The Hotel Zags Portland is an inviting urban retreat celebrated for its stylish ambiance and convenient downtown location, making it a hit with those looking to explore the city. Guests appreciate the friendly staff and array of modern amenities, although there's a mixed reception regarding room maintenance and HVAC function. While the hotel's cleanliness generally meets high standards, some visitors have highlighted service inconsistencies. Additionally, the value proposition is sometimes questioned due to undisclosed fees that catch guests off guard.

We stayed here for 4 nights. Rooms were very clean, and had a lot of space to move around. Housekeeping is not done until the end of the stay, but this is intentional to give guests privacy (no one is in your room other than you) and for ecological purposes. However, you can request cleaning and linen as needed from the front desk.

Air conditioning worked very well, and the controls were easy to use. It's a little loud, like a dishwasher running at night. I did sleep well in the evenings, as it is pretty quiet outside. Hot water was nice and toasty, and both shower and tub worked well. The only quirk is that the bathroom door is a sliding door, and was not completely flush with the frame, meaning that it was slightly ajar when closed. Awkward when sharing the room with family.

There is a complimentary breakfast in the restaurant each morning that was very nice and comprehensive, including fruits, yogurts, bagels, english muffins, regular muffins, tea, coffee, and cereals. We had dinner once in the evening, and the food was very nice as well, with good service to our table outside on the outdoor courtyard.

Speaking of the courtyard, we enjoyed it a lot! Multiple fireplaces that were lit during the evenings, lots of seating, cornhole games, chalk for kids to draw on the pavement, and smores in the evening... it very much made it feel like home away from home. An extra touch that we didn't expect!

There is a gear shack that I wanted to use when I booked but I just didn't have time during the trip to use it. However, there were plenty of bikes, skateboards, nintendo switches, balls, and other equipment freely available.

The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable, and did an excellent job of controlling access to the guest-only portions of the hotel, making it a safer place for everyone. Elevators require a keycard to go up to the rooms, and the parking area is secured as well.

I will definitely use this hotel again if I need a short stay in Portland.

We had a great stay at Hotel Zags. We'd been a road trip for a week with a different hotel every night and were very glad that the first hotel we decided to stay for two nights was Hotel Zags as it was nicest room on our 16 day road trip. The decor is all stylish and modern and everything is very clean. We had a great view of the courtyard garden, Parking was easy either outside the lobby area or in the underground car park. There was an additional charge of $25+tax a night for parking. There was cheaper parking in nearby garages if you don't mind walking a block or two.

They had a great area in the lobby with all kinds of equipment for sports and bicycles that could be borrowed for free. We weren't there long enough to make use of that but I loved the idea.

The room was very spacious with a huge comfortable bed and pillows and lovely toiletries.

The staff were all very helpful and friendly. The lady who checked us in gave us good advice about walking along the waterfront to a restaurant we had chosen. We weren't sure it was safe or a nice walk but she reassured us and was quite correct. We got a tram back which was a lot of fun. The hotel is on the bus and tram routes and very well located.

Portland downtown and old town areas are 'interesting'. A shock to us and not a place we will return to unless we hear it has improved. We were very glad to have chosen Hotel Zags in a nice area of the city as some of the hotels I'd considered were in neighbourhoods I really didn't want to spend time in having walked by when sight-seeing.

Knowledgeable and pleasant front desk staff (late night and early early morning) on site parking was a breeze, secure clean room, comfy bed, plenty of hot water. Excellent downtown location. We appreciated the effort they make to be "earth friendly".

When you pay this much for a room you expect your trash, towels and bed to be made daily Coffee to be replaced. Stayed week at Zags (suite). No service until Wednesday? NO! That is not right. We asked on Monday and they did clean on Tuesday and then not again. Even tho we requested EVERYDAY for the next day for at least our trash to be taken away. It never was. Even though everyone said it would be done the next day. Coffee cups, pizza boxes, extra bath mats, washcloths. It is remiss on your part. Seriously. I just don’t know why you think this policy ok. It’s not. When you stay at a hotel you pay for service. Especially
At those rates. I know the desk people can give us towels and coffee but that really shouldn’t be their job.

Then the cafe ran out of espresso.
Hello it’s Saturday morning!
The HVAC never worked in our room.

And our toilet was stopped up for two days. They came and plunged. Said it was good. Man that was a rough morning at the Zags.

