We stayed here for 3 nights on B&B in the 4 poster bedroom. Lovely room with very new bathroom. Bed okay but too soft for our liking. Nice view out to front of the very attractive gardens. Very peaceful and quiet. One big problem with this room is that immediately outside the door there are two adjacent housekeeping cupboards which from first thing in the morning were left open while in use so that we had to keep closing them to get in and back out of the room- housekeeping staff should be told to keep these doors closed.

Breakfast was very average, lousy coffee but not really unexpected. We ate dinner on the first night and the food was very good.

I would say that the level of compromising for the implementation of safety precautions should warrant a reduction in prices. The house keeping staff will not enter the room during your stay. There was ONE tiny bar of soap in the room on arrival and no other toiletries. You can ask for more at reception but would some individually packaged shampoos etc in the room be too much to ask.

All meals were served in the function suite instead of the dining room and this had dark side of the moon style atmosphere which stopped us having more than one dinner.

I assume that breakfast is normally a buffet as the table service was a bit of a shambles, staff were very friendly (as were all staff in the hotel) but didn't seem to be able to take an order with any accuracy.

If you have a car the location is excellent, just off the a1 but very quiet, couple of miles from Berwick and directly on the coastal path, you can walk along the cliffs to the border in fifteen minutes.

Unfortunately we could only stay 1 night .. a Thursday .. caught between the hotel being fully booked mid week and then on to the weekend. We would loved to have stayed longer .
The Superior room overlooked the garden and was well furnished in a Country House style , clean, spacious with a large bathroom with shower over the bath.

Everything was "Covid clean" even the TV remote was wrapped in a bag.

The lounge was a lovely place to sit with a drink overlooking the gardens .

The staff were extremely hard working .. multi tasking and even though at times were rushed were always friendly.

You are allocated a table which is where you sit for both dinner and breakfast , because of the Government restrictions the function suite is used instead of the restaurant. If these measures continue I hope the hotel makes the room a little less stark .

Dinner was very good value for 2 courses though breakfast lacked the fresh fruit we like for breakfast .. not being a sausage/bacon /fried egg fan.

We stayed overnight we were given room 4. The room was very clean and cosy with delightful views. The shower is fantastic, very quiet, nice touch with molten brown toiletries and bottled water in the room. The whole hotel was spotless, we had dinner in the bar, the food was delicious as was breakfast in the morning. All the staff were lovely and friendly nothing too much trouble for them they are a credit to the hotel. We will 100% be back for another stay but longer next time.😁

Booked a four-poster room and was rather disappointed. The window blind was broken and the walls had numerous stains on them (possibly damp?). When opening a drawer, the handle fell off. The bathroom fittings were good but the doorframe in the en-suite was really badly finished. Looked like the door had been reversed and someone hadn't finished the job.
Outside the room there are two cupboard doors at right angles to the bedroom door. I discovered these are for housekeeping, because on opening the bedroom door to go for breakfast I almost walked into another door right in front of my face. I closed the cupboard door and then stepped around the housekeeping items which had been left on the floor outside the bedroom. Maybe a word to staff to keep the cupboard doors closed and not leave items on the floor would be a good idea.
Breakfast was served in the function room and not the dining room due to social distancing requirements. Unfortunately the tables are allocated in advance, and even though we had booked a more expensive room for a romantic break, we were given the worst positioned table out in the middle of the room. I guess no planning went into the table layout. We thought the breakfast was poor with no fruit, no yoghurts, no pastries and no potato products (eg hash browns). Also, the small milk jug you are given with cereal needs to be double in size.
The location is good - loved the coastal path. The wifi is good and most of the staff were nice. The lounge opposite reception is really nice and shows what can be done.

Interesting it calls itself Manor House, rather than hotel, but all becomes clear when you set foot inside the front door. You are not entering a hotel, you are stepping into an experience that will stay with you as an enduring memory of everything a relaxing, rewarding and revitalising break away from the hustle and bustle of home life should be.
It is a haven of tranquility, tucked away on the coast five or six miles north of Berwick and just one mile short of the Scottish border, but it's so much more besides.
Where to start? Well, the warm welcome on arrival set the tone and was mirrored every time we encountered a member of staff, whether it be on reception (where mention of a visit to Lindisfarne Island led to an unprompted but incredibly detailed description of all the main attractions), either of the two bars (where whoever was on duty insisted on bringing the drinks over to your table) or the restaurant.
Given the venue's blissfully-peaceful location, you would have to drive if you wanted to eat elsewhere, so the restaurant has to be good. It's more than good. It is absolutely exceptional. Breakfast is cooked to order, needless to say, and they are very accommodating to individual requirements, while the evening fare is a cut above anything I've experienced in a hotel. I would particularly recommend the pan fried scallops as a starter and sea bass for main course. Exquisite! The chef is a genius!
We read before booking that it had been refurbished, and every room exudes style, from the lounges and restaurant to the bedrooms. You can pay extra for one of the suites, which really do look the ultimate in spoiling yourself, but we settled for a standard room and found it to be very spacious with a massive king-sized bed, lovely sea view and fantastic power shower in the en suite.
Coming back to the staff, they were all unfailingly polite, courteous and patient and always ready with a smile. It was like they were pleased to see you. That's how it came across.
Just as importantly, while it is a serene, idyllic location overlooking the sea, it is still within easy reach of Northumberland's many magical attractions, like Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle and the grey seal boat trips from Seahouses, all of which we included in a memorable three-day stay. It was truly wonderful.

