We had a midweek meal and stay over at The Running Horses. It’s a perfect location after a beautiful day’s walk around Box Hill beauty spot. Excellent in every way, The evening meal was superb and the vegetarian options were very tasty which you can’t say in many places. Service was efficient and friendly. The accommodation was perfect. We had a lovely room at the back, which was very quiet and super comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean and we felt secure in their covid protocol that was simple, clear and efficient. We would highly recommend this place to anyone.
We've been here a number of times and like the ambience but were disappointed today. First a surly male member of staff asked for PROOF we had a mask exemption. I doubt anyone could or would want to do that in a public place even if they could. Any disability is a private matter. Discourteous and probably unlawful. Short measure on glass of beer had to be topped up. Food good but service very slow even though not busy. We weren't offered a dessert menu and had to go and ask for the bill. Put money on table and left (minimal tip) then we got a call saying we hadn't paid! If they cleared tables more efficiently they would have found it.
Booked a table for 2 and amended over the phone to 3. Rocked up and had a small issue with booking having gone awry but manager dealt with professionally and efficiently. Very popular with walkers and you MUST book ahead. Shared bread and hummus followed by sirloin of beef with veg and yorkies. Great pub to end a walk and highly recommend.
We stayed two nights at the Running Horses last weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The Running Horses is a centuries-old coaching inn at the foot of Box Hill. The interior of the pub feels very authentic, with wood panelling and a log fire in the bar, and a slightly undulating floor in our room (Sandown)! The staff are friendly and attentive, and they appear to be adjusting to the latest COVID rules and guidelines well - several mask-less guests were asked politely to don masks on entry, there are hand sanitiser points throughout, and there is an app so you can order food and drinks directly to your table (though they haven’t quite managed to get the specials board onto it yet). And the food... the food! This is definitely restaurant-grade food in a coaching inn…
My wife and I have stayed at The Running Horses on a number of occasions, usually for one night when on business or travelling onward; we always eat in the restaurant and our most recent stay was as enjoyable as ever. Being near to Box Hill is great for walkers; the rooms are all superbly furnished and comfortable and food and service are of an excellent standard which always leaves us searching for reasons to return.