Having said all of this . The desk people were very nice and accommodating even if there was some disconnect between writing down a request and actually getting it done

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback about your recent stay at Hotel Zags. We sincerely apologize for the numerous issues you encountered during your visit. Your experience is not reflective of the high standards we strive to maintain, and we deeply regret the inconvenience you faced. We are very sorry to hear about the lapses in housekeeping service, especially after asking multiple times. Our current policy is to conduct housekeeping service on the 3rd day unless requested otherwise. It’s disappointing to learn that we fell short in this regard. Please be assured that we are addressing these concerns with our housekeeping team to ensure such oversights do not occur in the future. The issues with the HVAC system and the toilet in your suite are also concerning. We apologize for any discomfort and frustration this caused. Our maintenance team will be reviewing these matters to prevent future occurrences. Running out of espresso in the cafe, especially on a Saturday morning, is unacceptable. We understand the importance of these details to our guests and will work to ensure better stock management going forward. Despite these challenges, we are pleased to hear that our front desk staff were kind and accommodating. We will work on improving the communication and follow-through between our team members to ensure guest requests are promptly and effectively handled. Your feedback is invaluable as it helps us improve our services. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide you with a much-improved experience.

Stayed seven nights at the Hotel Zag. I had an issue with my reservation and Brielle was amazing in her help navigating through that as well as helping us get settled when we arrived. The hotel is in a great location to walk throughout the downtown neighborhoods and easy to get in and out of the city for hiking and rafting. Continental breakfast was good (could use more protein) and they have a bar and restaurant on site. We didn’t eat there but they looked busy and the dishes looked good. Parking is easy but a little pricey and other options are available if you are OK a block away. I would stay again next time I am in town.

We understand that parking can be a bit pricey, but we’re glad you found it manageable and appreciate your feedback on alternative options. During my stay, I experienced some challenges that I believe the hotel can address for improved guest satisfaction. The mattress quality was uncomfortable, leading to back aches. The complimentary breakfast options were limited, and I found that the hot food was not readily available. They only offered hard boiled eggs, plain bagel, costsco muffins and pop tarts. Two out of three toaster didn't work. They Additionally, there were issues cream cheese availability. How do you ran out of cream cream and coffee creamer multiple times a week? I chose to have breakfast outside the hotel due to these limitations. Furthermore, I observed that the hotel charges an "amenities" fee regardless of whether the amenities are used. These experiences left me feeling dissatisfied with my stay. I believe that addressing these issues would greatly enhance the overall guest experience at the hotel.

Unfortunately, I had a very negative experience during my stay at Hotel Zags. To start, we requested a room with 2 queen size beds but were given a king. After a struggle with the front desk we were able to get the room changed. Then in the morning, we went to get breakfast around 9am and all that was available were 2 wrinkly bagels and a pastry in which we were expected to pay for. We did not get breakfast at the hotel and instead had to walk to Safeway.
Then later in the afternoon, there was a mishap with the room keys because we had the key from the original room. When we asked the room for another key, we were told no because our name was not on the reservation. However, the person who's card we provided for the "hold" the hotel makes you do when you check in was on file. After 1.5hrs and multiple conversations, we were able to get a manager to the front desk. He appeared very frazzled and uneducated on the computer system to help us solve the problem. After another half hour we were able to get the key and barely make it to the event we were in town for the weekend for.
The most frustrating part of the stay and even close to criminal was the checkout process. We were charged $80 for parking that we never used and another $60 for "guest amenities" that were once again never used or were we informed at check-in that there would be such a charge. Once again, the same manager was very frazzled and unprofessional and had to go behind closed doors to maintain composure. We showed him multiple emails and confirmations to show proof that we were not aware of the charges. Eventually, after he helped multiple other guests, he said he would remove the charges. However, the charges were never removed. The hotel has been contacted multiple times and calls have been rejected or hung up on. Very disappointed that a place would take advantage of people trying to enjoy their city.

