Built in 1888 as a Benedictine monastery (with extensive renovations completed in May 2023), the Priory Hotel is now an elegant 42 room boutique hotel combining late 19th century historic ambiance, with a plethora of modern amenities. Located on Pittsburgh's historic North Shore, the Priory Hotel is just across the Allegheny River from downtown and within easy walking distance of many Pittsburgh attractions, including the Andy Warhol Museum, National Aviary, PNC Park and Heinz Field. The hotel was renovated in 2023, with new furnishings and amenities. The Priory Hotel offers a complimentary grab and go breakfast every morning, complimentary parking, and weekend shuttle service to downtown and North Shore locations. Don't feel like leaving the property? Our Monks' Bar (with 14 seats, the smallest bar in Pennsylvania) is open daily for beverage and light fare food. Enjoy a cool drink in our verdant garden courtyard, or in colder months cozy up to the fire in our adjacent sitting room.

The Priory Hotel garners high praise for its comfortable accommodations, including a quality breakfast and a charming courtyard. The staff's friendliness and helpful shuttle service are often highlighted by guests, contributing to the hotel's overall inviting atmosphere. Many guests commend the spotless rooms and historic elegance, reinforcing the hotel's reputation for cleanliness and attention to detail.
While the hotel's value is recognized for its reasonable rates and package extras, some guests note the bar's prices as a drawback. The rooms are lauded for modern amenities and tasteful decor, though a few mention the bathrooms are on the smaller side.

Detailed Reviews
*This is not a paid advertisement, though I wish it was, I’ve been trying to sell my writing for years*
What do you get when you combine a former Benedictine monastery with modern style rooms, an intimate courtyard and the smallest bar in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania? An environment that is condensed Chicken Soup for the Soul. I firmly believe that this hotel finds you. I have stayed there multiple times since 2015 and use it as a reason to find a reason to stay in Pittsburgh. Not only is it easy to access from the highway, by letting you avoid all of the bridge and tunnel traffic going into the city, but is also home to some of the best hospitality specialists I’ve encountered. The Priory is like staying at an amazing Bed and Breakfast in something like a mansion.
When I give this place 5 stars I want to give it ten! Everything is great. Everything. From the front desk to housekeeping and from the shuttle drivers to bar tenders. Bar tenders sounds like an insult, cocktail crafters would be more apt. Every drink I’ve had at The Monk’s Bar comes theatrically and well composed. Micheal is a genius at his crafts, putting together drinks like the Petrichor that will invoke nostalgia of a sunny but damp spring day. But he being a man of many hats is also an amazing all of the above. If you’re lucky enough to encounter him there, mention my name, he might just give you a free conversation.
I haven’t even gotten to the water pressure or the croissant sandwich’s you can get, for free, for breakfast. I mean, the water pressure is always there and as a man that has stayed in plenty of hotels trying to wash a wing night’s worth of mistakes out of my beard I can tell you that most of them suck. Not here. Not The Priory. Their showers are like a pressure washer compared to ones I have used in more “luxurious” offerings. And that leads me to my final point, the croissant sandwich’s. Ham and cheese on a fresh baked croissant from a local bakery. It makes the morning feel a little bit easier. Like a nice cup of Folgers in 1997. Nostalgia. That’s what The Priory invokes. Someplace warm, someplace safe. It reminds me that sometimes wing night is a good idea on the road.

We traveled to Pittsburgh for three days to see the city for the first time and to tour a pair of colleges with our older son. The four of us decided to stay in The Priory because of its history and location near key points of interest including PNC Park and the Heinz Center. It’s in the Deutschtown neighborhood amid blocks of lovingly restored federal-style houses. Within a short walk are several restaurants offering a range of cuisines, including a South Asian place called Subba that we tried. At the hotel, the rooms we were assigned had recently been refurbished and outfitted with comfortable linens and bedding. We all slept exceptionally well. The Priory’s history is on display as you walk through the halls where Benedictine monks once strolled. It’s hotel bar off the reception area is called the Monk’s Bar, and we enjoyed Happy Hour visits there during our stay. The place takes pride in well-mixed cocktails, ranging from classics like a sublime version of the Old Fashioned to a new one for me called the Petrichor featuring elderflower liqueur. True to River City’s reputation as a welcoming place, the staff at the hotel were warm, receptive and good humored, each going the extra length to make us and other guests feel at home. We’re keen on making a return trip to Pittsburgh at some point, maybe for a Pirates game, and we would definitely stay at the Priory again.

