The George has been around for as long as anyone can remember, but in early 2016 it was been treated to a huge makeover including all 15 en-suite bedrooms. Standing proudly in the centre of Shipston High Street, it still remains as the tallest building on the street at three and a half stories. We describe the look as modern yet sympathetic to it's late 18th century features with a feel of casual elegance about it. All the rooms are decorated to a high standard, offering a comfy place to stay. Their sophisticated simplicity gives them a luxurious feel. They all have en-suite bathrooms and breakfast is always included. The ground floor of the George Townhouse is spacious, and our extensive menu covers all meal times. Call in at the start of the day and enjoy a freshly cooked Full English breakfast in the parlour, or pop into our garden room to sample a sharing board and glass of wine over lunch. In the evening treat yourself to a steak in the pantry, sourced from Todenham Manor Farm just 4 miles away.

Lovely 2 night stay in a spacious, very comfortable room. The George take great pride in the small things providing luxurious toiletries, artisan coffees and treats in the rooms. The staff are a credit to the hotel, esp Lee, they are friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble. We ate at the restaurant both evenings and the food did not disappoint, fresh produce and ample portion size. The vegan burger was amazing and that’s coming from a meat eater! Cocktails were fab too. We will definitely be back for another visit. Thank you for a wonderful break.

Nice pub in a nice small town. Food took a while but was tasty if slightly expensive but pretty standard for the area. Had good friendly service from Akira who had good knowledge of the beers on offer.

Quite a mixed bag having stayed one night. The waitress in the restaurant was lovely and the food was good value for money with a wide menu available. However, the room had several weeks worth of dust built up on the bedside lamp cables, around door frames and wooden detailing in the room, there was also evidence of cobwebs and damp on the external facing walls. Despite good service in the restaurant the night before we waited 20 minutes for two pots of tea and after asking twice my partner ended up going to the bar to ask a third time. Based on our experience the staff seemed more interested in the bar rather than guests staying overnight. It’s disappointing that these small details if resolved would have completely changed our overall experience. In summary, overpriced,

I'm really sorry to hear your experience with us wasn't up to our usual high standards. I will be sitting down with our housekeeping team to see how we can improve our standards as will I with the restaurant team. You are correct in saying that these small details are what make the difference and I will get these corrected right away. My apologies once again.

Positives (why 4 star) Very comfy bed that was clean. Nice toiletries Modern presentation Lovely drink choices It said cosy double and it told the truth Restaurant and bar very clean and modern Lovely decor in bathroom - I’d do my own bathroom in exactly the same tiles they were gorgeous. Negative (why not 5 star) Cosy was a bit too snug if I’m honest Lights were falling out of the ceiling View onto roof top was eugh You had to have the blinds shut all the time as rooms/corridor opposite looked over you. Remains from previous guests under bed (plastic bags and things) indicates a less thorough cleaning attitude. Corner of shower needed some cleaning attention too. Staff did their job and were polite and professional. Would I stay again? Yes.

Thank you for such a great, detailed review. It is reviews like these with both the positives and negatives that really give us chance to improve. I will catch up with the housekeeping team to ensure our standards are not slipping. Thank you once again.
