Conveniently located on the esplanade this Victorian hotel has unique sea views and benefits from being on a level seafront position. The beach is close by and the shops and holiday attractions of the well-known resort of Ryde are only a short walk away. The hotel is also well-situated for buses, taxis, trains and the hovercraft, so offers the ideal base to travel all around the island as well as over to Portsmouth with its rich maritime history. The seafront position lends itself to some wonderful views from the restaurant and lounges - the perfect place to sit back and relax. A car is ideal for getting around the undulating roads of the Isle of Wight and there is a plethora of things to see and do for all ages. Whether touring historic houses or visiting natural adventure parks, watching the yachting action and festivities of Cowes week, or just relaxing on one of the islands many beaches, you are sure to enjoy the island’s unique charm.

The Royal Esplanade is a picture of slightly worn down splendour. The building is mid-Victorian about 1867, with a grand sort of architectural "wedding cake" look. It has a fantastic view of the harbour right across to Portsmouth that is attractive both night and day. If you arrive by Hovercraft as we did, you literally just cross the footbridge from the bridge, then over the road, and you are there. It is a fantastic location to explore Ryde and the Eastern IoW from. Everything you could want to see in Ryde is walking distance (although uphill if you wander into the town). Opposite are the train station going to all points south and linking with the IoW Steam Railway, and the Hover and Ferry terminals for the mainland, as well as the main bus stops for local and tourist buses. The Hotel itself could do with a complete paint job as it is looking rather tired, similarly the fixtures and fittings inside. So it's by no means slick and modern. It was reasonably clean in the rooms, although the bathroom floor had been missed by the cleaners while we were there. Staff were always friendly, but they did seem a bit disorganised at busy breakfast times, I would say this was down to a lack of procedural guidance from management to inexperienced staff; sort out proper management by table number with specific staff rather than everyone trying to do everything round all the tables. Food was ample, a few things let it down, like a poached egg that had obviously been pre-prepared, dunked into cold water to save it, but not then given a quick simmer to finish the cooking process, leaving the egg itself cold, and the white under cooked around the yolk. Dinner was good if you like quantity. If you sleep with the window open you will get some street noise from about 7 in the morning from the trains, and then later from the hovercraft, but it didn't bother me as I'm usually up by then anyway. To be honest there's nothing wrong with this Hotel that an investment in refurbishing and a bit of management training couldn't put right. It's got all the ingredients to be something special, but needs some investment. If I wanted a short, cheap stay in Ryde I would stay here again, but would mainly eat out.

Great location - right next to hovercraft port, festival bus stop and taxi rank. It’s great value. I wasn’t expecting such a great breakfast to be included - full on fry up if you wish. Only issue for me was that I was placed next to the lift which is quite a noisy old creaky thing in the night so woke up a few times!

Recently stayed here for 3 nights and I must say it was a pleasure! Many thanks to Willow who looked after us and always greeted us with a lovely smile, she was brilliant. The breakfast was good, the scramble egg did taste like rubber but other than that it was fine. The staff were friendly and helpful in the mornings as well. Our Room was clean and we had a lovely view of the sea, we also watched the hovercraft go in and out several times. Overall, we had a lovely stay and we would quite happily stay again.

If you are looking for minimalist aesthetic soulless hotel rooms then this hotel is not for you. It’s old, and historical , also quirky. The staff are friendly, helpful no matter what time of day or night. The food is excellent, and the poached eggs are amazing. We stayed for 4 glorious days, enjoying Ryde and also the hovercraft to Portsmouth. Would recommend this hotel and certainly stay again.
