We had a really nice stay at the Madsen. The bed and bed linen were super comfy, and the owner (?) Phil was very accommodating and friendly. The view from the seaside rooms is superb, right on the beach. Highly recommended.

With only a few rooms, this hotel has the intimate feel of a luxury B&B rather than a hotel (and all the better for it!). Facilities have been well described in previous reviews and I can confirm these are accurate; though you may have to 'serve yourself' at times you still get better facilities than most large chain hotels. I... More

The Madsen is a gorgeous boutique hotel in a sleepy small town. Great breakfast each morning, comfortable bed and lots of amenities - nice bathroom products, complimentary sherry or port, plunger coffee, plenty of games and dvds to borrow. Penguin has zero dinner options on a Monday or Tuesday night but Ulverstone or Burnie are only about 15 minutes drive... More

Thank you for the accurate description of The Madsen and Penguin in particular, the latter is indeed a sleepy small boutique town, particularly regarding dining options in the evening. We have good news to report regarding dining options on the Monday and Tuesday that previously only had the bistro at the Neptune Hotel open on those nights. Perpendicular Café is... More

we had two nights here - and like other correspondents, had a great time but found the hotel a little tired we had booked a 2 night deal that included 'French' champagne and chocolate truffles - i am unsure whether we should have asked for them - however - they weren't to be seen the honour bar is fine and... The reviewer is incorrect to say that we offered French champagne, but rather we had always advertised online French bubbly (ie. similar to champagne but not from the Champagne region). In the past we noted that many guests did not take up this option, particularly a majority of Australians who prefer to drink local bubbly. If we had offered French... More

Almost have five stars but that's hard to get from me and I have a few minor criticisms. Minor I emphasise. We looked for a spa suite with a ocean view... Not many to choose from. The Penthouse at the Madsen overlooks the ocean and even though the road is between the hotel and the beach traffic noise is minor.... More

We thank the guest for his review, and have nothing to add regarding his fair appraisal of the Penthouse. The issue of the clock radio is noted, and all rooms have one that serves as an iPhone dock, however the charger went missing and we temporarily removed it that coincided with the reviewer's stay. A new charger has been put... More

I think we must have stayed at another Madsen than that which others have described on this page. On arrival Phil was just leaving in his car. later, he said he thought it was us arriving. but rather wait and see, he drove off? We entered via entry pin code ( after a phone call to Phil )to a dining... More

Check-in time is 2pm, and the guest arrived before noon as I was going to the hospital to visit my head cleaner who recently had a serious heart attack. Being a small boutique hotel, the loss of a key staff member has meant that we've had temporarily to focus on the major tasks being cleanliness inside the rooms and in... More

The Madsen Boutique Hotel is located right on the waterfront in the small town of Penguin. Formerly a bank, it has been skillfully adapted into a small, but very personal hotel. The current owners are most engaging and take pride in showing their newly-arrived guests around, including outlining some of the building's history in its various previous incarnations. It would... A belated thank you for the accurate description of the range of facilities that The Madsen offers, because they range from the higher star-rated class of spa rooms of the Penthouse, the Beachfront Spa Suite and Executive Spa Rooms to the well-appointed Waterfront Room and the two smaller rooms of the Deluxe and Superior Rooms that only have shower ensuites.... We really loved staying at the Masden. The staff were so helpful (it was a Sunday night in June and they were great about helping us work out which restaurants etc were open). Our room was very confortable with a great view and the sound of the little waves at night. The breakfast/lounge area is very funky and welcoming and... More
