Travelers' Choice
Monkey Island Estate lies on a picturesque island in the River Thames in the historic village of Bray, Berkshire. The island has a rich history centuries old, and has been the haunt of monarchs, aristocrats and artists, along with writers, famous performers and Berkshire locals and now is home to one of the finest hotels in Bray. The two grade I listed heritage pavilions which form the property were originally commissioned as a fishing retreat in 1723 by the third Duke of Marlborough. These have been completely restored and renovated, with beautifully landscaped gardens and picturesque views of the River Thames. Set across seven acres, Monkey Island Estate features 27 exquisite guestrooms and three sumptuous suites, designed by the award-winning New York-based Champalimaud Design. The furnishings juxtapose timeless glamour and traditional features with a modern, countryside style, creating a unique blend of past and present.

Arrived on Saturday to celebrate our Anniversary we get a bit frustrated about reception waiting & restaurant reservation. Everything was sorted out efficiently by Fontina who was always present to make sure we were happy and relaxed. Thank you for making our anniversary so special.

Highs are the picturesque setting (river view from bedrooms), calm environment, lovely room (although small) and bathroom, housekeeping staff, and thank you for all the complimentary extras of which there are many. However, the restaurant food and service are just not good enough for this hotel grade. Having said that, what we paid for the room offered good value (2 nights for the price of 1), and we really enjoyed our weekend in this location. Monkey Island has the feel of a country club, not a hotel. The rooms are in a separate building to the restaurant/bar. Overall we enjoyed it, but dining 'in' once was enough.

Delightful stay at Monkey Island. Room was beautifully appointed with a balcony overlooking the river, breakfast was delicious. All staff were lovely to deal with. We enjoyed a stroll in the grounds in the sunshine and it would be lovely to visit in the summer. Delicious cocktails in the bar. It was only a quick visit but we would definitely return.

It was my wife's birthday so a night away where all we wanted to do was relax, have a few drinks, dinner and wander the grounds. What made it special was little things like champagne on arrival, signature cocktails in the bar - special ones for the non drinker too, lovely food and happy birthday written on the plate. The room (one of those overlooking river with small balcony) is small but perfectly formed. Really a lovely one night stay. Russell mixes a mean cocktail!
