I visited Pennyhill for a spa break with my partner the last weekend before the second COVID lockdown, and we were both delighted with it. It was an expensive weekend so we had high hopes and weren’t disappointed - the facilities were beautiful and very clean, great COVID precautions and the food was SO DELICIOUS and there was a lot of choice. When booking our spa treatments before arriving, I had mentioned that I was pregnant and the hotel left a pregnancy pillow in our room which was a lovely and thoughtful touch. They also have a great range of 0% wines and drinks. Can’t wait to go back when I can try some of the champagnes!

Pros: 1) Scenic surrounding area. 2) Lovely doorman. Cons: 1) Unhygienic: We checked in late (7 PM), went for dinner straight after (8-10 PM), came to the room to sleep and as we got into bed we noticed spiders all over the wall behind the bed. We then got out of bed and saw spiders inside the bed. I have an allergy to spider bites - was previously hospitalized and needed steroids. It takes quite some time for spiders to build a nest and accumulate at that large number, this indicates questionable hygiene standards. If THIS is what can be seen by the naked eye, I cannot guarantee that their rooms are COVID safe or even bedbug safe. 2) (Mis)Management: When I rung management about this at 10ish PM, the night manager came to the room huffing and puffing and stated 'what do you expect, this is nature'. The manager further up was much nicer and apologetic but he stated that there is no other room available and that if we leave the hotel tonight a refund may not be guaranteed. We left anyway (drove back home at midnight). If I stayed I would have risked being hospitalized again if I got bit by the spiders in the bed, I had no choice. 3) Senior (mis)management: The next day, we chased management from 9AM to 3PM - we finally got ahold of the most senior manager who was quite nice, apologetic and was trying to identify a solution for all the inconvenience caused. She offered us two options: stay for one night in a room equivalent to the one we stayed in at a reduced price OR come back to our massage which we had booked however it would be complementary. We chose the latter as we were unsure when I can get a day off in the future given I work in an NHS hospital. 4) Spa day ruined: we arrived to get our massage as promised, it was nice and husband enjoyed his massage. As we checked out, the woman at reception stated we needed to pay for the massage! The next day we got a phone call from the original manager who offered it, but this time she wasn’t nice anymore. She was extremely rude and had an angry tone of voice stating that we misunderstood the offer and that they only offered us an entrance to the spa. She also stated 'I cannot believe that I have to deal with this after my day off'. Wouldn't the paid massage itself grant us access to the spa? Wouldn't a night in the hotel grant us access to the spa? Yes and yes. Hence, what we got as compensation for the severe inconvenience caused by the unhygienic standards is: free dinner and free lunch which totals to about the same as what we paid for petrol. 5) Hygiene standards at the spa: there was no one enforcing restrictions with regards to social distancing, it was absolutely rammed, we also noticed huge areas of algae growing inside the main swimming pool, which again points towards huge problems with hygiene. Overall, this is most certainly not a 5-star hotel quality, not in terms of hygienic standards nor competence of management staff. Not only was the hotel at a HUGE fault but they were also rude to us for speaking up. I will obviously not be recommending this hotel to anyone. Anyone who would like to see the video of the spider nest, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I have posted screenshots.

My wife and I recently had an overnight stay here and on the whole we did enjoy the experience, however we were disappointed in some of the things we encountered. Firstly we couldn't find two free loungers around any of the pool areas as it was very busy and many were being reserved by towels and robes, so we had to sit on a wicker sofa until 5.30pm when we finally managed to find a couple of free loungers. Whilst the food in the Brasserie Restaurant was very nice, the whole area was so noisy it sounded more like a canteen than a restaurant. We stayed in Bonsai room and were kept awake all night by air conditioning plant outside our window running all the time, and the loud banging noise coming from the shower drain in our room which was constantly back-syphoning. When we informed the receptionist she said we should have phoned down and asked to be moved, not something you really want to do late at night when you are in bed trying to sleep. The breakfasts are very lovely and provide a nice experience, especially after a poor nights sleep.

This is our third time staying at Pennyhill and everytime it gets better and better. Quick speedy check in with excellent COVID measures in place. The staff are all so down to earth and lovely, and cannot do enough to help. In specific our breakfast waitress was outstanding. Fresh food and incredibly tasty. We went for a Smart Double room which was massive, gorgeous bathroom with jacuzzi bath and walk in shower, his and hers sinks. The spa had excellent COVId measures in place also which made us feel safe and able to enjoy a last minute break before lockdown. We can’t wait to return thank you for always being amazing Penny!

The spa is beautiful but I wouldn't stay in the hotel again. When we booked we informed them that we are vegan and they confirmed they could cater for us. We also told them we were celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary. When we arrived, we found a note in our room congratulating us and a small box of chocolates. Which should have been lovely but we could not eat the dairy filled chocolates, and in 2020 they should not have assumed we were a straight couple "to Mr and Mrs", read the note. Upsetting and disappointing unintentional homophobia. The food in the restaurant was fine but very overpriced, and the bed was also very uncomfortable.
