Rooms appear to have had a recent makeover and were freshly painted - Sept 2018. They are clean and this could be a recommended motel ... BUT ... mgmt has some problems.
We arrived at 2pm and attempted to book a room with the manager at reception. The price he quoted was 50 USD above the published internet price. We asked for the published price and were advised no reduction was possible and we should "go and book on the internet". We did and returned at 4pm to find the same person on reception.
Our check in was slow with lots of forms to be filled in. We walked into our room to find bedding and towels from the previous occupant spread across the floor. The bed was unmade and bins were full, the bathroom had not been cleaned.
Returning to reception the manager was checking in a party of 4, we advised him that our room was not ready. The manager replied "I know your room has not yet been serviced". He completed checking in the 4 people ahead of us who appeared to receive rooms that were ready. He declined to give us another room and said we needed to wait for 5 minutes for the maid to clean the room. 25 minutes later he returned after going to chase up the maid to advise the room was ready.
The next night (we had unfortunately booked and paid for 2 nights) we found the wet towels had been removed but the maid had "forgotten" to provide new towels. Drying with 2 hand towels after a shower is not fun.
Two further issues, 1. The hot water is only warm, OK (just) for a shower but too cold for a bath,. 2. The coffee sachets were replaced for day 2 but we found the coffee machine had not been cleaned or emptied.
I don't know if the person on reception (glasses with red side pieces) is the owner but trying to overcharge a customer and then penalising them for challenging this is DUMB and very poor business.
Our one night stay was interrupted by a fire next door and in the gorge with a mandatory evacuation. Prior to our hurried departure, the room and surrounding grounds were what we expected, room dated but clean and comfortable, grounds handsome with a commanding view of the Columbia River Gorge. On our return the next morning to the thankfully undamaged lodge, the room had been cleaned with the few items not taken in a orderly pile on the chair. The owner, friendly and concerned ,led us to our room as the fire was still ongoing nearby, saying we wouldn’t be charge. My kids had stayed at the Westcliff several times over the years and had their friends stay there when getting married. A good and credible choice.
Clean, quiet, less expensive than other hotels we looked at in the area. Will definitely come back next time we are in Hood River. Room was large with a cabana adjoining that was as big as the room. Heck the coffee in the room was even decent.
We checked this place out based on the outside of the motel. The rate was decent for the area, expectations weren’t all that high. What a shock when we opened the door. The room was very clean, very nicely decorated and roomy. The closet was behind a full length mirror, a very comfortable chair with a foot stool, and a good sized flat screen tv. As we were taking our belongings into our room, the gentleman we dealt with at the desk happened by. I mentioned to him what a lovely room it was. He was with another guest who mentioned to us he told the man the same thing. I highly recommend this motel.
First the good - the property appears to be newly renovated. The rooms are in very good condition. The rooms are also clean with an exception described below. There is a Safeway with a Starbucks and a McDonald's across the street. Easy freeway access to I-84 and to downtown Hood River. Summer in Hood River is a very expensive season but I got a rate at the Sunset Motel that was much lower than competing properties.
The not so good - I came back one night after an event and found that the room was not serviced, it was as it was when I left with the exception that someone took the tip I left for the housekeeper. The manager tried to make an excuse as to why this happened (the employee went home sick), but I thought that was bogus. I told hime I didn't care about some employee being sick, but he or another manager had the responsibility to see that all rooms were serviced. Another thing that bothers me is that you are required to pay in advance upon check in. Its not an advance payments situation where you get a discount, you just have to pay youi full reservation proce up front. I thought the wifi was slow.
Summary: Would I stay there again? Yes I would, but it would not be my first choice in Hood River. There are other properties in Hood River with more amenities and in better neighborhoods of Hood River. For a good nights sleep in a clean room, the Sunset would do just fine.
