We were visiting Deal for a weekend break and booked a table through the hotel website for two people at the later slot available at 9pm. After a two hour journey we were hungry and looking forward to enjoying a meal out on the first evening of our weekend away. Arrived at the Royal Hotel restaurant to be told dismissively by the manager that last food orders were at 8.45pm and it became apparent that he wanted to dismiss us as quickly as possible. When we explained that we had made a table booking online for the 9 pm slot and asked why the restaurant website offered this time as an option for dinner when they actually didn’t serve food at this time, we were told the restaurant couldn’t be responsible for what the website said. We were offered no apology whatsoever and made to feel extremely unwelcome and uncomfortable. A very disappointing experience and appalling customer service.

Having eaten at this hotel many times over the past twenty years it has usually been a good or excellent experience. The management seem to have forgotten the absolute basics of food. We thought maybe our visit recently was in some sort of crisis in the kitchen so we went back again and the situation was the same. Maybe there was no one in the kitchen with even basic ability to cook or maybe the management just don't care. A desert menu with three things, one off and one, a chocolate brownie, which is not a desert. That left a slice of lemon tart described in the menu as Eton mess. If there is no one who can knock up a summer pudding , a fruit salad, a bread and butter pudding or any of the hundreds of deserts this country is renowned for they really should close and leave it to someone who can run a kitchen. Anyone can put a bit of meat salad or vegetables on a plate but what one pays for in a restaurant is to have some well prepared dining. What's more they could have nipped out to one of the local shops and grabbed some desert ingredients but no they really could not be bothered. So they miss out on the sale of the desert and the drinks that go with it, a good way to run a business ?

Stayed 1 night in standard double room. Dual aspect 2nd floor. Wonky floors are original and quirky.Bathroom, to be honest, was a bit shabby and needed some mastic on skirtings and the shower mainly poured on to the floor causing the skirtings to split. I appreciate it’s an old building but it wouldn’t cost much to sort out. Looked like it had new carpet and new linen curtains which were nice, too. Also looked like it had been repainted. Coffee machine was good. WiFi should be sorted. I don’t want to open an account giving loads of details, I just want to access WiFi: most hotels give you a password to log on, that’s what I want.In the end I used my 4G. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. For breakfast (we had to book a time) which was fine and was very Covid safe. Breakfast itself was fantastic. Hot and tasty. Staff went above and beyond. Would definitely stay again.

Just visited Deal for the first time as a family of 6 - 2 adults and 4 children and stopped by for a Sunday Lunch. The service was appalling! To start we were told we couldn’t order kids roast dinner or swap new potatoes for extra roast potatoes. This was then corrected and we were told by another waitress they did do kids roasts (although no price was given for the kids portion) we wrongly assumed it was be the same price as a kids meal advertised however it was considerably more. When we asked if we could have a Yorkshire puddings with a roast pork we were told it would be a charge of £1.50 which is ridiculous on a £14 roast dinner! The food overall was nice however the potions were all small at £15 for beef and £14 for pork and £7.95 for a tiny kids portion. The staff were cold, they didn’t understand their own menu and we were never asked if our meal was ok or if we wanted any sauces. Service goes a long way and we could have forgiven the portion sizes had we felt more welcomed and been given a little but more attention. Over all hugely disappointed and expected more for a nearly £90 Sunday dinner!!
