The Big Creek Lodge was established in 1985, in the heart of the Chilcotin Country, a remote region in British Columbia, Canada. Under new management since 2019, Cindy & Tino are excited to share an authentic Wild West experience with new and familiar faces! The lodge is located approx. 2-hrs drive from Williams Lake Airport. Transfer is available – no rental car needed! We offer a full program of activities, including trail riding, cattle work, cattle drives, and round-ups, plus excellent fishing, wilderness hiking, lariat throwing and much more. When going for a trailride, we will ensure the “best fit”! All of the rooms and cabins at Big Creek Lodge have earned a Canada Selected “Four Star” Rating. The accommodation is in comfortable lodge rooms or private cabins, all with floor heating, hair dryer, private facilities and some with balcony/terrace. Please be advised that the management of the ranch has zero understanding of basic safety protocols in bear country. They are very pleasant and the lodging and food are great. That being said, my friend and I went there, went riding and were charged by a grizzly bear. That in and of itself is just a risk one takes in the wilderness. But please know that safety was not remotely attended to at this ranch. They do not seem to understand (there are no bears in Germany) the first rules of meeting a grizzly. They had a satellite phone that was not charged and no one to answer the phone at the ranch, they had their 'guide' moving away from the bear and leaving a guest to ride closest to the bear, they had a guest injured in the incident and have not followed up with any concern, they allowed the uninjured guest to look after the horses after the ride so that the "guide" could express her fears to the manager, the "guide" (17 years old from Australia - no bears - and stated by her - zero training in preparation for meeting bears) was apparently carrying bear spray but didn't know how to use it and forgot to get it out until quite a bit later. After my suggesting that they set up a protocol for safety, they have responded to me that I signed a waiver. Please find another ranch who have safety protocols in place.

Response from Cindy a, Manager at Big Creek Lodge - Guest Ranch
Responded Nov 27, 2019
We, the lodge management, have long thought about your review and whether or not we should respond to it. Your warning – either money back or a bad Tripadvisor review – was well received before Nov. 6th. We hereby make a clear statement and would like to encourage other accommodations in this way, not to engage in such extortion. There are no underage wranglers at our ranch. Our wranglers know how to behave in the case of a bear sighting. The almost nineteen-year-old wrangler for your trail riding tour had many bear sightings with our guests during this season. As in your case, there was no direct contact with a bear. Yes, our ranch is in Canada. And like everywhere else in Canada, there are bears that occasionally appear while being on horseback. We can not influence this. Not even from a distance. Each guest receives a briefing on how to behave in case of a bear sighting, is well informed about the possible danger and, yes, signs a waiver. Also, every one of our wranglers knows how to handle bear spray. We have clearly made our statement regarding this unfortunate incident in numerous personal emails to you before this review and be assured: we take it very seriously. We want to make clear again: We are very sorry that your friend fell off the horse and that this had a negative impact on the otherwise so positive ranch experience here with us in Big Creek. But please understand, this cannot be a reason to get an entire vacation for free.

At the end of a long dirt road, coming from Williams Lake, we found pure nature, lovely hosts and a many happy animals. After a warm and open welcome, we spent three days at Big Creek Lodge and had a wonderful time with our hosts Shona and Karl. What is definitely outstanding compared most other Loges is the passion and level of knowledge Shona puts into their horses. She really knows a lot and is loves her animals, which all have their own personalities. We enjoyed some horseback rides or course and got some training sessions as well. Everything was well planned and in best conditions. We booked the cozy lodge which is a little log house with a nice view to a little river. Hummingbirds on the terrace are one of many things which made us relax, so we could disconnect from day to day stress and enjoy nature, silence and a bit of pure Canada. We got served three meals a day which all tasted very good without any exception. Our accommodation was comfortable and private. In fact, we enjoyed our stay here which was one of many within one month so much, that we now have a large photography of this area we made ourself as eye catcher in our main living room, to make us remember the wonderful time we had in Canada and espeically at the Big Cree Lodge. My wife and I definitely plan for a further stay whenever we're back in west Canada. It's definitely worth the time of traveling from Vancouver. We hope Shona, Karl and the team have a great time during the winter season and many nice guest.

Spent a week at Big Creek as part of a long-standing ambition to get out on a (real) ranch and see BC at its best; as it was the very start of the season and with Shona, Karl and team fairly newly in place I was very lucky to have the place much to myself as a guest - and all their help and focus as a result. Totally love the feel of the place and staying in one of the Ranchhouse rooms means you really feel like one of the family; roomy bedroom with sofa if you want private space, opens out onto a deck with a view of the Creek, own bathroom, and main guest areas with shared meals (also awesome, thanks Bryher) around the big table and separate lounge and open fire. We brought in the horses and tacked up each day, explored a different trail and took in the scenery and wildlife. I'm not an experienced rider (it's been years) but I felt very confident after our intial few days with Shona and team guidance. Soon got out there and clocked up a number of trips - topped off by an overnight at the cabin. This was part of a real one-off trip for me, but I felt so at home here and it really was the highlight. Did not disappoint. Thanks to all the team and I wish you many more happy trails.

We came with a large group (11 guys) and Shona and Karl couldn't have been more welcoming. We had 3 square meals made for us every day, all of which were delicious and were also given plenty of space to do our own thing when we wanted to. We went out of the horses yesterday and considering that the majority of our group had never ridden before, it couldn't have gone better. There were no issues (some of the horses have their own characters, but you just need to be aware of them as individuals and not just a horse) and Shona was really patient and attentive with the whole group, plus they clearly really care about their animals. Everyone said that they would love to come again given the chance. Couldn't recommend it enough. **Please note, Shona and Karl only took over the ranch in the last year, so any reviews that pre-date this should not be taken in to consideration**

Shona and Karl, the new managers (it also has new owners), made our time at Big Creek Lodge an absolutely lovely experience, as did Steff the summer helper. We were warmly welcomed and made to feel a "part of" during our stay. We went mainly for the horse riding and were not disappointed; Shona is an experienced horse woman, the horses are well-trained and well looked after. Briar, the chef, prepared nutritious and tasty meals (and took care with any allergies/intolerances to food). The lodge is comfortable with the location being beautiful and relaxing overlooking Big Creek itself. If you are looking for the real Cariboo experience, look no further. Thank you, Shona and Karl, for revitalizing Big Creek Lodge and making our stay a memorable one.
