I would give 4 over all ...but... I'll start with the good..location,location, location..perfect! So easy to walk anywhere. Restaurants start 1 block away mainly on East Bay at 2 blocks away. King street is for clothing and is easy access as well. The waterfront is minutes too. The cottage is very quaint. Bedroom is upstairs...nice size king bed.VERY narrow winding stairway! Love the fireplace. Kitchen was sufficient. An old '50s one piece unit. Modern heating & air units both up & down. Now for the not so good...could be better. I'm surprised there weren't ants...sugar bowl with dried clumped sugar. The creamer in Frig was half used .. thick & curdelled! Dishes hog-podge. Silverware of all styles. It wasn't a big deal...but considering what we paid ... Just needs more attention to detail. There was a family that decided to be outside our window with a pinata! Also sat at the bench at OUR window and the man talked load. Now if that were the ONLY area they could be....maybe I would have been ok...but there were other areas to hang out. They knew we were inside because I opened the door...gave him the stink eye! We were trying to rest. It would be like you are staying in a very nice hotel and a group of people were outside your door having a party! Not acceptable. That is why only a 3 star.

The location was outstanding. The owners were welcoming, cars parked in tandem no problem. The bedroom had a beautiful king sized bed and monogrammed bed linen. The owner kindly offered me the use of laundry facilities of the 2 bed cottage when it was empty and went out of her way to change the welcoming bottle of wine from white to red for us. A tea cake was in the fridge too.The patio is used as part of the walking tours her daughter offers which is why there are often "visitors" in the yard. The one bed cottage is comfy with lounge and gas fire place. However, I wish I could say the kitchen facilities were up to date. We did not use the "steel" kitchen , it showed its age. And the cutlery looked like the same. The breakfast offered was coffee, juice, fresh fruit, kellogs pre packed cereal. There was a toaster in cottage but no bread or condiments. Nice thick towels in the bathroom but only soap provided.I feel this B + B could be so much better with a few changes, not sure if the owners are at an age where they don't want to do this. This place could be perfect, but for the price of this, there are other choices offered.

If you like history & quaint? Well this is the place. We stayed in the cozy and quaint kitchen or "Cook House" cottage built in the 1800's. It was very quiet and secluded, not your average B&B. All the fix'ns for breakfast included, eggs, sausage, bread, juice, etc, but you and your partner fix for yourself when you want..... And included is a bottle of wine to enjoy at your leisure. What more can you ask for? Well, the best part,... Historic Charleston is a short walk away, restaurants and boutiques and the Market Street market...all within walking distance! Good bargain for the quaintness, history and location!

I really wanted to love this place, and I will admit that my review is more of a 2.5 than a 3.... But I just can't rate it higher. Let's start with the good. The location is outstanding. It's "south of Broad," which means you are saturated in history and amazing houses. The 2 bedroom kitchen house in which we stayed also was incredible. It's about 200 years old and, even though it housed servants for most of that time, it's authentic, real and quite charming. I loved it. Even though it is NOT the house pictures above. Now, with the ... constructive criticism, Now, I saw this place advertised as a bed and breakfast in lots of places on the web. So, when I reserved the room, I expected both a bed ... and a breakfast. Unfortunately, I reserved the room through vrbo (as opposed to the other websites I saw it), and I found out after arriving that I would not be getting the breakfast portion (or free wine) of the meal, because I reserved through vrbo. I can understand if I got a lower rate through vrbo, but that was not the excuse given. The property owner did express regret at the decision and was nice enough to give us a bottle of wine later, but it was a bad first impression. More importantly, however, was the inability to relax on the property. The furniture was very old and very uncomfortable. I actually liked the attempt for antique feel of the furniture, but it wasn't old and valuable enough to warrant the sheer lack of comfort the furniture provided. It was small, hard, creaky and completely prevented any ability to relax while in the case. The hard, lumpy beds were equally painful. I love the rustic feel of the place, but I have to have the ability to chill out on vacation. The patios and courtyard outside the houses also are quaint, cute, and could be quite relaxing. Unfortunately, the property owner was on the premises throughout the week and either she, her daughter, and/or her nanny were using the open spaces throughout the day. In the mornings, the property owner set out tableclothes, lemonade, and brochures for .... someone. We don't know. But we weren't invited to take part of whatever was going on. Again, she was nice enough to say that the patio area was "ours" but it never felt that way. This place could be amazing. And I hope the property owner (who seemed very nice) improves the experience for others after reading this review. But I spent a lot of money for my girlfriend and me to spend a week there, and I felt like we were just an afterthought to put the empty servant house to some profitable use for the owner. Unless, they upgrade the furniture (with cheap but comfy furniture) and leave the renters alone in the outdoor space, I can't recommend it against comparably priced places.

My mother and I stayed in the two bedroom house and we just loved it. We are NOT morning people, so we thoroughly enjoyed not having to be all made-up and ready for a formal breakfast each morning. We were able to keep and cook our leftovers,do a load of laundry ( no extra bag fees for us!), sit by the large gas fireplace and enjoy at glass of wine in the beautiful, garden courtyard. It was a comfortable, private, convenient stay-- just right for our needs, We also loved off-street parking ( a true luxury in Charleston).
