I think some of the comments are a little unfair on here. You get exactly what you pay for, a 4* hotel, 4* amenities, 4* service (all of which were great), if you expect more then pay extra and stay at a 5*hotel. The staff were polite, accommodating and welcoming, we stayed in one of the Shepard’s huts which were beautiful and I highly recommend it. The hotel was quiet, very relaxing, and in beautiful surroundings, my treatments were also great. The only area I think they could improve on is the food as it did feel like a lot of it was out of a tin rather than fresh. I don’t think people can complain and mark the hotel down because certain areas such as the sauna were not open due to Covid, that’s not their fault and you should check what is available before booking. We had a very enjoyable and lovely few days, I would definitely take another trip to Forest Mere!

Covid restrictions mean fewer guests, fewer staff and constraints on the usual nice little touches. No iced water dispensers, less varied menus, no sauna, swim lanes in the pool BUT within those externally imposed limitations they are their usual marvellous hosts. I've been here for six days and have had great treatments, great service and am leaving nicely relaxed after a super stressful previous six months. Only downside has been some snide remarks from super entitled guests who seem to think that they should be exempted from real life on account of being too important to be put out by a mere virus!

My husband and I stayed for our wedding anniversary. After waiting in a long queue at check- in, we were given a twin room, despite having booked a double. This had an incorrect robe and shoe size for my husband and again we had a long wait to get the correctly sized robe and shoe size. A lot of the spa facilities were unavailable ( steam room, sauna) and we were not told this in advance. Apart from the swimming pool, we felt that not much was available (with only one household in the jacuzzi allowed). One couple were in the jacuzzi for over 40 minutes, so no one else could use. In the relaxation area, we noticed blood stains on three of the waterbeds, so we did not feel comfortable relaxing there. Incredibly when we got back to our bedroom, we found an earring and a green pair of ladies pants behind the seat next to the curtain, (which made it straight into the bin. ) We thought to complain but then another queue at reception put us off the idea, so we abandoned the plan. House keeping standards clearly in question. We arrived on time for dinner, but had to wait fifteen minutes to get a table, then a further 30 minutes for wine to arrive. People arriving after us were finished starters and we still were holding menus. The waiters were working hard and seemed pleasant but the area looked very understaffed. Breakfast was very limited and any warm food was an extra cost. To cap it all, we wanted to pay using a credit voucher ( as hotel did not refund lockdown cancellations and we have a deadline until May to use). The staff member suggested I use the express check out despite my having repeatedly explained. She did not demonstrate customer service training, in her approach or service. Three days later, we got charged a second time on our credit card! This is a repeat stay for us, and the experience was very poor and standards have significantly deteriorated.

My husband and I have just spent three days at Champneys Forest Mere and sadly came away underwhelmed by our stay. The hotel is very tired and dated internally and externally, which is such a shame as the grounds are stunning and it could be amazing. The food was poor, I had to send my steak back twice as it was not cooked how I’d requested. The lunch and dinner menu was the same for three days and therefore pretty limited for choice. We ended up going to nearby local pubs for dinner and lunch on two occasions (highly recommend The Rising Sun!) On our last night we tried ringing for room service but there was no answer, so I had to go to the restaurant to place our order and was moved out the way so that other guests could be seated in priority of a room service order. The staff on the whole were polite, but they were understaffed and so the service wasn’t what you’d expect. I understand times are very difficult in the hospitality industry but there are some very basic areas that could be improved to offer the relaxing experience that is advertised.

I had a two-night stay at Forest Mere with my daughter. We were a bit concerned about how Covid19 precautions would change things. We have been several times before, and always enjoyed ourselves very much. How would Champneys be coping with Covid? Well, our stay was absolutely fine. We had a lovely room upstairs with a balcony overlooking fhe lake and outdoor pool. The weather was fabulous. My daughter did two classes, one of which was held outdoors. We each had a treatment, and the staff were very reassuring about hygiene. The main difference is with regard to the dining room. No buffet at breakfast or lunch - so all the meals are waiter service. I do miss the buffets - it's nice to have control over what you eat, and there seemed to be far more salad options from the buffet. But nevertheless the food was really good, and I especially enjoyed the roasted guinea fowl, and then the mango sorbet! Let's hope that on our next visit the buffets are reinstated - and that's not the only reason to hope for the end of Covid19. The staff have clearly been well trained in running the Spa in these challenging times. I would particularly commend Meg, who gave me a terrific facial, and Wendy, who took us on a country trek. I'm looking forward to my next visit.
