Monkey Island Estate lies on a picturesque island in the River Thames in the historic village of Bray, Berkshire. The island has a rich history centuries old, and has been the haunt of monarchs, aristocrats and artists, along with writers, famous performers and Berkshire locals and now is home to one of the finest hotels in Bray. The two grade I listed heritage pavilions which form the property were originally commissioned as a fishing retreat in 1723 by the third Duke of Marlborough. These have been completely restored and renovated, with beautifully landscaped gardens and picturesque views of the River Thames. Set across seven acres, Monkey Island Estate features 27 exquisite guestrooms and three sumptuous suites, designed by the award-winning New York-based Champalimaud Design. The furnishings juxtapose timeless glamour and traditional features with a modern, countryside style, creating a unique blend of past and present.

THE MOST calming and soothing massages I’ve ever had the pleasure of receiving. Sophie is a beautiful soul, has amazing spirit, AND she’s sooooooo good at what she does. In times like now she manages to settle my anxiety, keep me centred, lifts my mood and rid all the tension I carry around in my body. She really is amazing in every sense. The massages themselves are given on a wide narrow boat docked beside the hotel. It’s such a stunning setting. I literally never want to leave and I would pay double the price any day.

We stayed at the hotel fo a weekend fo work as a small group. We had all meals at the Brasserie. The food was good and the staff attentive. The variety of food ok, but when you have 4 meals there , the choice is a bit limited, especially if some of the dishes where not available. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, however on the small side. We stayed in the main hotel, and had all of us those pretty small rooms . For the price you would expect something bigger .

This was my Christmas present so having abandoned our two teenagers we were very excited to get away. Check in was good - efficient- really pleased that our room was upgraded but we are in the middle of a pandemic. My only gripe was that they wanted to charge £50 to my husbands card - “just in case”. Not used to this approach. Now this place sells itself as a cut above so they set This was my Christmas present! This place markets itself as being a cut above the rest so they set the bar high. On arrival my husbands credit card was charged £50 “ just in case” - bit odd. Our room was lovely apart from the fact that there was only a foot between the end corner of the wooden bed and the dressing table. I bashed my shins repeatedly trying to squeeze past. As you would expect it’s spotlessly clean and the bed had crisp white sheets. The decor is lovely. There is a complimentary mini bar but it did look as if someone had been there before us as we were unable to both have the same drink (only one appletise, one sparkling water etc) We stayed for dinner which was pricey at £28 for a main. It was fine but nothing was very hot. We also felt pressured into buying a bottle of water as soon as we sat down. We had wine so would have been quite happy with tap water. Slept well- it’s quiet and luxurious. Breakfast was grim. Service was awful and I eventually had to go to the bar to order an orange juice. We were not offered any toast or anything else. Waited over half an hour for bubble and squeak which was literally swimming in grease and had greasy back bacon instead of streaky (they didn’t seem to think that the fact that this was different from the menu was an issue) They did offer to get me another breakfast but by this time we had been there ages- we were both starving and wanted to eat and get in with our day. I declined but wondered why there was no top up of my one cup of coffee, no toast, no croissant - BREAKFAST IS £30! The staff did say they would not have charged us for breakfast but couldn’t do this as we had booked with secret escapes. We were offered afternoon tea but had to get home to Kent. I couldn’t understand why the fact that we had booked bed and breakfast through secret escapes meant that we could not be offered anything back for the missed breakfast? We left to have a coffee in the lounge only to find that there was a business meeting in there which the staff did not know about. There was a group with laptops that had taken over the whole room and challenged us when we tried to get in. In essence - it was lovely to get away and I felt so sorry for my husband as he had tried so hard. It just wasn’t worth the money - staff were lovely and it has soo much potential.

Visited with a friend to have Brunch in the Brasserie, great view, relaxed environment. I ordered a Chicken pie and when it arrived it was cold in the middle! I sent it back and then when they didn't have a replacement I ordered the Fish & Chips. It was excellent and very tasty. The staff were lovely and they offered us complimentry drinks as an apology for the pie. I would recommend this place and I didn't thoroughly enjoy my visit.
