Not the hotel it used to be. We booked our room through American Express and had booked a corner suite. Upon our arrival, the front desk could not locate our reservation. They finally found it and I asked since we booked through American Express if there were any upgrades available. They said we were already upgraded to a corner suite. I told them we booked the corner suite and they did not upgrade us. They told us there were no upgradable rooms available and proceeded to ask us to sit in the lobby while they located our room. We sat down and waited another 15 minutes (now 30 min since we arrived at the desk) until they finally took us to our room. The hallway when getting off the elevator smelled. Upon entering our room, it as well smelled damp and very musty. We know that Charleston being at sea level can sometimes have musty buildings but hearing that everything had been renovated at MP, we thought it would be nice and clean. After being in the room for about 5 minutes, we called the front desk because the damp, mildewy smell was overwhelming (after trying the first phone that did not work) and notified them of the smell. They moved us to another suite room on the concierge floor which was significantly larger with an outdoor patio. Somehow it just mysteriously opened up since they told us there were no rooms available for upgrade. The hallway smelled as well of dampness and cigarettes and it was like that all week. The room smell was much better but only because someone sprayed an air freshner up there right before we went to the room and it was so strong we had to open the doors and windows. This room felt damp after a day and the a/c would never get the room below 71 degrees. (We like to sleep with it cooler) Additionally, the speed dial buttons to any of the services on the phone did not work at all so you had to dial 0 for any service. The concierge lobby on our floor used to be brighter and had more to offer for breakfast and the afternoon snacks. There are no more waters or soft drinks served, only a machine to buy from which took my wife's money and she went to the front desk to get a refund only to be told they don't manage the machines and could not reimburse her for it. They definitely cut way back on the offerings for a true concierge floor. We designated times for our turn down service and cleanings upon our check in but received no turn down service the first night, no Greek cookies, nothing. We told the front desk the next day and they said they would make sure we received service. That night when we came home from dinner, they had replaced our towels but nothing else. We told them again the next morning and finally received turn down service our final night. All in all, the employees do not seem that happy and no one seems to care that you are paying a premium for the rooms. Not to mention, they still don't offer a full breakfast like the competing hotels in Charleston. This hotel has seen its better days. We won't be back after staying here for 17 years.

If you don't mind cockroaches it's a great roof top. I don't care to share my cocktails with Palmetto bugs. It shows a dirty establishment. There were scores of them. Where theres one there are many.

Room Tip: Don't be fooled. The southern vernacular for cockroaches is a palmetto bug. Check it out on wiki....

Awesome rooftop! Didn't stay at the hotel but visited the rooftop a couple of times on a recent trip. Super chill, laid back, and awesome views of the town, the harbor, the bridge, and the USS Yorktown. The mojitos are a must!

Great location, excellent staff and fabulous Restaurant “Grill 225”. Smaller, family owned Hotel with the old Charleston charm (lead crystal ice buckets, coffee and pastries in the morning on the Concierge’s Floor). Only parking is in front of the Hotel (only 3 or 4 spots) but Valet is usually close by. Across the street from famous “City Market” and close to/walking distance from several restaurants and Museums.

The hotel is super nice! The room was spacious and very clean and comfortable bed. The staff is very nice. They have a good restaurant downstairs and also a rooftop bar. That rooftop bar is the best area to have a refreshing drink and watch the sunset. Also a good place to enjoy the pool. In my opinion they should have umbrellas attached to the lounge chairs at the pool. It can get very hot up there.

While the location is great and the accommodations were adequate, the service was marginal for the price. I expect more friendly and exacting service at such a highly-rated and highly-priced hotel. Stayed at similar hotel the night before which was comparable in price and much more accommodating to guests. The service was better elsewhere and the hours of operation (meaning food and beverage and restaurant availability) were not commensurate with the rating of the hotel or the price.

My friend and I had an impressive and enjoyable experience at this charming and exquisitely furnished hotel. My room was beautifully decorated and comfortable. I was especially impressed with the meticulous attention to detail in housecleaning everywhere. We enjoyed the expansive view of Charleston from the rooftop Pavilion Bar and of course, the popular hotel restaurant Grill 225. I loved Charleston and being a guest of this lovely hotel added to my memorable visit. I hope to return someday.

The hotel is in a great location for anyone looking to enjoy Charleston by foot. It does not have the grandest of lobbies, but the bars, both upstairs on the roof and on the ground floor are welcoming and vibrant. My double queen room was spacious with 2 large windows, apparently sound proofed as I heard nothing from busy Market and Bay Street. Housekeeping was excellent and the front desk staff/valet were all very friendly. Coffee, tea, pastries and fruit were put out each morning on our floor around 7am which was very nice and convenient. I have stayed in many hotels in the area and this one is right up there in terms of location and value.

The hotel is beautiful, well-situated and the service is great. The offered pastries in the morning and coffee are nice, but the pastries are meh. The food and drinks at the Pavilion Bar are among the worst I’ve ever had. The salsa consisted of tomato sauce poured out of a can with some chopped tomatoes thrown in. A standard mojito was not able to be drank, at all. The pool is only good if you can ingest the food and drink offered, and if you have anything over a fast food-level of palate, you won’t be able to.

I was very disappointed with my experience at this hotel. For almost $500/night you would reasonably expect to have a window. The room was very dark and gloomy. When I asked to switch rooms, I was told the there was nothing they could do. They made no effort at all to remedy the situation. There are plenty of other beautiful hotels in the area. This one wasn’t worth the price.
