We stayed at the Benson Hotel, due to its prime location and historical significance. During these COVID times, we appreciated the way the front desk staff supplied us with both bagged breakfasts and lunches each day. These came in handy as we explored the city on electric bicycles rented from Cycle Portland, nearby on 2nd Avenue. Bre, at the front desk, encouraged us to participate in the hotel's "Historic Stairwell Scavenger Hunt," which was fun and informative!
They had what I'm guessing was a COVID-bargain rate for a Sunday night and I've always wanted to see this place. The lobby has so much atmosphere with the wood finishings, chandeliers and high ceilings. Unfortunately we hit a shutdown week so we couldn't sit in there and have a drink. They charged their regular "amenity fee" even though they couldn't offer much in the way of amenities. Parking at $42 for the night is pretty steep but I guess that's what you pay in downtown Portland. You wouldn't want to leave your car on the street. Location great ... easy walk to Powell's Books or the Pearl.
My family of 4 stayed for two nights in May 2021 (Fri-Sun). Many areas were still boarded up but we were still able to enjoy/sightsee/visit a lot of places. There were also outdoor dining options. We booked through my points/rewards program; booked 2 rooms. Was able to call day before check-in to request adjoining rooms, and we were able to receive. Stayed on 10th floor - didn't get a good view :-( but wasn't a big deal. During Covid-time, so some extras were closed or modified. They did have cocktails (5-7pm) with 2 drinks per person (since it was a 2 night stay); we were in the city exploring so didn't get to use. They also provided to-go breakfasts until 10am (thank you Bre!) that gave you options: -cereal, yogurt, or hot instant oatmeal -choice of fruit -juices -granola bars -water There was also a coffee/tea station that was open during breakfast pick up. There were also two water bottles in each room that were complementary. Rooms were clean and nicely decorated. Beds were Tempur-pedic (which we loved!). Bathrooms were a little bit small but this is a historic hotel so that's a given. Having 2 bathrooms for the 4 of us was good. It would have been very tight if 4 were sharing. All Covid rules and regulations followed. There was a wedding party taking pictures in the main sitting/lobby area, and the staff were very good at monitoring them and reminding them of mask protocols. -Room doors are heavy and noisy, so don't plan on sleeping in if there are others occupying your same floor. -If you are able to do so, go down/up the stairwell! They are very nicely done (marble steps, white painted walls, well lit) and they have historical facts/pictures mounted on almost each floor. They also have a "directory" that tells you the 'theme" of each stairwell floor/pictures. Make sure to bring your room key to enter/exit too. -If taking Red line from airport, get off at Pioneer Square station, which is the closest stop to the hotel - just take Broadway to the hotel. (Going back to airport, make sure to get on from the EAST stop.) -Hotel was more towards downtown district, but definitely walk-friendly to all areas: Powell Bookstore, Pearl District, White Stag Sign, Saturday Market (only open Sat even though signs and some info say both Sat and Sun right now), Voodoo Donuts, Lan Su Chinese Garden (check website-Lansugarden.org to make reservations in advance!).…
Beautiful hotel, great location! Clean and comfortable rooms. Staff was very nice and helpful. Felt very safe as we were here during COVID-19. Easy to have food delivered as we had no in restaurant dining.
I don’t think Portland Hospitality runs short here at the Benson. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with such warmth and hospitality to the moment we checked out. Even though i arrived late to check in, around 10pm, the customer service was top notch. We were even greeted with a complementary beverage. Room was great bed was amazing and pillows could be better. But the people working there were even better. Definitely will be back.