A friend and I stayed here for two nights, and we both loved it. We booked two single rooms, and it was really nice to have the option of a smaller, single bed room, which reduced the price of the trip but still gave us a comfortable base. The rooms are very clean, nicely decorated, bathrooms are spotless and the shower is nice. All the staff we met were great: attentive, efficient and friendly. Michael the bartender makes a great cocktail! I would stay here again and would definitely recommend it.

We just returned from two nights staying, along with another couple, at the Priory Hotel. We had a wonderful experience from the moment we entered and were greeted by Michael at the front desk. He clearly loves his job and enjoys sharing the history of this interesting historic hotel. We were also impressed by the rest of the staff who went out of their way to be helpful.
The note is only open a few days a week as they are renovating the place.. It will be even better once the renovations are complete as I admit it can benefit from some refreshing and updating. however it was still a great choice and I would return in a minute. I might also add that the hotel is in an unusual location - altho close to many restaurants and regentrification, it is across from a housing project. My husband loves to walk and he asked the man at the desk about going out for a walk around 10 pm He was advised against it. However he had no trouble either morning when he walked the neighborhood.
Again, a very positive experience. Try it!

Outstanding boutique hotel filled with historic charm! We had an excellent stay and the staff took great care of us, including during a very late check in with two tired kids. The location is perfect, very close access to a number of points of interest in and around the city. The room was perfect, nice soft beds and pillows, everything clean and tidy. We particularly appreciated the efficient and economical breakfast option, as well as the intimate bar located just off the lobby. The hotel and adjacent church are excellently maintained and rich with history, and there is more than ample parking. Skip the small chain motels and corporate hotels lacking in character and instead treat yourself to a lovely family run boutique experience! Perfect for families and business travelers alike.
Highly recommended!

This was the perfect place to stay in Pittsburgh! My husband and I love history and I could not have been happier to spend our honeymoon staying in such an elegant, historic place. We were within walking distance of the National Aviary, Allegheny Commons Park, the beautiful Mexican War Streets, Point State Park, and many other spots downtown.
What stuck with me the most is that the staff was MORE than accommodating: we chatted over breakfast with a member of the kitchen staff, and when she found out that our flight required us to leave at 4 am the next morning, she promised to have a breakfast packed for us. We quietly sneaked down to the lobby the next morning to find scones and fruit wrapped up for us and two coffees. I could not believe how sweet that was. Thank you, Priory Hotel, for a wonderful stay, and we look forward to many more in the future!

We went to a family wedding in Pittsburgh and stayed at the beautiful Priory Hotel for the night and reception. Early in the evening, my husband was rushed to the ER, admitted and treated at the local hospital for 9 days. As I asked for flexibility and unusual questions, they all helped and supported my needs. The management even sent flowers to my room to show their genuine care and support! The morning breakfasts were gourmet croissant sandwich, gourmet large muffin, fruit, cheese and yogurt & juices! I highly recommend the Priory Hotel and their outstanding staff!

Hubby and I stopped overnight to catch a Pirates game and stayed at the Priory. The renovations were nicely done and original details were retained (the door hinges!!). The mattresses were a bit firm, room was spotless, and the area was quiet. We had our breakfast on the outdoor courtyard - such a beautifully done area! The whole place is elegantly done and I can’t wait to stay here again!
On a side note, as others stated, the outlying area is a bit dicey but we never felt fearful. Oh and there’s free parking! Hard to find that in the ‘Burg!

My husband and I stay there at least once a year whenever we pass through Pittsburgh. It's beautiful. The staff are beyond helpful and courteous! The tiny bar is quaint. Breakfast is above and beyond. A gentleman is available most all day and well into the evening to shuttle you to our from restaurants or museums or any place!

We were very impressed by everyone on the staff -- very helpful and always actively interested in making our stay comfortable and pleasant. The rooms are quite comfortable and one of the best ways to start your day is breakfast al fresco in the refectory courtyard. Location is near downtown, near PNC Park, with easy access by car to all the Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Easy place to want to visit again.

I believe it is 18...please call the front desk & they would be happy to answer your questions.
We just stayed at the Priory last week and the shuttle driver was able to pick us up from somewhere. However, he was already booked for the hour we needed driven to the event so we had to take a Lyft. But the answer is yes so long as somebody else doesn't get to him first. It's first come first serve and you cannot put the request in a day in advance. I tried. But ten to one, there's others going to the game, too, so it would probably all work out.
Hi Mark,
