I've been staying at the guesthouse several times a year for many years and have always felt like I was coming home when I returned. Each of the rooms has its own unique flavor but all are cozy and provide total comfort. Each room is filled with many books and magazines on different subjects so there is never time to be bored when staying in. The proprietor is interested in providing all amenities a guest could want and each morning bakes wonderful bread or pastries along with providing other food selections to choose from and the best hot coffee. The guesthouse is centrally located and an easy to walk to the Newport Ferry and the local Jamestown stores. I've met many interesting return visitors and during the warm weather its wonderful to sit on the comfortable porch furniture and make new friends. The prices are exceptionally reasonable for this area and I have never felt the need to look for anyplace else. I always look forward to returning regardless of the season and love the feeling of coming home each time I step into the entry foyer. I recently stayed there from September 18-22 and was impressed with the cleaning procedures and the fact that rooms were left vacant for at least one to two days after every stay. I felt extremely comfortable that every precaution was being taken and it is one of the few places I do not hesitate to stay at during this Covid pandemic. I highly recommend what I consider my home away from home and favorite nearby place to escape from New York City.

I decided last minute to book a trip to Newport for Father's day weekend and found this place. We stayed in the "apartment" with our 2 girls (1 and 4yo). We had a private entrance to an upstairs single bedroom suite with kitchen. There was a walk in closet in the master bedroom which was the perfect nook to put our little one's pack n play and our toddler just slept in bed with us. Next time, I think I'll bring a small mat so she can just sleep on the floor because the bed is a queen and my toddler likes to take up half the bed. It was super clean and everything just had that high quality, solid feel. It was not dusty or cheap feeling like many other airbnbs and bed+breakfasts we've stayed in. It was one of those places that looks even better in person than in the pictures. Lisa, the inn keeper, was so welcoming and accommodating, it felt more like we were staying at a friend's home than an inn. Within a 2 min walk are also a few amazing restaurants and a small brewery. Plus, it was half the price of many other Newport inns. It was just the place we needed to recharge from the pandemic. We will definitely be coming back!

Three of us stayed with Lisa for three nights. Our rooms/bathrooms were spotless, as was the entire Guest House. We loved the comfy front porch and spent a lot of time out there, especially in the evenings. It's only a block from the water. Lisa doesn't offer a full hot breakfast, but we had enough to eat so that we didn't have to go out for breakfast. A baked good was offered each morning (blueberry muffins, corn bread, peach cobbler). There was also coffee, tea, orange juice, hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt available. Freshly baked ginger cookies in the afternoons. She even provided gluten free bread and gluten free cookies for one of us who has celiac disease. So quiet at night!! Would highly recommend!! You won't be disappointed

I was a solo female traveler looking for a place to stay that wasn't as expensive as Newport and away from the noise of touristy places. Lionel Champlin Guest House and Jamestown were perfect! I often have trouble sleeping when I travel alone, and in general, yet I slept so soundly here. I felt like I was staying at a friend's house; it was that comfortable. I stayed in the Rose Room, which is beautifully decorated. The bed was super comfy and I was able to relax easily. Lisa is the perfect host; so kind and accommodating. I really appreciated all of her suggestions of places to go, how to get there, her kindness in offering to make me food, etc. I can't imagine a better experience. I loved my time here and I hope to be back!

I feel like the luckiest person ever - as I managed to get the highly sought after tickets for the iconic Newport Folk Festival on my first try . . . but also was able to stay at this wonderful guest house.  The innkeeper, Lisa, worked miracles to make this happen and I'll be forever grateful.   Her home truly feels like a 2nd home - each room is so tastefully decorated with lots of books to browse through, as well as cozy chairs in which to read them with my favorite being on her wonderful front porch.  Coffee, teas and cocoas were available 24/7 and she often had cookies or brownies along with fresh fruit available for snacks throughout the day.  She baked something fresh and different for breakfast on each of the 6 days I stayed there, and also offered yummy organic granolas, yougurts, fresh fruit (melons, pineapple, strawberries) and hard boiled eggs to round out the breakfast offerings.  She also thoughtfully offers a variety of milks and creamers for the coffees and teas.  One other guest even whipped up a mean chai latte, as they weren't a coffee drinker.  I appreciated her environmental thoughtfulness of not using disposables and the cloth napkins, dishwares & breakfast trays really enhanced the feeling of being at home.  She also has a variety of beach chairs, umbrellas, sun screens, insect repellents, etc. that can be borrowed for use throughout your stay.  I will certainly be trying each year for future Folk Fest tickets, and hope that I will also be lucky enough to return to Lionel Champlin Guest House.

The Lionel Champlin Guest House is a true gem. Lisa (the owner) is so lovely. She puts so much care and detail into her beautiful home and ensures the ultimate comfort and hospitality for her guests.
Our family enjoyed the gorgeous apartment upstairs. There was more than enough room for all four of us in this beautifully renovated, clean, comfortable apartment with a full kitchen and views of the harbor!!! She even had fluffy bath towels for us.
She took time with us to show us around the home and there was a lot! Fresh coffee and pastry in the morning. There was a kitchen with access to the fridge and snacks. The front porch is the perfect place to catch an evening breeze and stretch out. There are even maps in the hallways that show were all her guests were from.
It is so nice to have found the Lionel Champlin Guest House and to meet Lisa. She truly cares about each of her guests and provides the most wonderful experience. I cannot recommend this beautiful B&B enough! Go and stay, you will LOVE it!

We came to Rhode Island all the way from Singapore and due to unforeseen circumstances, we ended up being extremely tight on schedule for a wedding that we were supposed to attend.

Lisa was super helpful and went above and beyond to accommodate us. It was 4 July and even though her guesthouse was fully booked, she still tried everything to help us out. Without her great hospitality, our trip would definitely not have been so successful.

The room is very well decorated and maintained. It’s conveniently located in this beautiful city and I highly recommend to visit her place if you planned a stay. Everything was very clean and comfortable. The room was really big and we had plenty of space for our luggage. Thanks for the wonderful trip, Lisa!

Just back from a lovely weekend at the LCGH in Jamestown. The location is terrific--a few short blocks from town. Quick drive to Newport and surrounding sites. But after the bustle of Newport, you'll be glad to return to the comfy peace of this inn. Lisa, the innkeeper, was so helpful and accommodating, seeing to every detail down to the comfy bath towels. Will definitely be back & I've already told several friends they need to stay here.

Hi Sue, We do not block rooms without a commitment to the reservation. As a small property with a total of 5 rooms and an apartment that sleeps up to 6 people, we cannot block rooms without an expectation that they will be used. We have 2-night minimums on weekends (any reservation that includes a Friday or Saturday night) April through October. We allow single night reservations on Sunday through Thursday nights, unless it's a holiday weekend so with your friend having a Sunday wedding, It's possible to book just Sunday night. the single night rate of any of our rooms is $20 higher than the multi night rate. Please call or request your reservation through our website if/when you're ready to make a reservation. Rusty and Lisa Sallee

Are there cottages to rent
Newport, Rhode Island245 contributions130 helpful votes
I'm sorry we do not have any cottages or separate buildings to rent. We have an apartment with private access, suitable for families up to 6 people total but it is still part of our guest house.
