We had 4 families, including 7 kids ranging in age from 6 to 15, parents and grandparents. Newhart's Civil War Farm was absolutely perfect. We took both buildings (main house and "barn"). We cooked breakfasts and one dinner en masse in the big house, had a great cookout dinner in the barn's picnic area, enjoyed the facilities: all the kids could sit together, leaving the adults to sit nearby at a "grown up table," and the grounds gave us the ability to let the kids go outside and play, leaving the adults to - well - enjoy being together as adults and not just parents. We were there for three nights and everyone had a blast. Both places are beautifully furnished. The kitchens have everything you could want. There's plenty of hot water (and every bedroom is en suite). Bedrooms were quiet and comfortable (and we have some very noisy grandkids). Tom and Carol, our hosts, were as helpful as can be. The entire experience made this one of our best annual get togethers. One warning - there are stairs all over the place. I was just recovering from a broken foot, so I was more conscious of them. If you have mobility problems, you may have a problem.

The first thing my three sons said upon entering the refurbished barn we would be staying in at the Ironhorse Inn, "Mom, this is so cool--the game room is nicer than our house!" That ego-deflating (to me) comment aside, you will definitely enjoy your stay here. Our family rented the barn (there is also a larger house for rent on a separate part of the property) and it was truly a great place to stay. All the comforts of home: huge kitchen, bedrooms, baths, wrap-around back deck, and a game room on the lower level with pool, air hockey, and big screen t.v. Outdoors, the landscaping is beautiful; the place is designed to host weddings/reunions with a large grape arbor, flower gardens, waterfall, and in-ground pool. The farm itself has a unique connection to the battle of Gettysburg, and its owners Tom and Carol are very gracious hosts who have a lot of knowledge of local history. I can't say enough good things about our stay here--it was the highlight of a week-long trip to the Eastern U.S. and I would stay here again in a heartbeat. A definite must if you are looking for peace and quiet after a day of touring the battlefields and town. And if you are a pretzel fan, Snyder's of Hanover is a local business:)

I traveled with my elderly grandparents to Gettysburg for my grandfather's 80th birthday. We had an incredible time, and Newhart's inn was an incredible place to stay. I was looking for a home/B&B rental which could accomodate an elderly couple. Newhart's barn has two full bedrooms and bathrooms on the main floor, so my grandparents did not have to walk up and down stairs. Tom and Carol were very kind and always available to answer questions and concerns.

My husband and I traveled to the Gettyburg area for Rememberence Day weekend. We are regulars at Gettysburg and have stayed in many B&B's in the area. We traveled with friends and their children and stayed at Newhart's Inn for the first time. We had a wonderful stay at the inn. The kids loved the grounds and especially the cows and the firetruck. The houses are decorated beautifully and have that "at home" feel. The Newharts made us feel very welcome and cooked a wonderful breakfast each morning. We would highly recommend this inn to anyone wanting a quiet Bed & Breakfast within a short drive to the Gettysburg area. We will be making another trip to the inn again this fall.

Newhart's Iron Horse Inn is in a beautiful, quiet area just a few miles outside of Gettysburg. It is very close to the new Visitor's Center and Museum at the Gettysburg Battle Field. If you would like to tour the battle fields and the town, then retreat from all the traffic and noise to a relaxing bed & breakfast in the country side, then Newhart's is for you. The "barn" is beautifully restored, by the owners Tom & Carol, and very well appointed. Our son's family was with us and we each had a master suite. We also had a 1/2 bath, a very large living room with fireplace, a large dining room and large kitchen and dining area. A full breakfast is served on your first day and continental breakfast the rest of the time. The accommodations are very clean and modern but decorated with many period antiques. Across the back of the "barn" is a very large deck for relaxing or eating or enjoying the scenery. Downstairs is a game room which may also be rented. We had our son's family with us, which included our 2 grandsons, 11 & 3, and we all loved staying at the "farm". There is a great pool (the kids loved that); grape arbors surrounding a hidden patio & beautiful flower gardens; picnic and many different sitting & relaxing areas near a waterfall and pond, a gazebo, and an actual big red caboose, which is currently being carefully restored. Tom will take you on a tour of the area in his golf cart. Or he'll show you his fire truck. They have an antique shop to browse through. They have a few cats, dogs, & cattle to visit and many acres to roam and explore. If you have kids, it's a safe place for them to play and have a good time. We were given a complimentary bottle of wine to enjoy and homemade jelly and lots of fresh fruit for breakfast. Carol makes the jelly herself and cans peaches, which were delicious. They are a delightful couple and wonderful to sit and talk with about the farm and surrounding area. They have another big stone house which they lovingly restored and also use as a bed & breakfast. If you want a relaxing hide-away, this would be a great place to lounge and unwind! We are hoping to return again very soon.
