Once a fine Regency residence, the hotel is situated in the beautiful market town of Faringdon, close to Oxford, Shrivenham and Swindon. Surrounded by nine acres of landscaped gardens,Sudbury House can offer a quiet break away from it all, yet still being close to local businesses and towns, including RAF Brize Norton, Cranfield University and the Defence Academy.Close to the main Swindon to Oxford Road, the A420, the hotel is within easy access of the M4 and M40. Refurbished and redecorated completely in 2015, the Sudbury House is a great base for the Oxfordshire and Wiltshire counties.

We booked a two night ‘romantic break’ at Sudbury House. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the service was excellent. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very good, however it is only served until 9am so much more suited to those on a work stop over than a romantic break. The dinner menu is limited and the food was tasty although my husband had what appeared to be oven fries with his steak. We were disappointed that there was no food available during the day at all, not even a sandwich. We walked up the road but the places we saw closed after lunch and weren’t open all day. We managed to just catch a really lovely Indonesian cafe (The Faringdon Coffee House) before it shut mid afternoon. The weather was very wet but the hotel grounds look like they would be beautiful in the summer and it is well located to see the area and for a trip into Oxford. A later breakfast and food available would make a big difference.

A Christmas present booked by our daughter. Beautiful place and well maintained throughout. A couple of blue badge parking spaces outside entrance but otherwise car park to left side up a slope - with the icy weather this was quite slippery and didn’t appear to have been salted. Check in quick and easy, lift to bedroom floors or stairs if more abled. Room and bathroom were spacious and clean, bed linen spotless. We normally have a walk in shower only as unable to get into bath but for some reason not allocated so I was unable to use this - lucky there only for one night! Not too sure if any rooms do actually have this facility. The evening meal, both starters and main were delicious and well presented, apparently this menu changes daily as food shown on website not offered. Limited dessert choice, mainly chocolate based which we don’t like, crumble taken off leaving only ice cream. Due to the extreme weather conditions, restaurant and bar were quite cold, so drinks taken up to our room. Unfortunately the beautiful very heavy curtains covered radiator so stopping heat coming into room. Solved by propping curtain up on windowsill and then soon warmed up again. This is when we discovered small issue, there seemed to be what looked like little black ladybirds scattered around room. Husband caught and killed ones we could see, but in morning they were on wall, floor and windows again! Informed receptionist on checking out but she didn’t seem that interested, saying it was cold weather bringing them inside! Not acceptable answer - will they actually look into this? Staff were friendly and helpful. We could see the impressive grounds around hotel, but too freezing wind to venture around. I imagine it would be beautiful in warmer season. Apart from minor issue, would recommend, especially in warmer seasons.

Nice hotel, friendly staff. Limited menus as quiet. Only major thing that would stop us returning was the £20 per day dog cleaning charge which is ridiculous. We have a hypoallergenic havenese and there is no way the charge per day can be justified. Shame.

Response from Sudbury House, Guest Services / Front Office at Sudbury House
Responded Jan 28, 2024
Dear pthyoday, Thank you for your review, I'm sorry to hear you are disappointed with the additional cleaning fee for dogs. We love welcoming dogs to the hotel and apply this charge so that the dog friendly rooms and spaces within the hotel are suitable for all. Whilst I appreciate your dog may be hypoallergenic this is not the case with all dogs and our hotel staff are not able to check each dog breed to determine a suitable charge so we apply one blanket charge which covers all. We do detail this both at booking stage and include our full dog policy on our website to ensure we are transparent in any fees associated. Best wishes

Do not stay here during December. We stayed the 2nd December and, along with several other couples had a night of no sleep. Drunk guests from a Christmas party there, were up all night, knocking on doors, shouting - we called the night manager at 2am who spoke to them- half an hour later they were back again. I spoke to them twice, the last time at 4am. Several guests complained at checkout and were offered a refund - we were told that as we had used a Secret Escapes voucher, the receptionist wasn't sure what she could do but that the General Manager would be in touch the following day. I waited three days, then rang to ask why I hadn't heard anything. The following day I received an email saying that if I booked another stay, they would offer me a discount, an upgrade and a free bottle of prosecco and chocolates. I sent a lengthy email back explaining exactly what we had been subjected to, no reply again, I waited a week then rang, asking to speak to the General Manager- not available. I have never complained at a hotel before or written a bad review but the lack of communication from this hotel is atrocious. Apparently using a secret escapes voucher for £159 makes you a lesser guest than others not using a voucher.

I went with a group of Friends to Sudbury House Hotel. We go away every year for a weekend and this was one of the best hotels we have stayed in. The rooms were very large and the beds so comfy. We all said how well we had slept. Everything was clean and our rooms cleaned and replenished both mornings. The reception staff were so friendly and helpful, as were all the staff that attended to us. Special mention to Shona, Jane and Lana who were so lovely. The food was amazing and beautifully presented and again by far the best we have had. So compliments to the chef. Booking was very easy too and Zoe returned my emails promptly and helped make it a smooth process. A big thank you to you all.

This beautiful hotel is set in lovely grounds on the outskirts of the village Farringdon, the family room we had was very large with 2 sofa beds in and had a large bathroom, domestic staff where very friendly and polite. We ate in the restaurant on the night of our arrival, very knowledgeable staff around one family member’s dietary requirements, food was of a excellent quality and presented very well. I cannot convey enough that how far the front of house staff go to make your stay as memorable as possible, they all went above and beyond to assist ups during our stay, we will definitely stay here again when visiting family.

Great venue for a wedding. The hotel couldn't have worked harder to make our day so special. The rooms and service were first class and the wedding package was every bit as good as we hoped and discussed.

Great hotel in a nice little town. Staff were friendly, the beds were comfy and the breakfast was really nice. Staff phoned us after we booked to inform us there was a wedding at the hotel, the night we were staying so the main restaurant would be closed in the evening as a result. They kindly offered alternative options which was great. The hotel also has EV charging which was handy for us with an electric car, although it was just a single outlet and was a paid for service which was fine, but could have been a pain if it was already in use. Overall a lovely stay and would recommend to anyone staying in the area - some nice bars and restaurants in close walking distance.