I'm very sorry to hear about the negative experience you had during your stay at The Hotel Zags. Your feedback is important, and we take it seriously to improve our services and guest experience. Please allow me to address your concerns: Firstly, I apologize for the mix-up with your room assignment. It's disappointing to hear that you had to struggle to get the room type you originally requested. Your experience at breakfast is also unacceptable; we strive to offer a variety of fresh options and will review our offerings to ensure this does not happen again. Regarding the mishap with the room keys, I understand how frustrating it must have been to deal with this issue, especially when you were on a tight schedule. We will review our procedures to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure all staff are adequately trained to handle such situations efficiently and professionally. The issues you encountered during checkout, including the incorrect charges for parking and guest amenities, are concerning. It is our responsibility to ensure that all charges are transparent and communicated clearly at check-in. We apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this caused you. We deeply regret the poor handling of your concerns by our manager and the subsequent lack of follow-up. This is not the standard of service we aim to provide. I assure you that your feedback will be used to address these issues internally, and we will take the necessary steps to ensure this does not happen again. Please contact me directly at daryn.cyrus@thehotelzags.com, and I will make sure to resolve any outstanding issues related to your charges. Your satisfaction is important to us, and we hope to have the opportunity to make things right. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. We value your feedback and will work hard to improve our services.

The hotel didn't look as pictured. Trimmings and fixtures were cheap and the grout was molding. Shower curtain looked cheap and the carpet was wet from a previous cleaning. Room was noisy - from both the street and within the hotel (washer or boiler room noise?).

Worst of all, we were charged a required $30 "amenities" fee, which we could not remove. We booked thru Expedia, and this amenities fee was tacked on upon arrival at the hotel. It wasn't advertised or warned to us ahead of time, so we had no choice but to pay it.

It was a really deceptive business practice, on top of the cheap condition of our stay. Although the desk staff were polite and friendly, I'd warn everyone not to stay here - there are a lot better places for the price, especially after the non-optional fee is added.

The prime downtown location and reasonable price prompted our decision to stay at Hotel Zags. Stepping into the lobby we immediately understood we stumbled into a gem. The impeccably clean, artfully decorated lobby opens to a central courtyard providing less a garden space but more like urban oasis.
Zags has the feel of an older motel reborn into a stylish renaissance. Don’t let the nondescript exterior fool you. Friendly professional staff, clean rooms…I mean CLEAN rooms, comfortable beds and carefully considered amenities portray an establishment booked at twice the room rate.
Secure parking also very convenient.

The restaurant’s killer cappuccino sealed our conviction that we’ll be returning guests.

For the July 23-24, 2022 weekend we had use of the King Premier City View room with soaking tub room to celebrate my partner's birthday weekend.

Upon entering, the room was nice in its setup and layout. The King size bed was comfortable to sleep on with a nice pillow top firm mattress and pillows offered. The A/C worked well to keep the room comfortable. And the room was quiet, barely heard any city noise at night. You need your key card to access the elevator to your floor and room, which is a nice security feature.

It didn't have any USB ports which was annoying and an old-fashioned clock radio that you could plug in an IPod on top (if one had one anymore). It would have been nice if the room had a USB plug in base or lamps that had that feature like other upscale hotels offer nowadays. Luckily, we had brought our adaptors.

It had a mini fridge which we were thankful that came with the room and got used.

The closet had two robes in it, but we didn’t use them. The bathroom amenities and shower gel, shampoo and conditioner offerings were pleasant to use. There was no ice bucket in the room, however out in the hallway by the elevator, they had a large freezer chest filled with mini plastics bags of ice for you to use.

The soaking tub was deep and worked well, but you had to be very careful stepping over the high tub to get in/out, older people with mobility issues would find this difficult and dangerous. I know this is supposed to be an added feature for the room, but honestly, we mainly ended up using the room to sleep in and had to remind ourselves to use the tub, which we only did once. After 20 minutes of sitting in it we were bored, so not sure it’s worth the added price for this feature plus all that wasted water. I think I’d rather have them add a hot tub to their enclosed outdoor community space then add more soaking tubs in other rooms.

Speaking of, the enclosed outdoor community space was attractive and nicely arranged for use with various social areas like a couple of gas fire pits, game section, etc. and over the weekend they had the live Portland based soul-folk musical group “Wren the band” perform Sunday afternoon who were fantastic while a local wine vendor sampled their wares each afternoon making it for a fun and relaxing afternoon.

We didn’t get a chance to try the restraint downstairs as it was closed over the weekend. However, there are restaurants within walking distance around the neighborhood.

Overall, the staff we engaged with were pleasant, accommodating and helpful and greeted us upon entering each time making for a friendly comfortable atmosphere.

I would recommend the Hotel Zags to stay in, but next time I think we will try a room without the soaking tub.

There was a $15 minibar credit, although I am not sure it was "daily." Minibar had smaller bottles of wine, beer, Voss bottled water, soda, little tins of coated pretzels, gummy bears, a Snickers... things like that. I do not think it could be applied to the restaurant, but I never asked - so, it could be worth a shot.