Marshall Meadows Country House Hotel in Berwick upon Tweed is well located for a short break to Northumberland.  From here, you can explore the pristine, unspoiled coastline both North and South of the hotel with ease. Visit my travel blog for a 3 day itinerary.

We were visiting in September 2020 aduring the Covid-19 restrictions.  The hotel was doing its very best to keep everyone safe, but it meant that unfortunately, the pretty little dining room was out of action and instead, we had to take our meals at an allocated table in the large function room which inevitably lacked the intimacy of the usual dining room.

The bedroom we were allocated was comfortable enough - but really tiny!  If you like a large bed and enjoy your space, you would probably be best to request a larger room and pay a bit of a premium for it.

This is an AA 3 star hotel.  The restaurant was reasonable enough with a daily changing menu, but nothing to write about home about.

We spent 3 nights here recently. It wasn't all bad..... Most staff were friendly and helpful and the food the 2 nights we ate in was good though limited in choice and the menu did not vary by much.
Staffing through the day and in the evenings was limited and the check in process interesting. The bar closed at 6pm then again 10pm again easily solved with staffing reorganisation. Not everyone wants to go to bed at 10! We were asked to 'put the lights out' when we went up!! The rooms were dated and left a bit to be desired. The building itself is beautiful and the location amazing. With a bit of TLC it could be wonderful it felt generally run down and uncared for. Behind the television in the bedroom was coated in dust. In the bar there was a HUGE cobweb. The bathroom in our room was fine it seemed far more modern than our friends. We could have preferred a king sized bed than two small doubles. Everything in the room had been put in plastic bags which I felt was unnecessary. The room itself was 'tired'. The dining room ( complete with 70s/80s music) due to Covid restrictions ( which we did understand) had been moved to the function room. This felt unwelcoming and a bit bizarre as the room had wedding net decorating the ceiling which wasn't in particularly good order. Many of these would have been easy fixes. We chose the hotel based on positive trip advisor reports so these have been very misleading. I see recently the reviews have been less good. Maybe management need to look at things. We do understand things are different with Covid BUT we stayed in another hotel for the next couple of nights and experienced an entirely and much more positive experience where we still felt 'safe' during these uncertain times.

Lovely location convenient for travellers to/from Scotland, just off the A1 a few hundred yards short of the border (you can walk to it in 15 mins on he coastal path, well worth stretching your legs on).
The building looks a lovely old stone manor and the Covid precautions are well done. The staff are lovely and very helpful. The main issue is the aging décor and facilities. The carpets look 40 years old, the rooms well painted but cheap fittings and the beds ancient, small and uncomfortable. They are using the large function room for dining to separate the tables, a good idea but an awfully dark and dismal room if you are placed away from the windows. Food is ok for the standard of the hotel. They desperately need to upgrade the corridors and rooms , a good bed has to be the priority in a hotel and it obviously isn't.

I enjoyed a stay here about a month ago with some friends and the staff were all so friendly, our room was clean and comfortable, and the food in the restaurant was absolutely to die for. The executive suite has a wonderful neutral but modern feel to it and a gorgeous view of the sea. We were met with a really warm welcome from all of the staff, and the room had bottled water and complimentary Molton Brown cosmetics - it made our stay feel even more luxurious than we had bargained for! The hotel is just a short walk from the Scottish border and I would definitely recommend taking advantage of the views from the coastal path, especially if followed by a gin from the impressive menu in the bar. We had dinner in the restaurant which came promptly, well presented and with great service from all of the waiters and waitresses. My fish was perfectly cooked and the menu had an impressive range of vegetarian/vegan dishes as well - I was sorry to only have one night to enjoy a meal there! Breakfast was also fantastic, with a selection of juices and pastries before choosing from a cooked breakfast menu (picture of beautiful runny egg attached!) Thank you so much to all the staff at Marshall Meadows for making our stay so enjoyable, we can’t wait to come back again very soon!

This is a lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings but sadly it is showing it's age. The staff cannot be faulted - they were all very friendly and bubbly and are all to be commended for their work. our room was small but comfortable and the shower has to be the most powerful I've ever experienced. However, the shower cubicle was tiny and there was nowhere to put shampoo/soap except the floor but reaching for it entailed having to open the cubicle door as there was no room. Aside from that little niggle, this place is highly recommended to anyone wanting to stay in the area

Hi there, is breakfast buffet or cooked to order and do the guestrooms have a min fridge? thank you.
Answer from James L
Hi there, Breakfast is available both as a continental buffet, and there is a hot cooked to order section via the menu. All room types, with the exception of the Classic Doubles and Classic Twin/Doubles have a mini bar style cooler. It is not a refrigerator but will keep drinks cool enough to enjoy. Kind Regards
