Gram Gram's Place is just a short coast down the hill from the GAP. A very convenient location at the end of a long ride. Better yet, it is a very short uphill to the start of the next day's ride! The B&B owner is not on premises but all the arrangements for entry and payment are made online and by phone once you arrive. (Very Easy.) There is locked bicycle storage in the house. We were there mid-week and were the only occupants. The accommodations are quaint and clean. The kitchen is self-serv and breakfast is adequate for a quick charge before hitting the road. There is even a small bicycle shop set up in the common room of the house. (This could be important) Meyersdale is an interesting town. Trains run through the town VERY frequently and Gram Gram's is located so as to provide a up close and personal view. (Don't worry, industrial strength ear plugs are provided at the front table in the living room.) The town seems to the take Monday and Tuesday off as restaurants within walking distance and away from the highway are closed. Gram Gram's has an emergency stash of reconstituted foods, but video store down the street doubles as a pretty good pizzeria.

I stayed here on my second night while riding the GAP. It was after 60 miles of uphill (gentle but continuous). Meyersdale is a pretty little town with unfortunately loud trains that come through fairly often. Gram Gram's was a comfortable place and I was happy it was close to the trail. That meant walking down into town for dinner and back up afterwards, but it also meant that I didn't have to push my bike very far to get rolling the next day. The breakfast was continental and fine, with plentiful cereal and fruit, just what I wanted before riding 90 miles to get to Hancock. Meyersdale is the maple syrup capital of Pennsylvania, so be sure to pick some up while you're there.

While cycling the GAP last summer, we vowed to return in winter for some cross-country skiing and chose to stay at Gram Gram’s for three nights in February. We thought at first we would ski the GAP trail, however conditions weren’t right so we drove to Laurel Ridge State Park (about 20 miles away) and found some of the best X-C trails, tracked and groomed, we’ve ever seen. Conditions there were near perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed two days on the trails there. Now for the lodging, Gram Gram’s is a very clean and cozy place, having been completely rehabbed a few years ago. We stayed on the second floor in the Cynthia Room with an adjacent private bathroom and found everything up to standards. The queen bed was very comfortable and we both agreed it was about the best we’ve had anywhere. Others have noted the train noise at night which we don’t find too troubling. The owners provide earplugs free of charge. The steam heating system in the house does produce a periodic staccato counterpoint, so the second night we turned the heat way down to limit the noise, as no one else was staying there. Of course, this would not be an issue during the warm months. The owners provide a decent selection of breakfast items for guests on a self-serve basis. The kitchen is brand new and well-equipped with a large refrigerator, range, microwave oven and a laundry. The owners also stock some common bicycle parts and supplies for sale. Access to the GAP trail is literally a stone’s throw from the front porch. We definitely would stay at Gram Gram’s Place again.

We spent three nights on GAP riding from Cumberland to Pittsburg. Our stay in Meyersdale was the best not withstanding the train noise. With regard to the negative review citing train noise: Meyersdale is a small town. A busy rail line goes through the middle of town. There is no place in town to stay where you will not hear trains during the night. Gram Gram's place has a number of features that will appeal to the cyclist and hiker. One is the availability of a washer and dryer ($3). Also, bike tubes and commonly needed parts are available in the common room (various prices on the honor system). There is locked indoor bike storage. In all this is a clean, comfortable, thoughtfully and efficiently organized B&B. Three bedrooms: a double with en suite bath downstairs, and two spacious rooms with king beds upstairs. The upstairs rooms have separate baths adjacent to but not connected to the bedroom. Passage into the upstairs hall for about three steps is required to reach the bath but two comfortable terry cloth robes are thoughtfully provided in each bedroom. Self serve kitchen for breakfast is convenient as one can have a cup of coffee, ice for a beverage, or a quick snack any time of day or night. All together a very comfortable and welcoming place very convenient to the GAP trail.
