This is a gorgeous property. The building is charmingly historic, but well-tended and comfortable. It is evident they spend a ton of time and energy on the grounds. Our room was well-appointed and our stay included many extras - notably, fresh chocolate chip cookies. We ate dinner at the hotel, and that was our favorite part. Their new chef is terrific and they served classics done right. We dined outside on the beautiful patio. Breakfast was a lovely basket that included a fresh-baked muffin, egg, yogurt, and something I can't recall. Also, I forgot a pair of shoes in our room, and they mailed them to me immediately!

Rooms require stairs, no elevator in this 1907 gem! No TV just quiet to enjoy. Had supper on the lawn and breakfast on the patio! The farm sprinklers next door brought back pleasant childhood memories!

This was possibly the most enjoyable hotel stay of my life! What a beautiful, relaxing location. All of the staff were outstanding- friendly, personable and exceptionally attentive. The period charm of the hotel itself was a real treat and the restaurant serves a wonderful menu. We will absolutely return.

The best word to describe the Balch Hotel is MAGICAL. My husband and I found this property randomly when looking for places in the gorge for a long weekend. I had never been to Dufur, and I had never heard of the Balch. The property is absolutely beautiful, and relaxing in every way. The rooms are not large, but we did spend a bit more for a room with a private bathroom. The staff is all lovely and very accommodating. Do NOT miss out on dinner in their bistro! The new executive chef is fabulous, and will create a meal you won't soon forget. We will be back!

We had an absolutely amazing time at the Balch Hotel. The building and grounds are unbelievably beautiful. We splurged for a stay in the King Suite because we wanted Mt. Hood views, the jacuzzi tub, and air conditioning. The Balch Hotel did not disappoint. Dinner was incredible. We sat outside in the grass for dinner and it was one of the most pleasant experiences we have ever had in regards to cuisine and setting. The room was mostly clean but under the bed and around the bed was quite dusty. The sink drained slowly. And the other disappointment was that when we booked, the website stated full breakfast. It helped us justify the cost of the room, which was somewhat high because it was their best room. Sadly, when it came time for breakfast, we received an individual continental breakfast. It was delicious and better than average for a cont. breakfast, but we were so excited for a warm, cooked breakfast. It appears they have since removed any mention of a full breakfast, I wonder if it was because others had also complained. The night before we had a full dinner, so it couldn't have been because of Covid in our case. Due to the location, I don't believe we will be back, but I highly recommend this hotel to anyone passing through the area.

It’s the first time, since I came to the USA, to stay in a historical hotel. It was a full immersion into my memories from Europe, where I was born and grew up. Maybe I am sentimental… I appreciated the care and the details that the owners put in decorating the rooms and the social spaces. I loved the toiletries: high quality soap, shampoo, conditioner. I loved the presence of pets in the hotel!

I’ve been wanting to stay at the Balch for years, but we always had a dog along when we were in the area, so never did. Well, sadly we were dog-less this trip, so decided to give it a try. (While booking I discovered we could have come earlier - they actually have some dog-friendly rooms now!) Anyway, what a lovely, peaceful oasis! We appreciated the inclusive welcome that was made evident not only in the entry signage but also by the friendly and eager-to-help staff. We enjoyed our conversations with the other guests as well. The beautifully-tended patio/garden was the perfect setting for enjoying dinner (my husband commented on the excellent preparation of his steak, while I was delighted to have vegetarian and even vegan options to choose from), and breakfast with just birds singing as background music was a wonderful way to start the day. Love that this historic hotel has been preserved while being modernized for today’s traveler. Access to the electric car charger was huge in making our travels easy. We really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and look forward to returning to try out the king suite, which we had booked originally but wasn’t available when we changed our plans at the last minute (which they kindly accommodated with another nice room).

The Balch Hotel is located in the beautiful valley town of Dufur. It’s a quiet town and the relaxed atmosphere continues into the hotel. Everyone is friendly. The environment is historic and comfortable. The gardens are groomed and natural. We had a wonderful room and relaxed in the sitting room before calling it a night. Morning was with great coffee and health breakfast. We were welcomed by a beautiful clear and sunny morning with a view of Mt Hood and green fields. We hope to make The Balch Hotel a regular event in our lives.
