This is a unique property in a great location with a magnificent beach. We were unlucky to have visited post Labor Day when the weather was a bit on the cool side. Certainly not the hotel's fault. However, it's important to understand that this is a beach resort. If it's not beach weather, there's just not that much to do. And the four figure daily room rate, while probably well justified in midseason, seems pretty steep if you can't spend your day on this great beach. If I return, I'll be sure to pick July or August dates and not take a chance on the shoulder season. Some suggestions: upon booking, be sure to ask about reservations for dining and activities. We were deeply disappointed that we were unable to dine at Coast, which they describe as "one of the world's best waterfront restaurants" and "a one-of-a-kind dining experience." As hotel guests, we expected that at least something (5:30 or 9:00?) might have been available at least one night. Also, ask well in advance what else fills up and needs to be reserved (Spa? Beach cabanas?). Don't pay up for a room with a terrace; they offer no privacy from your neighbors. Also, when you're (inevitably) waiting upon arrival for your room to be ready, ask to borrow a Mercedes vehicle available for test drive. We were lucky to secure an AMG S 63 coupe, which gets from 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds (or so I've read ;)). Try a private croquet lesson from national champion Stephen Morgan, even (particularly!) if you've never played before.

Perched on a hilltop in Watch Hill Rhode Island sits my favorite east coast destination. The great staff, impeccable rooms , great location and delicious food, keeps us coming back. Lately, I’ve enjoyed going to the beach at the end of the day and playing bridge on my laptop. That’s divine!

Summary: While the beach setting was excellent, the hotel is considerably over priced and not worth the cost, when compared to many other luxury properties. It did not live up to the hype. Very nice, but not world class as described and rated. The Good: -Beautiful, clean beach setting. Never felt overcrowded despite, hotel being at capacity. Lovely and friendly beach staff. -Bell and valet staff were conscientious, competent, and extremely polite. -Attentive, responsive, friendly wait staff at all the dining venues. -Beach taco/margarita shack was convenient and fun. The Bad: -Inconsistent, unresponsive, and late housekeeping staff. Several instances of not replenishing soap, water, etc. One day housekeeping was completely skipped until we complained about it, close to dinner time. A piece for the door to our terrace fell off on our first day. It was conspicuously placed against the wall, and it remained there our entire six night stay. -Culinary demonstrations were elementary and uninspiring. We went to one that was no longer than 10 minutes, and most home cooks could have done a better job. We cancelled our remaining culinary demo reservations, after that. -Activities representative/telephone concierge had little to no knowledge of local area and consistently provided incorrect information both about hotel activities and general area activities. One of several examples — When asked about things to do in Newport, she responded, “I have no idea. I don’t really like Newport.” -Disposable water bottles were not provided. Each person received a refillable bottle, but there were only two filtered water stations on the property, and some days the water had a funky odor/taste. -Poor quality hotel bikes. We took the bikes out for a ride around town, and were surprised at how unstable they were. -Room terrace not really private. There were only half walls separating adjoining terraces. One afternoon our next door neighbor was seated on her terrace, smoking a joint as we were trying to relax. Given the additional cost for a room with a terrace, we felt it wasn’t worth it. The Neutral: -Grounds and common areas were well appointed and maintained as expected. -Restaurant options were above average to good, but nothing spectacular. At a place of this purported caliber, you might expect more imagination and versatility. There were no nightly specials at any of the venues. After a few days, more variety would have been welcomed. The meal at Coast was very good, but given the cost and the Forbes five star rating, it fell short, especially when compared to other restaurants in that class. -Beds and bedding were quite comfortable, per expectations. -Good quality, easy to use shower, with decent water pressure. -Appropriate COVID-19 protocols appeared to be in place at all times.

Dear Tasteful Traveling Duo, We’re pleased that you found any of our staff members “lovely, friendly, polite, attentive and responsive.” We’re also pleased that you felt like COVID-19 protocols were in place at all times, and you found the beds comfortable. Regarding the refillable water bottles, we are eliminating single use plastics in an effort to help the environment, a direction that most guests appreciate. In addition to the three water filling stations, our valet restocks rooms with chilled sparkling and still water that you could have used as well. We are saddened to learn that some other areas of the property didn’t meet or exceed your expectations. We will share some of these items with our team in the spirit of improving in the future. Sincerely, Daniel Hostettler, President and Group Managing Director Antonia Korosec, General Manager

The facility is lovely but considering what they charge, it is the biggest rip off imaginable. The service is abominable. It took 5 attempts to reach room service, reception, valet, etc. on the phone. The room service orders were always incorrect, and the promised wait times were outrageous. To add insult over injury service was provided 30 minutes later than quoted. They overcharge (I was charged $800 for 2 massages quoted at $195 apiece). The food is very good and the wait staff is wonderful, but it takes forever to be seated and there is no communication between the outdoor and indoor restaurants. The beach service is minimal at best. We had lunch on the beach and had to dispose of our own dishes because there was no one around and the bees were terrible. There is no outdoor pool which is misleading. We were misled to believe that we had our room for 4 nights and therefore we were sent to thier sister property, The Watch Hill Inn and for $1,000 a night there is no room service at all and the valet never showed up. Horrible experience overall.

Dear Christina, We’re glad that you found Ocean House staff “wonderful” and food good, but we are sorry to learn of your frustration with in-room dining and other areas. As it relates to our restaurants, we call guests 10 days in advance of their visit to make dining reservations, which is particularly important during this time when we are spacing out tables. We’re also concerned about your surprise in your “room change” to Watch Hill Inn, for we are very diligent about our pre-arrival email communication. If you are interested, kindly email us your contact details at Communications@OceanHouseRI.com with Trip Advisor in the headline, and we can look into more details of your stay, including your Spa experience. Sincerely, Daniel Hostettler, President and Group Managing Director Antonia Korosec, General Manager

The Good - Beautiful location on the beach - Excellent dining options - Nice rooms - Impressive Public Areas The Bad and the Ugly - Comically has service issues through out - they simply don’t answer the phone and if they do don’t get anything done - Absentee manager - asked to speak to him on numerous occasions but never posted once. Does not know want to so or simply does not care at all - check in 30 minutes, multiple missed reservations, multiple missed housekeeping, never once a call back - ask for anything and the answer is always”no”! Chuck Royce did such a great job with the development, surely he can find somebody who went to Cornell hotel school to manage the place???!!!
