The house may be historical. The room and the staff were excellent. The staff could not do enough to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable. The room which was in the historic carriage house on the second floor was beautifully decorated. The bed most comfortable. Breakfast was served at our request in the courtyard. This location was great as was... More

Found it on the internet while looking for places to stay in Charleston. Initially just looking for a hotel to stay in while attending a child's weekend sports tournament in the area, but decided to go off the beaten path, and so glad we did. Actually with everything we did, staying at the John Rutledge was the most unique experience... More

Great stay at a historical landmark. Everyone was so accommodating. We stayed with our dog and she was greeted with fresh water, bowls and treats. The room was very well appointed and bright with windows. We had breakfast in the courtyard and it was lovely. You won't regret your stay here. Absolutely wonderful!

First stay in a Bed and Breakfast and wow, far exceeded my expectations. Such a historical house. The staff was very helpful, especially concierge Johnathan. Thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea and brandy service. Had a choice of where to have breakfast served--ballroom, courtyard, or in room.

We booked the John Rutledge House Inn on the recommendation of a friend who had stayed at the Inn. Overall, the Inn is an historic Charleston house owned by a signer of the Constitution. Very historic in a city of many historic structures. We stayed in a large second floor room. The room was very nice and the Inn exudes... More

The staff at the Rutledge House were very welcoming and the house is beautiful. The staff cheerfully helped us with our bags and got us settled into our room. The parking is in the back of the property but it takes a few minutes to get to is because of all the one way streets. They offered tea, lemonade and... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
