We recently stayed 2 nights at Hamanassett. Despite assurances on the website, the hosts did not abide by the CDC’s Covid-19 guidelines. We came downstairs the second day to find one of the owners and another person in the billiards room without masks on. When my husband and I walked past, neither attempted to find and put on a mask. The owner just asked how our stay was as if this was the most normal situation in the world. The next day at check out, the other owner came from the kitchen to the office without a mask on, talking to people along the way to other guests and saying that she was going to find a mask. I would expect the owners to have masks on hand at all times and to wear them whenever around guests. The first morning we paid extra to have breakfast brought to our room and this worked great. For the second morning, given that the weather was supposed to be nice, as instructed by the in-room binder we emailed the night before stating when we would be coming, and requesting to sit outside. In the a.m. we got a response that our request might not be accommodated on account of it being cold. When we came down, we politely asked again if we could sit outside. In a very brusque and unfriendly tone, one of the owners told us that there was no outdoor seating because it was too cold, and he would not “subject” the “help” to being “uncomfortable” by coming outside to serve us. Although we understand concern for the workers, no concern was made for our discomfort of sitting indoors in a poorly ventilated dining room during a respiratory pandemic. I will add that it was 56 degrees out and sunny. It was clear he did not want to go to the trouble of setting up outside. We later saw an email from the other owner saying that if we were concerned about being near others they could set us up in the living room, but the owner we encountered in person did not offer this. By the time we were seated, the other guests had finished dining and left, so we decided to stay and eat. Also, while check-in is contactless, check-out is not, which did not seem to make sense. While they have hand sanitizer out and signs saying masks are required, to advertise it as safe during a pandemic is a mischaracterization.

Yes, I came out from the kitchen on the way to my office to get my mask. It seems no matter where I am my mask is in the other room. As soon as I saw guests in the billiard room I asked them to move to the other side of the room which is six feet away while I retrieved and put on my mask. It is apparent this negative email is written because we refused to seat them outside in 56 degree weather. I had offered to set them up in the living room if they were uncomfortable in the dining room although we did have place settings set up 6 feet apart in accord with Covid protocol and also staggered serving times to limit number of guests in dining room. All they had to was request that setup and it would have been done. After the first night I received a lovely email from them telling me how much they were enjoying their room and the breakfast. Too bad they let one thing (not sitting outside) color their entire review of us.

Property's Favorite Review
My wife Marla and I stayed at Hamanassett for part of the July 4th holiday weekend, in need of a break from all the stresses of NYC and the rest of the world. Our stay could not have been lovelier or more relaxing -- except if it had been longer. The grounds are serene and beautifully kept, filled with the sounds of gentle breezes, chirping birds and the waterfall of the koi pond. Our bedroom was sumptuous and charmingly appointed, and the common rooms were inviting and and very relaxing. Ashley and Glenn are the gracious, thoughtful hosts of the property, and they impressed us with their scrupulous approach to the CDC guidelines currently in place to keep us all safe. They helped us with restaurant tips and reservations and provided plenty of anecdotes that gave us a new appreciation of the surrounding area. And Ashley’s breakfasts are everything you dream about from a B & B experience. We can’t wait for an opportunity to visit Hamanassett again for an extended visit. Thank you Ashley and Glenn for a delightful slice of serenity!

Clean and cozy with great history. Hosts Ashley and Glen are helpful and kind. This is a historic property in a great location to see the Brandywine Valley. Breakfast is a highlight and treat with delicious baked goods, eggs, and a delicious protein. Our mornings we enjoyed smoked sausage one morning, and perfectly cooked bacon the next.

We spent a couple of nights (and a couple of breakfasts) at the Hamanassett B&B over Labor Day weekend. We really enjoyed our stay. They took great care in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We felt very safe. They restrict the number of guests and leave a day or so in between reservation for the same room so that they can really deep clean. We stayed in the Inverness room. It was very large with a nice sitting area. The bathroom was on the small side but still just fine. We had a private deck in the front of the house that we enjoyed spending time on. Complimentary beverages, snacks and cookies provided for our stay. Enhanced our time there. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious. They had us spaced out and there was outdoor seating, as well. We also visited the Brandywine River Art Museum, the Wyeth family artists, and loved our visit. Only about 10 minutes away. Just beautiful. They ask so have a photographic exposition about the March in Selma. Very interesting. They also have lazy rafts in the river on a nice summer day. We didn’t do that but those who did seemed to be having a great day on the river. We look forward to returning to Hamanassett B&B soon!

We were seeking our first travel since the pandemic began, without sacrificing quality, charm, or service. We greatly exceeded our expectations with a delightful weekend at Hamanassett, as well as visiting the gardens at Winterthur and Longwood Gardens. After searching for proximity to these two attractions, and with priority for a COVID-19 safe accommodation, we found the perfect stay in this historic, charming, quality bed and breakfast only 20 minutes from Longwood Gardens. There is really no property comparable in the area in terms of service, safety, hospitality, and accommodation. The owners Ashley and Glen are perfect hosts and from the first phone call were more than helpful in making sure that we had found just the right spot for our weekend escape. The entire process with preparation of the room for our visit, as well as check in without human contact, and all subsequent safety provisions were beyond what we had expected. Among the highlights of the gracious hospitality are the splendid breakfasts each morning, and there was no compromise on safety there either as we were served on a private outdoor terrace with a caring server wearing a mask and with minimal contact. The table was laid for us prior to our dining experience, at the time we had reserved, and everything went perfectly. Our room and bathroom were quite large, and even offered a private balcony with table and chairs, for a drink before dinner and after long days of walking through gardens. The bucolic setting is serene on its seven acres with towering trees and a pasture with horses. We cannot recommend this distinctive property highly enough, or compliment our hosts sufficiently for the hospitality they provided us. I only wish that this charming bed and breakfast were easier to find on Tripadvisor, with reference to Longwood, Winterthur or other attractions of the Brandywine Valley. I truly would like for this delightful couple to receive the patronage that they merit based on location, quality, safety, service, and hospitality.
