DISCLAIMER: This review has nothing to do with Tom or the wonderful place that he created and operated for many years. Unfortunately with his decline in health and management of the Inn by others around him, the operations is in decline too. I have visited the Inn multiple nights every year except one since 2007. First of all, Chris is doing his best to keep serving up great breakfasts. Unfortunately that's about the best of the service. Housekeeping is marginal. After speaking directly with the young woman who supposedly does housekeeping, she assured me that all of the dust on the exposed surfaces (caked in some places!) would be attended to. It wasn't. She is quite young and I anticipate she has never been shown how to properly clean a room, so not totally her fault. For those with allergy issues, Tom now has a bird. Its back in his living area, but bird dander/feathers will always spread throughout a home. Just an FYI. The last couple of times I have stayed there it was with hope that maybe last time was a "glitch" and it will be better this time. It is not a "glitch" and I had to make the tough decision to wait and see who will manage the Inn (if anyone?) after Tom is no longer with us or has sold the establishment because I can not stay there again under the current conditions.

Stayed for 3 nights in the station inn in Cresson. Had to keep a window open to sleep, room was stuffy and No ac. We also were constantly sneezing or coughing and found that there a lot of dust built up on fixtures, ledges, etc. great location and people but after several stays this was sadly our last one. Would recommend staying somewhere else in the area.

Built in the 1800s, this former railroaders boarding house now serves as a bed & breakfast. This NOT a modern hotel/mote; it's not supposed to be. It does not have air-conditioning (but windows open fully for nice mountain breezes) nor TVs in the rooms, nor are you able to make reservations through online travel agencies, which (believe me) can be a hassle anyway. I have stayed at The Station Inn many times over the last 15 years, and it's one of my all-time favorite getaways. The Inn is located in Cresson, Pa., up in the mountains at the spine of the Alleghenies. Most of its customers are railfans -- no surprise, as across the street it one of the busiest railroad main lines in the U.S. (No, it's not as noisy as you might think.) It's great sport sitting out on the porch watching this great transportation artery in action. Tom Davis and his team are among the friendliest people in the business. Their breakfasts are ample and satisfying. Rooms and bathroom facilities are spotless. Get back down to earth with a stay at The Station Inn. Nearby attractions include World Famous Horseshoe Curve, Lakemont Amusement Park in Altoona (home of the oldest operating wooden roller coaster in North America), the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona, and the Allegheny Portage Railroad historic site. Two nearby pubs I recommend are PJ's in Cresson and Al's Tavern in Altoona, Pa., just a few minutes down the road from Horseshoe Curve, an engineering marvel dating from the 19th Century.

Not fancy, clean and friendly with emphasis on trains and train fans. Great front porch with rockers to watch trains go by. Lots of train talk at breakfast. Good fresh food, good company, like coming home!

Tom Davis bought and renovated the “Station Inn” to create this wonderful bed-and-breakfast across the street from the mighty mainline of the old Pennsylvania Railroad, now Norfolk Southern, in a village near the summit of the Alleghenies. The magnificent front porch faces the tracks. When you hear diesels roar (uphill) or dynamic brakes whine (downhill), you can stay right there or cross the street for an even closer view. We saw 121 train movements in 44 hours. Clean, comfortable rooms, each decorated with colors/photos a nearby railroad. Many rooms face the tracks, so you can watch the trains at night from your window. A big living room with lots of train magazines. Highlight of the day: everybody meets for breakfast. You sit around a big table with Tom. Chris and Sandy have prepared wonderful food, and they join in. You can talk about trains (or anything else). You don’t even have to be a gung-ho railfan to love this place for a mini-vacation: the mountain air is fresh and there are plenty of hiking trails in the area.
