The John Rutledge House is centrally located on Broad Street, within walking distance to many attractions and restaurants, so you won’t need a car. The concierges (Jim and Margo) were available 24/7 and outstanding; they helped with securing our walking tour, places to eat, sightseeing venues , made us feel welcomed and warmly greeted us each time we came “home”! Delicious home cooked breakfasts were included and outstanding, with Maurice (so very nice) delivering them either to our room or to the ballroom. Our fireplace bedroom (room #8) up on the third floor was clean, elegant, quiet, and with a modern bathroom, made our stay so enjoyable. Lisa the innkeeper was very friendly and has done an excellent job with her team. We’re not ones to stay at inns or B & B’s but the JRH has changed our minds! Although a little pricey (we stayed Tuesday - Friday), it’s worth it and highly recommend this if you want an authentic feel of a Southern charm mansion.…
The room was most beautiful, with a canopy top for the bed a fireplace, and a very spacious room. The bathroom was ideal for two people. The staff were very attentive and helpful helping us with reservations for dinner and also transportation to the restaurant. Also other help for places in the Charleston area Margo was great!
This was one of the best experiences of a lifetime. Margo and Jim made my family feel at home with their hospitality and their eagerness to want us to enjoy Charleston like no other place to be found. I had somewhat of a hiccup while staying at the hotel and they were so kind to us and wanted me to know how much they cared by sending me flowers to say I hope I get well. I'm a man and the kind gesture of the flowers to our room made me once again understand what it means to be humble and to know that there's always someone out there that enjoys you for who you are, these two beautiful souls will always be remembered in my heart as loving people who truly care and love what they do. So in ending, if you want the best experience of your life, visit the John Rutledge House in Charleston, SC and you will not be disappointed. Also, the staff was also amazing, I cannot say enough about their hospitality and love for what they do. We will see you again soon and cannot wait for the next round of Brandy and good conversations with my friends Margo and Jim, much love! Enjoy your next trip at this beautiful establishment. Best Regards, …
Fabulous historic Bed and Breakfast in great location. Delicious breakfasts, and we loved the afternoon tea and yummy snacks. Lisa and the team were so welcoming! Especially enjoyed the front balcony. There is a small refrigerator in the room and a small grocery store down the street. Will definitely stay again!
We stayed at the John Rutledge House Inn February 16-20, 2023. What a wonderful way to experience the history, culture, and hospitality of Charleston! We are very glad we chose to stay here based on location alone. Located on Broad Street, it was convenient to everything: the waterfront, the residential district, and all the streets leading to the main sights of downtown. Also, this part of town is less crowded, less traffic, and more quiet. We stayed in room 6, the Elizabeth Grimke room, located at the top of the stairs and next to the ballroom on the 2nd floor. Walking into this room was like stepping back in time. It was beautifully decorated and featured an elegant stone fireplace with views of St John The Baptist church next door. While the room was decorated to match it’s period, the bathroom was modern and very nice. The staff were very friendly and kind and the service was amazing. We had breakfast delivered to our room each morning and it always arrived promptly and hot in a beautiful presentation. When we returned to our room each afternoon, it had been cleaned and restocked with fluffy clean towels and replenishment of bottled water in the small fridge. The afternoon tea and snacks along with evening port and brandy were very nice and elegant perks. The courtyard was a beautiful place to sit, relax, and enjoy the quiet. Our package came with reservations to the restaurant Circa 1886 and we can’t recommend that enough. That was a beautiful dining experience. We would not hesitate to stay here again when we return to Charleston and highly recommend it. Everything about this place exceeded our expectations. …
Stayed at the cottage room at this Bed and breakfast property which overall was just ok. Condition of property was worn. Beds were fine but comfortable is not the word I would use just ok. The parking lot was extra expense and, is shared by a home or building that is under major construction so there was not the charm anywhere I wished or thought I would have.
The entire staff at John Rutledge House was awesome! We had our dog, GIO, and they had treats and food bowls for him in the room! Breakfast was served in the room and was great. The room was clean and had comfort and charm.
I really cannot say enough good things! The staff is SUPERB. The room was comfortable and delightful. We didn't bother moving our car once we got to the Inn, as we could walk practically everywhere. The breakfast is excellent, and I loved the afternoon tea service (though we sadly missed it a few times because we were out enjoying the town). I would go back anytime and would 100% recommend it to anyone. Also, the add on packages are an absolute value. I have rarely found that to be true, but here it is absolutely worth it.
I love staying at the John Rutledge House. This was my second visit. The attention to detail is noted. The breakfast, teas and evening sherry is such a nice touch and the rooms, beautifully appointed! There is even a nice birthday surprise! The staff is very responsive and makes you feel you are in your own home. The concierge (s) are very engaging and really added to the overall experience.
We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. My husband and I had originally booked a neighboring bed and breakfast and had a terrible experience after the first night. We called Jim at John Rutledge Inn and he was more than accommodating. He told us to come on over, we arrived at 10am and he had us in a room in a matter of mins. The staff was amazing, nothing but smiling faces and people ready to help and make us feel welcome. The rooms were gorgeous and beds were extremely comfortable. My husband and I enjoyed evening tea and treats along with the delicious breakfasts that were included in the stay. We are more than thankful to have found this place and will definitely be back! Huge thanks to Jim for taking such excellent care of us on such short notice!
