The Running Horses is a perfect country inn at the heart of picturesque Mickleham village in the Surrey hills. Step inside and you’ll discover one of the most charming places to eat and stay in Surrey. Dating back to the 16th century, it was once a coaching house. Back in those days, the inn’s clientele provided rich pickings for highwaymen. Thankfully, things are a little more peaceful these days, but some traditions live on. You’ll still find wonderful home-cooked British food, made with the freshest ingredients, accompanied by a wine list to compare with the top restaurants. The Running Horses has been family owned and run for the last fifteen years. And because we’re not part of a chain, the inn is full of character and individual touches. You’re guaranteed a warm welcome from the moment you enter the cosy bar with its roaring log fire.

As my parents live on Box Hill we often get together locally for Sunday lunch and decided last week to give the Running Horses a try as we like their food generally but had never been on a Sunday. The food was outstanding and that is a word I rarely use. The beef and lamb were cooked to perfection, our knives just fell through the meat. The vegetables still with a little crunch but cooked through, the sauce as it should be ; thick with a rich a full flavour. The desserts were so good they were devoured in seconds so can't tell you much about them :) I am quite fussy about a pub roast and this was easily one of the best I have eaten. Great service and although not cheap, I didn't begrudge one penny of the bill. Thank you.

We had a two night stay here during a walking break in Surrey. Lovely 16th Century coaching Inn near Box Hill independent school in a quiet hamlet . No car park so we had to park on the road but this wasn't a problem. The room was lovely with extremely comfortable bed, a small shower room with quality complimentary toiletries, great shower and excellent extractor fan! A good selection of beers but we were a little disappointed by the lack of vegetarian main course choice on the menu. The Inn does pride itself on using locally sourced meats and offered an adventurous range of meat dishes but only ravioli or a salad were on offer for veggies so we ate elsewhere locally on our second night. The breakfasts were interesting with a smashed avocado and poached on sourdough with tomato and chives. This was delicious although the unexpected addition of chopped raw onion had to be picked out as it disagrees. The "God bowl" with sweet potato, avocado, cous cous and feta also looked interest but unfortunately there were no sausages available for the full veggy breakfast.

We stayed here on bank holiday Monday in the small cottage which is part of their accomadation. It was very quaint, it had its own lounge, bedroom and bathroom, it was lovely such a picturesque setting. The Pub is very welcoming the under Manager couldnt do enough to help us. It is a typical English Country Pub with lots of nooks and crannies and I guess in the winter a very welcoming fire. There was plenty of seating outside and that day they were bar be queing which smelt delicious but we were going to relatives for a meal. The breakfast was very good, a very varied selection and very tasty, I had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and my husband had the full English, both excellent. I do hope one day we will be back as the location is excellent for walking up Boxhill for the views.
