The location was a convenient walk or bike ride to the South Side of Pittsburgh home to many bars, restaurants, venues and attractions; and was just a short trip to downtown or the North Shore. The hotel was unique and well decorated with art and found objects reflecting the culture of Pittsburgh and the historical character of the building. It felt welcoming and added to the overall experience of my trip. The room was cozy and had everything I needed for a several night stay. The kitchen was always stocked with fresh ground coffee from La Prima (another favorite local coffee spot) snacks and treats for a morning bite. The staff was accessible during the day and I had no issues during my stay. I was a late arrival and was able to find my way without much issue. A big thank you to Paul, MB and Levi!…
My 1st time staying at a B & B. when we arrived after hours and went in, we smelled the coffee and it felt like being home. After getting to the room and finding that there was no TV I was like no way. But it turned out to be the best thing because we went downstairs in the common area and met some great people and spent time with the owners Paul & Mary Beth. They are both wonderful and love to spend time with their guest. The building is awesome with its history of the area. They have done a great job with this place, and it can only get better. Did I mention the coffee? Sooooo Good!!!! I highly recommend this place over any hotel in Pittsburg.
Where to begin……First off, why would anyone stay at some hotel chain, when they could stay at a beautiful historic hotel with incredible hosts, great location, and wonderful guests? I have only high marks for Paul and Mary Beth who have restored this 1884 building with so much thoughtfulness. We had a room with a queen bed that was so comfortable, and a spotless bathroom across the hall. We enjoyed the great room with comfy chairs and lots of charm! Breakfast was perfect for us - open the fridge and make what you want for breakfast….we had eggs, bagels, and yogurt, and the best coffee- Prima coffee. Most of the guest were people passing through before or after their journey biking the Great Allegheny Passage. Conversation was lively as we swapped stories and got lots of “beta”. Finally, there is a dedicated garage to securely park your bike for the night and there are tools & supplies for any needed repairs. I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else when I come to Pittsburgh again, and I will come again!…
Stayed here for two nights while in town for a hockey and football game. We thoroughly enjoyed the stay. It’s a very quaint hotel with a lot of charm and different than a typical hotel room. The location is great on the south side of town with many restaurants nearby and most parts of the city within a 20-25 minute walk. The owners were very friendly and gave us lots of useful tips about the area.
My husband & I and 4 friends stayed here for 3 nights after biking the GAP trail. Very clean, grand yet homey, historic, bike friendly. The owners are friendly and have lots of advice about seeing Pittsburgh. The great room is a perfect place to spend an hour both in the morning over delicious coffee & continental breakfast and then again in the evening before retiring.
Phenomenal place to stay! I spent two days here while cycling through Pittsburgh and didn’t really want to leave. The owners, Mary Beth and Paul are very welcoming and have a wealth of information to share about the area. The Great Room is a perfect place to relax with breakfast or just coffee. The slippers they provide were nice and comfy. Highly recommend staying here. If I’m back in Pittsburgh I know where I’m staying.
My daughter and I stayed in the Bunker Room. Not only was the price fantastic for four nights, our stay was incredibly comfortable and, well, just a joy. We had privacy if we so chose, and convivial conversation when wanted. The beds were very comfortable, the room just big enough (think fancy hostel-sized), the central air clear and comforting, especially given Pittsburgh summer! The showers are top of the line, and each room gets their own bathroom. Ours was incredible spacious - two showers, two sinks. There was plenty of food for breakfast on the house - my daughter whipped us up a large bunch of eggs and pancakes. Coffee is free flowing, fresh, and superb! A local brew. Within a short walk there's a brew pub, a fantastic and magical riverside trail, the Sahside and all its excitements. On the next to last day, we thrift shopped at Salvation Army three blocks away. Travel time to the east end, where we were visiting my mom, was 13 minutes via the parkway!! Faster than our usual East Lib Hotel-->Wilkinsburg clogged up route. We took a trip to the Point and had a lovely morning. We easily could have walked. Such a delight to see my hometown so up close, when I've lived in the suburbs for all my time there. Massive windows with a gorgeous up close view of our shining city. And, for anyone who has ever rehabbed a historic home, you will be absolutely thrilled to notice all the work and details that went into restoring this museum of historic architecture. Wainscoting? Check. Super high ceilings? Brass fixtures? Enormous windows? Check. They even scraped all the paint off of the gorgeous black soapstone shower stalls. A step back into time! Yet, it's incredibly clean. It's been my absolute favorite place we have stayed, and I've done Airbnb, hotels, Vrbo, etc... This place is a gem and the owners are fantastic. Never had trouble parking at any time of day. We will be back 1000X!…
Great location near the bike trail. Clean and comfortable with shops and restaurants within walking distance. Secure bike storage in the building. Small frig in the room but kitchen available if cooking is your thing. Highly recommended.
The Traveler's Rest was perfect place for my small group to stay the evening before our GAP/C&O Trail ride. Check-in/-out was a breeze, and the accommodations were exactly what we needed. There's plenty of bike storage, an assortment of tools and pumps, and there's a pizza/hoagie place around the corner if you get in before 10 pm. The decor is pretty cool, and capitalizes on the bicycle theme.
I really like staying at the Traveler's Rest. This hotel has a high quality decor. It is well appointed, with nice furniture, wood paneled rooms, high ceilings, and tall gracious windows. The Traveler's Rest is charming in a modernized yet olde-timey way. The pleasant kitchen area offered a cook-yourself breakfast of fresh fruit, delicious coffee, pancake mix, yogurt, and eggs, The hostess gave me a warm and gracious welcome and pointed out highlights for cyclists, things to see, showed me the place to store my bicycle which had easy access to street, an air pump and tools for minor repairs. Together with the host, we had a few nice converations where they went out of their way to make me comfortable at the hotel and to show me what to do and see in Pittsburgh. The whole hotel was very clean. I stayed in the room with bunk beds. The separate bathroom on lower floor had nice soaps, shampoos, lotions, was clean, had hot water. The bed had a high-quality and very comfortable mattress. It was very quiet and I slept well. As a cyclist, I felt so welcome at the Traveler's Rest that I forgot how unusual it is to be this well treated at a hotel. The hotel is set-up perfectly for bicycle tourism and the hostess and host completely understand bicycling and things that are of concern to bicycle tourists. My only criticism is that Traveler's Rest does not offer any rooms on a shared basis, as a hostel. This requires solo travelers to occupy an entire room, which could be pricey for one person. When you make your reservation, you might want to mention you interest in hostelling. However, if you are traveling with another person to share costs or if price does not matter (the price is certainly worth the good quality), Traveler's Rest is THE place to stay in Pittsburgh. Also, I was really delighted by my half-day of sightseeing in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is actually very interesting; it has an unusual and pleasing atmoshere. It is Northern, yet it is neither coastal nor Midwestern. It is worth staying at the Traveler's Rest at the beginning or end of your Great Alleghany Passage bicycle tour just to visit Pittsburgh. Traveler's Rest is really a gold mine. You will feel lucky if you can fit it into your itinerary.…
