The Running Horses is a perfect country inn at the heart of picturesque Mickleham village in the Surrey hills. Step inside and you’ll discover one of the most charming places to eat and stay in Surrey. Dating back to the 16th century, it was once a coaching house. Back in those days, the inn’s clientele provided rich pickings for highwaymen. Thankfully, things are a little more peaceful these days, but some traditions live on. You’ll still find wonderful home-cooked British food, made with the freshest ingredients, accompanied by a wine list to compare with the top restaurants. The Running Horses has been family owned and run for the last fifteen years. And because we’re not part of a chain, the inn is full of character and individual touches. You’re guaranteed a warm welcome from the moment you enter the cosy bar with its roaring log fire.

We stayed here whilst having a night away exploring the Surrey Downs. Upon arrival we were taken aback at how quaint the inn was and how much character it had. It’s steeped in interesting history (tales of racing horses and highwaymen). The owner made us feel very welcome instantly, giving us a brief history of the pub and the beautiful and cosy room we stayed in. Breakfast was delicious and we were even treated to some pastries and croissants on top of our order, free of charge. It was fantastic value for money and we had a wonderful stay. It was also very Covid-secure, masks being worn in all communal areas and hand sanitizer available throughout the pub. Therefore, we wouldn’t hesitate to visit again or recommend to anyone looking for a short break away or staycation.

A warm welcome and excellent service. They couldn’t do enough for us. Room was lovely and warm too. Evening meal and breakfast was absolutely excellent. A very quaint and traditional Inn, very quirky and interesting with, quite simply, delightful staff who were friendly, engaging and very helpful. What a beautiful church opposite too! (Photo) Fantastic walking and cycling and a stones throw from all the Dorking has to offer. Thanks for a lovely stay and hope to see you soon!

Excellent stay last weekend with great food and drink and the ambience expected in an English country pub. The fire in the lounge was most welcoming and the Gatehouse a secluded retreat. Praise to all the staff for ensuring we had such a good time.

We are a small company with 7 attendees at our xmas get together this year which made The Running Horses a good choice for us. We were given a very adequate well serviced board room style (though lovely and authentic - warm, non corporate) which was the ideal place for our meeting session during the afternoon. We also had a three course and very good dinner in this room, private from other pub go-ers. Given the current restrictions with social distancing this worked very well, though I am keen to return to use the very cosy 16th century coaching in bar - complete with the original stable partitions (now used as booths) and a log fire. The rooms were of a good standard - a couple of them exceptional, including a The Gatehouse room and lounge, separate from the main building - great for us as we could use the lounge post dinner to play some board games and listen to music. This place would also work well for those wanting a more private accommodation that is linked to the pub. All in all a great stay, super service, lovely bath products (Temple Spa) and my favourite Burlington bathroom fittings. Comfortable beds. Only criticism - the coffee! I love a traditional Illy or Lavaza - not sure what this one is but I'd gently suggest they should change or offer alternative beans as well. A great stay, we have already booked to return!

We had a lovely weekend break away at the running horses. Can’t fault the staff, particularly Sylvia and Josie, they were all very welcoming and hospitable. Beautiful area to go for a walk then have a cosy drink/meal by the fire. Our room was big enough for our dog to have her crate set up and it was helpful to have an outdoor space nearby for her. Oh yes and the food-just delicious. Thanks :)
