the following reasons. First there was some mildew in the shower as well as hair. The shower is enormous and probably a pain in the neck for housekeeping. The rest of the room was spotless. If the manager is reading this, let housekeeping know to spray bleach along the grout below the shower door in room 208. Also it’s a little surprising there is no Smart tv. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a Marriott that didn’t have one considering how many people use streaming services. Lastly, we had breakfast at the upstairs restaurant and they served tepid coffee. We asked them to bring out hot coffee. I shouldn’t have to ask for hot coffee in an Autograph hotel.

Every one of our wants and needs was met at this hotel! The artwork is beautiful as is the condition of the hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Housekeeping came to our room several times a day to check on us to be sure we had what we needed: one in the morning to clear, once in the late afternoon, and once to offer us turn down service and to bring us chocolates. I loved having an actual Starbucks in the lobby and Mico, the restaurant, was great for a drink and appetizers. The hotel had events that brought in a lot of people on the weekend we were there (a wedding and a fashion show) so we did not get up to the rooftop bar because it was too crowded.

We just spent 2 nights at Grand Bohemian Charleston. I came away with mixed feelings. I have traveled fairly extensively and stayed in every level of hotel high end, luxury and basic. I can appreciate each for what they are in the right context.

There was nothing “wrong” with the hotel at all. It just felt very average. For the price it simply didn’t compete with other properties in the $500 a night range. That said, they were fully booked and it is Spring Break. Still, this feels like a $250 a night average hotel. Property is artsy & unique, similar to a funky W Hotel type vibe. The hotel was not dirty but feels tired and lacks any kind of wow factor.

Pros: great/convenient location, friendly front desk staff, quiet, front desk acknowledged status and offered platinum points or complimentary breakfast without my having to bring it up and graciously offered complimentary glass of champagne or water bottles.

Cons: food is mediocre at best, coffee is subpar for a “autograph” or any property marketing itself to a higher end clientele property (basic coffee versus set a Nespresso), found it odd there were only 2 towels in a room with 2 beds and 2 registered guests, no help/hospitality from valet.

The valet/bellman thing was pretty significantly lacking. We arrived, a mom & 11 year old daughter, carrying multiple bags each, and each rolling suitcases as well. No greeting as we arrived/walked past bell desk, no offer to assist with our bags or provide us a luggage cart, door kept swinging closed while we were dragging bags in with no attempt to help hold the door open… not the end of the world but again at $500 a night range I expect a greeting and an offer for help of some kind with bags or the door as is expected at this level.

Had the stay have cost half what it did I would have felt better about it but the shortcomings and overall averageness/lack of any kind of higher end hotel elements or wow factor left me with mixed feelings. If I could do it again for the price I would stay at the Loutrel etc.

Very disappointed in room Room was very small and you could not adjust thermostat Had to call maintenance to adjust thermostat from the control room Ended up setting thermostat too cool but had to live with it. The shower had two settings super hot or super cold , no in between. We were there on points and it was like they were punishing us. The people at the front desk treated us like we were beggars off the street I guess they do not like repeat customers They do not have to worry we will never be back. Oh , but the last night we paid for a room and they moved us to a larger room and everything worked. I guess the small room was used as punishment for Marriott return customers In the restaurant I ordered hot tea and the girl asked what tea I wanted but brought me Earl Gray with the tag torn off I guess she thought I was too dumb to k ow the difference. Apparently they had run out of the other kinds and only had Earl Gray ( not my favorite ) I guess all the stores in town were out also

After having wonderful experiences at the Grand Bohemian hotels in Charlotte and Asheville earlier in the month, we decided to try Charleston. We were greeted at the small, cramped hotel registration/valet parking area by an empty Bellman’s stand.

Check-in was at 4 o’clock and our room was not yet ready by 3:45. They directed us upstairs to the only restaurant they have - which is high end bar food. At over $700 a night for our stay we would’ve expected a fine dining option but about the best thing on the menu was a well-made hamburger. Waitstaff seemed confused, perplexed, and inexperienced and attentive. There’s so much competition for fine dining in Charleston know that the lack of a fine dining experience was a big disappointment.

And then there’s the artwork. Art, of course, is subjective and much of the yard was absolutely breathtaking. However, our room overlooked a courtyard of more modern art, not my favorite. But in our hotel room was a painting of an angry woman staring straight at the bed. Hardly setting the scene for any romantic endeavors. Why in the world they place that there is anybody’s guess.

With so many fine dining options closer to the market Square, we’re likely to stay at Charleston place during our next visit or the Francis Marion hotel, close to the famed Halls chophouse which would highly recommend.
