The Running Horses is a perfect country inn at the heart of picturesque Mickleham village in the Surrey hills. Step inside and you’ll discover one of the most charming places to eat and stay in Surrey. Dating back to the 16th century, it was once a coaching house. Back in those days, the inn’s clientele provided rich pickings for highwaymen. Thankfully, things are a little more peaceful these days, but some traditions live on. You’ll still find wonderful home-cooked British food, made with the freshest ingredients, accompanied by a wine list to compare with the top restaurants. The Running Horses has been family owned and run for the last fifteen years. And because we’re not part of a chain, the inn is full of character and individual touches. You’re guaranteed a warm welcome from the moment you enter the cosy bar with its roaring log fire.

The Running Horses is a favourite for an after work catch up or weekend refresh. The staff tonight excelled themselves with customer service at it's best when presented with a group clearly unfamiliar with the 'not so new' requirements of face masks in public places. They were consistently polite, helpful; providing both masks and details of when they should be worn, and happy to reiterate requirements when repeatedly needed without any sign of frustration. I thought it needed a mention. Well done all.

Response from Tom Collingwood, General Manager at The Running Horses
Responded Nov 22, 2020
Hi Helen, Firstly - my apologies for the delay in responding to this review. Lockdown Part 2 landed upon us very rapidly. Your comments regarding the teams response to a very tricky situation is wonderful to hear. COVID is a strange and truly unique situation for all concerned and as you can imagine we do deal with many different opinions on the matter and the steps put in place to deal with it. It is always so lovely to hear from our customers that the team have dealt with a difficult situation so well. I have already spoken to Mark, Lauren and Izzy regarding their careful and successful handling of the matter and shown them your review, They were indeed very happy to see that you spoke so positively. Hope to see you again one day very soon. Tom Collingwood General Manager

Had an early evening meal after a long, wet and windy walk with the dogs. Lucky enough to have a spot by the fire to dry us all off. Food was fantastic, very friendly. Tricky Covid adverse clients. The staff were wonderful and dealt with it so well. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Lovely overnight stay after a day walking in the Surrey hills. Very welcoming and hospitable, super comfortable room, charming and characterful building and absolutely delicious food both for the 3 course dinner we enjoyed and hearty breakfast the next morning. Wouldn’t hesitate to return

We had a lovely stay over the weekend at the Running Horses. We did have a slight issue with our rooms as we had been misinformed about the set up but the manager Tom could not be more helpful with trying to resolve this issue. Overall a fabulous stay and would definitely return. The food was also delicious!

We had a midweek meal and stay over at The Running Horses. It’s a perfect location after a beautiful day’s walk around Box Hill beauty spot. Excellent in every way, The evening meal was superb and the vegetarian options were very tasty which you can’t say in many places. Service was efficient and friendly. The accommodation was perfect. We had a lovely room at the back, which was very quiet and super comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean and we felt secure in their covid protocol that was simple, clear and efficient. We would highly recommend this place to anyone.
