It's a nicely restored hotel, with lovely common rooms with comfortable reading chairs - a must in my book! The breakfast was quite good, although dinner was over-priced; we had no other choice, as the sidewalks in Dufur Oregon roll up pretty early on Monday nights... On other nights, the tavern across the street is open for steak dinners. I... More

My wife and I stayed at the Balch for our anniversary this week and it was an extraordinary experience that was totally unexpected. The timeless beauty of the restored building reflects the care and attentiveness of Josiah and his staff. We intentionally chose the 3rd floor walk-up to remind us of our stays in Europe. The dinner was exquisite on... More

Wonderful old hotel nicely restored. New owner has attracted a fantastic staff. We felt right at home. If you are infirm mind the lack of elevator and high sided bath tubs. All else easy. And a fine breakfast to boot.

We have been driving thru Dufur Oregon for 20 years, and watched as the Balch Hotel was renovated. We went out yesterday, had a good drive and settled in to the hotel in the afternoon. The Balch has 3 floors and some of the rooms have A/c and private baths. Which is what we took. Simple comfortable and very nice... More

The staff was amazingly helpful and accommodating, food was delicious, cookies were waiting at check in. Grounds are beautiful. They made sure I was well fueled for the next day's riding by getting a boxed breakfast prepared ahead of time. Can't wait to go back and highly recommend to any cyclists needing a stop on a long trip.

A Beautiful, Elegant old hotel. Great place to relax and sit outside and read a book or just daydream. The staff are friendly make you feel special while you stay. We arrived to fresh cookies and smiling faces. We sat and had a beer out on the lawn in the evening and in the morning had coffee out on the... More

We stayed here for two nights as part of a two week trip through Oregon. The Balch Hotel certainly stands out in my memory as one of the best stops. The building itself is elegant, the setting is peaceful and unique. It's a perfect jump off spot for sightseeing in the surrounding area. It's also very nice to sit outside... More

Wonderfully restored and appointed hotel. Extremely friendly staff, rooms were nice but you need to remember that this is a historic hotel so our shared bathroom, etc. If you are looking for all the modern conveniences of life, perhaps not the place for you. If you are looking for a great experience, history, fabulous people and great cuisine, book it... More

Off the beaten track, historic old hotel. Nothing to do but enjoy the beautiful view, scenery, perhaps get to know some other interesting guests drawn to places like this. Simple, delicious food, too. Kind staff and very accommodating. Wish we could have stayed longer.

If you are tripping up the Columbia Gorge in Oregon (something you don’t want to miss) and plan to spend the night near The Dalles or Hood River, consider staying at the Balch Hotel nestled in the rolling foothills in the tiny town of Dufur. To get there, drive an easy 15 miles south of The Dalles, down highway 97,... More
